Few industries are as complex as space, and few countries are as complex as China. Sitting at the intersection of these two megatrends, Dongfang Hour is a channel that aims at bringing a balanced, holistic content, with a touch of entertainment and humour.
Who is behind the Dongfang Hour? Dongfang Hour is a part-time project by Blaine Curcio and Jean Deville, a consultant/entrepreneur and an aerospace engineer. We're both space enthusiasts and familiar with Chinese culture and the Chinese business ecosystem (with a combined 20 years spent in the country!). Jean mostly handles the RU-vid channel, aimed at an audience of space enthusiasts, while Blaine caters for industry executives with the newsletter.
I've noticed a growing trend of speech impediments wherein (younger people, usually) don't finish the last consonant of (seemingly random) words? Is this learned behavior, or something else? Genuinely curious...as it exists with some relatives of mine, too.
They’ll do it, cause they’ve made a plan and they’re working methodically towards it, not screwing around with the white elephant that is starship, which won’t be developed i to a credible lander for 10+ years, if ever
Chinese can catch up faster because their operational cost is far lower than American and European counterparts. their staffs pay are lower and they getting big funding from Chinese government.
Will G60 do something like what EV does to car? Fast speed and cost efficient? Like cheaper and better than Starlink? Like 40% cheaper than Starlink and faster than 6G?
Am I the only one who kind of wants China to land before artemis 3. Don't get me wrong, I do not agree with the country at all, but them "beating" the US to the moon will give a reason for us to invest in space.
No doubt that China has many competent engineers and bright scientists. However, the US is a few steps ahead of China in space technology. The US lost focus on Moon landing program and now is redoubling its effort to lead while China has always been ambitiously planning one since a long time ago. Note that China approach is a simpler and smaller version compared to that of NASA. The emphasis of China actions is to strive to prove to the world the achievement of the CCP political system.

Looks like CCP as usual.. China has been ripping off intellectual technologies for many decades and it looks like they are copying SpaceX just like they copied Tesla.. Cheering on those who steal to get ahead is not going to come from me.. At this very moment the USA and other countries are paying China and India to be the top two polluters on the planet.. How this happened was global corruption which makes me sick and the reason why China is not in the international space collective..
No one will ever be able to land on the Moon. The Moon is a luminary and is a plasma. The ongoing pride of people causes them to tell lies , in their seek for power and money.
As an American, I love your unbiased content. China's space program today reminds me of the US program during Apollo, and they did it themselves without any help or stolen Nazi German tech. Waited 50 years for this, the future is finally here.
if I was CNSA, I would just watching old Apollo mission footage and take notes. Half the research has already been done, its all a tech and protocol development now.
That's what I don't get about Chinese people. They are to good to use our star link and they can't play with the rest of the world it's really childish. China you have 100s of star links over your head your just to stubborn to use them. Quit wasting rocket fuel and punching holes in the ozone cause your to proud its really pathetic
May 2025 update.. the Artemis plan is a pipe dream just like the Dallas and Calafornia high speed rail projects. Artemis won't return to the moon till the late 2030s.. in a severely downsized design.
