Why not? The space station is modular anyway and having only 2 experimental modules is not gonna be enough once you really start using them. China already proved it can build space stations. The only question now is how big they want it to be to suit their needs, and it seem that if they want to open it up to commercial and international users it gonna have to be bigger.

CSS is 900 square meters inside and ISS is 912 square meters inside, why would you say it’s “significantly smaller”? It’s lighter because it doesn’t have heavy solar panels and mounting racks nor large amount of fuel, CSS uses ION thruster which uses little fuel to power.

Loved your upload. I noticed that the current CCS does not have an observation window like the ISS, nor is it planned to have one. Instead, each astronaut's sleeping cell has a small, flat window that allows people to look out. I believe a large viewing window, or even multiple windows, would add great value to the CSS.

@@DongfangHourhow thick are those windows? Always excited to see new content here! These latest details do not disappoint. The extra docking ports on CSS (2:30), and 7-seat NGCSS spacecraft (3:56) seem to give CSS a 'gateway' like functionally. Would be fantastic if China is considering using CSS as a travel gateway to sending missions to lunar orbit. (speculation, as nothing official) Returning to LEO from lunar orbit doesn't really make sense, as is more efficient to use Earths atmosphere and aerodynamic drag to slow down vs. carrying extra fuel on a round trip for delta-velocity burn to slow down to LEO. Staging missions in LEO however could be pragmatic. Is there a timeline for how long CSS is expect to remain operational? I'd expect well into the 2030's based on ISS being occupied for 23 years now (initial components launched in 1998). The Mir SpaceStation was operational for a decade prior, hosting both Russian and US missions (1986-1996). CSS compared to Mir is a substantial improvement in capability.

When you say that there are 6 sleeping qtr on tiangong right now but 3 are backups, what does this actually mean? Why would sleeping QTRs need backups on the actual space station right now that's not doing anything? I mean sleeping QTR is not something critical to need a backup of it, and if need be, taikonauts can sleep anywhere like they do sometimes on ISS, or so I've heard from some interview with astronauts. They say they get sleep anywhere anytime they can, since sometimes it's too crowded and they have like 13 astronauts on board during hand overs or crew rotations etc. they also have wires and equipment all over the place, maybe they even used the sleeping QTRs for some other purpose, like storing equipment, food supplies, or even utilities like toilet paper haha. Also, I'm assuming that crews never all sleep at the same time, and most likely someone is awake at all times monitoring the system as well as doing something. This way they don't need a 1 to 1 ratio of crew to sleeping qtrs. So a crew of 6 can easily make do with 3 sleeping qtrs, or even a crew of 9, if you assume that they just have 8 hours sleep allocated a day. So 3 can support 9, and 6 can support 18. For everything else, they can just hang up a sleeping bag and take a nap anywhere they want, since it's zero g anyway. The only downside would be lack of privacy, but if they just want to sleep, that shouldn't be a problem, unless they wanna relax/chill and watching movieand/or just enjoying their own personal space and time. I guess this is also important, since sharing a small enclosed open space with zero privacy with 3 people or more for 6 months would be stressful and in the end everyone would need some personal time and space to recharge not jut physically but also mentally. I ranted too much lol. If anyone can tell me why sleeping qtrs needs backups, please let me know. Thanks!
@DongfangHour
@DongfangHour Год назад
Basically there are 3 sleeping areas in the Tianhe core module, this is where the 3 astronauts sleep. The Wentian module, beyond space sciences applications, was designed to be a full back-up of the Tianhe core module in case anything happens. So it has all the necessary env control and life support systems, comms, toilet, kitchen ameneties, and... 3 additional sleeping areas. These 3 sleeping quarters in Wentian are only used when a new team of 3 astronauts docks to the CSS and there are temporarily 6 astronauts. It's also worth noting that all astronauts in the CSS have an activity/sleep schedule based on Beijing time, so there can't be any rotation in the sleeping quarters (everyone sleeps at the same time). Hope this helps 😉

@@DongfangHourthanks bro, that did explain basically everything but as always, the answer itself leads to more questions heh. ;p Also, just wanna say you do a great job and a unique one on YT basically, since no one else covers the Chinese space scene on YT as well if in depth as you do. It's like you're the Andrew Jones of RU-vid lol. 😁👍 More questions. Will that backup sleeping QTR be a permanent thing, even after another tianhe core module has been sent up and connected? Can they be swapped or changed into more room for space science applications or experiments etc? Maybe another recreation, exercise, or storage area if anything. And that Beijing time thing, so that means all 3 go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday? I would have assumed that they'd all sleep at like different times, with like 1 person awake at all times doing something at least, unless they specifically need 2 or more people to do a mission or experiment or something.. Thanks again bro. Love your work, keep at it. Gambate! Hehe
