She seems to be coming around these days to other realizations and that's the part of her that I identify with on a different note. I'm wondering whether this is a more recent development. My family is from Taiwan but we've emigrated to Australia more than 30 years ago. We are (or were) incredibly ignorant of Jewish culture. Safe to say, I think we were not aware of its existence (no, serious). When I started going out with my husband (who is Jewish, at least culturally), they never asked. Even when I did tell them he's Jewish (because I had to explain to my mum differences from generic Anglo- Australian culture), didn't really elicit any reaction. It was only in the last 4 years or so, my mum made some new friends where she started learning some of the stereotypes. One day, out of the blue she said to me, "So someone told me Jewish people are usually good with money and are rich?" So yeah......this must have been a fairly recent development.

You can however, try to find a Rabbi (and this itself might be difficult depending on the reason for why you want to convert, some Rabbi's will refuse you if your motivation is marriage to a partner only) and go through the teachings to convert, but there are still factors that might mean you still won't be recognized as Jewish by Israel. All in All, truly converting is extremely difficult, not like converting to a religion alone. You're converting into a different lifestyle as well.

So that it is genuine there is a tradition to dissuade or send away a person interested to convert to Judaism, three times, to test how genuine they are but once one converts to Judaism, according to the Torah, Halachically they are Jewish and it's permanent, like they were born into it, so they better be sure before they go through the process, that it's what they desire. Some of the most prominent Rabbis were Jews by choice, or children of converts.

@@KS-zu6ps I was just in PP last month and after I talked to some people they asked where I was from "Faith" and I told them I was orthodox and after that I was at a full on family party with well over 60 other jews, not orthodox but many.
