In this video we are installing the chine top rail and the chine flat ahead of the bottom planking which we will begin in the next video.
I will also talk a little bit about the Temptress build project as a whole and I am looking for YOUR input on how we might be able to make that happen. I would love to get a full size boat build underway so we'll talk about the reality of how that might be able to happen.
Ways that you can support the channel, project and help to get a build in progress.

In this series I am building a 6' model version of our new boat design Temptress. The reason for building the boat in that size is so that I can show the process, exactly the same as it will be for the full size boat with everything scaled down. It will offer a full tutorial on how to build the boat, be a test run for myself and also give me a demo model that I can take to boat shows.
Plans are available to buy for both the full size boat and a simplified, slot together, plywood scale model plan set. Note that in this video series I am working from the full size boat plans. For details on the scale model plan set, take a look at this video: • RC Model Boat Plan Tou...

You're not playing with models, you're building a proof of concept. Automakers do this all the time.

Dan. Your work is simply staggering. I only wish there were more like you, building and designing things like cars, motorcycles and so on over the UK and Europe. It is so heartbreaking seeing all the talent we have being wasted. People just don't have the imagination, drive and ambition anymore but I am sure that your videos contribute towards changing that.

most excellent , Captain Dan , finish out the model and build the full-size !!!

Full size would be a double gift, income from YT, assuming you do record it, and then the sale of the boat after a solid Marketing effort at the various boat shows around the country side.

Agree...you don't have to have a perfect idea right now on funding or a real customer to invest in the full-size build. This is now a sharing-is-caring, crowd-sourced, thin-sliced, long-tail world...just keep moving forward and your global followers will help make it happen.

Yes, maybe the way is to just make a start... build it and they will come! Thats the way I built Miss Isle, I just did a bit as and when I could afford it 🤔

What a beautiful sound, 'blevelling' the top rails. Can't beat the sound of a sharp plane cutting lovely straight grained wood. Looking very good.

Full size would be great! But I feel the 1/4 scale series is great as a “how to instructions” This episode is a good example of why its worth doing it at 1/4 scale as it highlights things that could be differently. It offers a better product to people buying your plans. Ideally youd want an order as you say, could you do an “introductory offer” at material cost to someone? Then make money from videos, advertising & merchandise? Hard call! Your work deserves more recognition though!!!
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 7 месяцев назад
Thanks, yes I agree, the 1/4 scale has highlighted a few things that could be refined. It has also made the process soo much clearer in my own head for how things would flow on a proper build. Definitely worth while and I hope a helpful resource to anyone wanting to build one of these boats. I like the material cost idea, the revenue from videos and merch is a mile off right now to be able to cover my overheads but it may get there some day. As a brief example, this last video took me about 10 hours to shoot and edit, as of now it has earned £11 so to get it solely funding a full build views would need to be way higher! I think there may be other options though such as sponsorship that I could look into. One thing I have thought of is offering to deduct any RU-vid earnings (or a share of) off the price of the finished boat to the customer. Essentially the price of the project will continually decrease as it is built, a pretty unique offer I think. Even if we never get mega views, one video a week over a two year project will begin to chip away at the final price. All ideas.

@@DanLeeBoatbuilding I hadn’t realised how many views you would need to actually create revenue to support your costs. Other thing that springs to mind would be actual courses, you do your online course but could you use this boat as a change for small numbers to come and physically work on the boat and gain experience while you make progress (albeit slower) while still making money. Lots of other boat schools seem to fill courses, a difference would be that they are usually taking a boat home. But your overheads wouldnt need to be as high with the boat and materials staying in your hands. Really want to see you succeed! Living vicariously through you as your living my dream
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 7 месяцев назад
Yes, in reality most RU-vidrs are "working" for less than minimum wage for most things they do. However I think using the platform to pull in other revenue streams is the key to how most of them actually make a living out of it. I like the idea of the courses though, I will have a think about how that could work. Perhaps combine some hands on work on Temptress along with an epoxy course or finishing when it gets to it... that's got my brain going now :)

Watching your videos gives me more reason to buy your plans. I doubt I would attempt to build a boat like this without your great video instruction. I am very much enjoying the videos, and your work is just beautiful. Either way you go full size or scale, I will definitely be getting a set of plans.

Hi Dan. Tough question with the Temptress funding. The idea with the engraved names is OK. Like the t-shirt idea, looking for them on your web sight? Maybe a Temptress club or a option to buy a "ride" in the finished boat (short tour on Lake Como Italy for example) or some hands on training possibilities? I am a Canadian living in Germany and building your Atomite at the moment along with a 21 foot Riviera; enjoy all your videos, thanks for the help. I especially enjoyed the new Epoxy video; I am a fan of using Epoxy underneath the Varnish. Cheers Tom

@DanLeeBoatbuilding 6 месяцев назад
Great ideas Tom, thank you! I think definitely offering a ride in the boat or some sort of Patrons day closer to the time of launch may work well and help with the final financial push needed for the build. The t-shirts you can find here: danleeboatbuilding.myspreadshop.co.uk/ Glad you liked the epoxy video 👍

Sub'd! Hey Dan, great content, I really like the model boat and think you should not only finish it but go ahead and build the full scale version. When the right buyer comes along then include the model with the purchase. You can call it a hull study and you don't have to finish the model to a functional level, just a beautiful glossy finish. I build boats at Stancraft and I really like the smaller more interesting boats over the big 35-40 footers we do regularly, they just have more class and character. Keep moving forward!

fantastic work dan or like I often say to my knifemaking friends. work of art or art of work ? !! ;) I have a suggestion........ why not make a course where people share this passion for boatbuilding can come and help you with a full scale project so people can learn and similtaneuosly help funding the boat. only my humble suggestion. peace from the other side of the british channel .

It’s probably an “all-of-the-above” situation. You referenced Leo’s project, which has entertainment and storytelling values beyond boatbuilding, while this project would be something far more accessible to boatbuilders or potential boat owners who appreciate the craftsmanship. A combo of Patreon, merch, and views/shares (you hooked me years ago with your previous builds!) should do the trick. And, like Lou did with the first skiff, you could probably cover cost of goods with a reserve auction. Heading to Patreon, myself, now…
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 7 месяцев назад
Thanks Mark. I agree on Leo's stuff, entertainment beyond just factual boat building how to's I guess makes it appeal to a much wider audience as well. Like you say though, little bits from YT, Patreon and Merch all help to top up the pot. Boat plan sales of course can also be added in to the mix there.

Dan, I love to watch your 1/4 scale Temptress taking shape and hopefully your full size version will soon come to fruition. Creativity of this sort is a wonderful talent to have and such projects as this hopefully will inspire others. My more modest attempts at boat building have been so rewarding I only wish I had had the opportunity to learn the craft sooner. The present one is outboard powered but I would have liked more power and if building another I would go for an upgrade in the horse power department. Also I love the look of the latest wave piercing designs which perform so well on the sea near here in Devon. Have you thought about an outboard powered version of Temptress ?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding
@DanLeeBoatbuilding 7 месяцев назад
Thanks Graham. An outboard powered version of Temptress would really require a ground up re-design as the weight distribution would be completely different. It would be a nice boat though, perhaps something a little smaller, 18-19ft in the same styling but outboard power would be really nice.

Hi Dan, Great videos and I'm not a wood guy by any means and I wouldn't know if it's a common well tested technique in wooden boat building but are you sure the floating skins to prevent print through is the right route? I get it that the stations are still attached at the stiffest edges of the skin but can you not just fair the hell out of the stations, it just seems a wasted opportunity to take advantage of the integral bonding and stiffness.
