I think some of them are decent. All the participants really tried their best. I don't think translation is an easy task. You need to understand both languages (nuances, grammar, vocabulary etc) to a certain degree to be able to translate. You also need to absorb information quickly and think flexibly.

I find that Singapore has failed to raise her children as bilingual speakers. The children are well trained to speak in English to prepare to work with the society influenced by the US’s economy. Now that China is stepping up, Singapore’s children are still trained for speaking in Mandarin through the never ending 习字. I find that languages should not be about sitting and completing worksheets but rather, be used to evoke interest and used as a tool to communicate.
@brendalai4393

But it’s sad that a lot of them don’t even speak proper English that well . They speak Singlish
@diltongoh6875
@diltongoh6875 5 лет назад
glitter pops Yep, that’s also because Singapore’s children are raised to speak fluent English the wrong way. Instead of using proper English to communicate during English lessons, never ending worksheets are tasked for students to complete.
@llnyanjun9530
@llnyanjun9530 5 лет назад
I feel like its the 草莓族 (early 2000 babies) that has issues speaking their mother tongue. I realised people around my age (22) speaks well in both languages. Sighs,,, what’s going on with our education man! I totally agree with you that languages should not be a sit&learn method. Its through constant usage such as daily conversation to further improve one’s language capability. Its the practical hands-on session that helps the most ultimately... Also, totally supporting the interest aspect!!! The lack of interest is the biggest issue with kids these days. They don’t know how to appreciate their roots & are always complaining how tough mandarin is without ever trying. Such disgrace and disappointment.
@brendalai4393
@brendalai4393 5 лет назад
llnyanjun95 yeah , a lot of them think that being able to converse in Mandarin or any Chinese dialect indicates that one is not “modern” and being able to speak English (well to be very honest most of them speak Singaporean style English) is “cool” . This mindset is the reason why it’s so hard for them to be bilingual. Like for a lot of Chinese Americans , they suck in Chinese as well especially for those who’s grandparents immigrated to the states 🤣 but they can speak quite well in terms of their accent compared to Singaporean Chinese (for those who went to extra Chinese classes) and they’re fluent in English . I think for a lot of young Singaporeans nowadays, they don’t really speak any languages fluently but consider their Singlish to be fluent .
@llnyanjun9530
@llnyanjun9530 5 лет назад
glitter pops yas!! I don’t understand why kids these days think that dialects are “uncool” or weird. I personally love speaking in teochew and hokkien because there is this taste of authenticity. Furthermore, its not a language that can be mastered easily or be taught through books. Having the ability to speak in english probably makes them feel the superiority, mainly because its the most conversed language in the world. However, Singaporeans can barely speak properly... I agree with you that they assume that their command for english is great when its clear that their grammar is horrible and have a low vocabulary bank. I do not understand why they are so proud of having the ability to speak in Singlish; even the country itself is promoting it. 🙄🙄🙄 Either-how, if this persists, eventually China is going to overtake Singaporeans because their education system - in this case for languages are much stronger. I was shooketh when I saw my own china friends having such great command in both English and definitely Mandarin. Singaporeans need to up their game if not, being overtaken is gonna happen in the near future.

Translating and interpreting are skills that a bilingual person may not have. After taking tests to prove fluency in a second language, people generally spend 2 years studying and sit tests to become a translator (written) or an interpreter (spoken). I can understand some Korean and Mandarin, but not sure if I could translate or interpret very well. My parents visited me in Korea and I struggled to interpret back into English, but found it much easier to interpret my parents English into Korean.

For example, a friend of mine was pretty well-versed in English by playing games that consist of a huge English community on Skype. His pronunciation of words is pretty much on point, he only has to work on his grammar and sentence structure.

I suspect most might just be nervous because they are in front of a camera so they tend to react a bit slower when it comes to language-switch in the head. It’s also harder to switch between languages back and forth so I don’t think it’s really a fair representation of how well they could actually speak.

Guys, remember! Knowing 2 languages and knowing how to interpret 2 languages, are different things! I know 2 languages but I don't know how to interpret either of them.

But mostly in broken singlish, not proper english. Yeah better in english than chinese but their english is more difficult to be understood. English is our lingua franca.

I am from China mainland,as you can see,my English sucks,and as you can imagine,I speak authentic Mandarin, but objectively,if it was me,I would be able to deal with translating material of this level maybe with only a little bit problem, but of course,I never think I Am bilingual enough, I am still on the road, but from this short video, we could feel how difficult it is to be perfect about both two languages..... that's why interpreters are mostly well paid, they indeed deserve it......

I can tell u that I have been studying in Malaysia for over years but I still don't give up on it because the Mother Tongue education level is pretty much more harder than what do you expect.
