I practise a different style of karate, but man this is inspiring!! What I take from this is complete attention to detail, proper posture and proper kime. It is said you can't learn kata from kihon or kumite alone, but you can learn both from kata. Thank you for posting this. Osu!
Trained with Demura over 20 years and Osawa until his death. Chinen Sensei is a living legend. Hard to believe anyone could question his skills. Seeing in person his application is a treat. As well as his grappling bunkai many others never intergate out of the original Katas.
@franklin3321 You can tell that it is Sensei's favorite kata. Check out the Northwest Profiles clip that I have in my collection and at the end, he does it in slow-mo so you can see the exact moves.
It is with great sadness that I must convey to you that Chinen Teruo Sensei passed away earlier today from complications of diabetes and kidney failure. JP
MaharlikaAWA He is doing them for my personal video. You will hear more grunts than kiai (yells) in old style Okinawan karate. 1 or 2 is usual, sometimes 3 if you get into the performance of the kata. Kiai are originally taught at various parts of the kata and as you advance then you place them where you feel the need due to the battle. www.karatebyjesse.com/kiai-scream-meaning-purpose-why/
