Chinese Girl Is Jealous Of Japanese And Koreans...What Now? 

I loved that part with "It's so cool!" It's from China "I like it 40% less..." I can see the Chinese community getting frustrated that Japanese and Korean soft power is much higher. As a Korean American growing up during 90's before we became cool, I felt the same way about Japanese soft power being so much more prevalent.

I have Korean parents, we were all born Korea. Growing up in America I identified as Korean American. I took the dna test as an adult. Turns out I’m only 52% Korean, 26% Japanese and 12% Chinese. I thought it was so cool. I like to share that story when I meet Chinese people or talk to other people about background. I feel a sense of unity. I may not be culturally Chinese, Japanese and even Korean in some ways but it feels good to know that I am still connected.

I'd tell her that while appreciating other cultures is great, don't let the media create a sense of embarrassment or lack of pride for being Chinese.

My mum is Burmese but recently she found out that her grandmother was Chinese, so I'm an 1\8, I thought that was cool. Korea and Japan have many cool things but they don't have Bruce Lee - the coolest Asian !

As a Asian who just came to US 5yrs ago, I extremly recommend Asian Americans that you should stop dividing yourself by ethnicity. Entertainment is just entertainment. I don't understand why you guys always compare each other for useless things and wasting your energy.

Funny thing is, when I first came to the US as a Korean, Americans only asked if I was Japanese...? Chinese..? And majority barely knew what Korea even was, by the Korean war... LOL. But now I sometimes get these kids asking me all excited... ARE YOU KOREAN..? And I say Yes... and they giggle excitedly and want to talk about Kpop.

As a 58-year-old Chinese-American, I grew up in a city with a majority of Japanese-Americans and was always made to feel less than because I’m Chinese. So sad that this still happens 58 years later.

I always felt that wherever Chinese settled they added value to the area such as San Francisco and Southern California and Vancouver, by building businesses or just wanting their kids to get into good schools. There were even Chinese that moved into black neighborhoods to build grocery stores. Chinese work hard keep their head down and want to progress. But if you look at the history everyone has been trying to push down Chinese people for ages it’s just history repeating itself look at the history thr 8 nation alliance. Chinese people got invaded and were forced to pay white countries money after the invasion.

A lot of people already commented about kung fu movies, and I think that's a huge Chinese export that maybe isn't as big as it once was. For my dads generation, Bruce Lee was the biggest star in the world, and I grew up watching things like Enter the Dragon or Jackie Chans Drunken Master. Kung Fu Hustle was MY favorite movie growing up, and it still holds up! For food, Cantonese food and Sichuan food are as good as any Korean or Japanese foods. On the flip side, growing up Japanese, I really shied away from things like Manga and anime because they felt too nerdy or fobby. So the grass is always greener...

Chinese culture is very vast and very old. That is something to be proud of in any culture. As an african i'm saying that. We have empires as well. I’m a 50 yo Korean American and it wasn’t long ago that nobody thought Kculture was cool. Those of us who are more aware and educated appreciate so many aspects of Chinese culture. I hope the younger generation of Asian Americans can grow up with confidence and pride. Our family is multicultural, a mix of different Asians backgrounds and I’m big on solidarity among Asians Americans!

Chinese culture has kung fu, the old traditional stuff looks beautiful, the food is fire 🔥, and the movie stars are popular, we would not have had the Bruce Lee movies, Rush Hour, Romeo Must Die, and others had it not been from Chinese culture.

Even though I watch anime a lot and greatly admired Japanese culture. But I’m always well aware of the fact that some Japanese culture were also in ways greatly and heavily influenced by the Chinese culture, and so are some of the Korean culture. And in turn I also learn to greatly love and respect my own Chinese cultural heritage.

That is quite sad that someone would feel that way. I’ve had some issues with confidence in my past, but even during my darkest days, I never blamed being Chinese for my own ineptitude. The real problem is that the stuff that's inside China isn't readily available to people in the west. The Chinese government made it a thing to separate their internet from the rest of the world. There's probably a shit tons of things that might be poppin' on douyin that would translate well over to the west but because they have separate internets it's really hard to have that exposure to Chinese trends and whatnot.

The best table tennis and badminton players are usually from China. Fastest Asian Su Bingtian 110m high hurdles gold medal winner Liu Xiang. All the wealthy Asian Americans are mainly Chinese and Indian. Products from China are inexpensive not cheap. The quality gets better and better. Many audio equipment is coming from China. Chinese music is very good. More love ballads. 12 Girl Band. Are they still around. Chinese Americans tend to be smarter than Japanese and Koreans Americans too. Better academics. Chinese Americans tend to be the most humble and nice too. Some Chinese nationals can be rude though. 😂

The thing is, the formation and the spread of Korea and Japan’s pop culture is vastly different from each other. When postwar Japan started to become somewhat popular in the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese pop culture in general was extremely inward looking. The only thing Japan was interested in exporting was their automobiles and electronics and its own pop culture such as anime and music was only catered towards Japanese audiences. It was in the mid 1980s during the bubble economy when westerners started to become more interested in the hobbys of the average Japanese people and started adopting them by taking them home to their countries. Japan didn’t initially try to export them, foreigners came to Japan with interest and took them back to spread Japanese pop culture. This is why alot of Japanese pop culture in general has its own aesthetic/flavor because its main target are the native Japanese people and not foreigners. This is also why Japanese media even today don’t care for any social trends and political correctness thats happening in the west. Korea on the other hand is different. When Korea started to build up their entertainment industry, its initial goal was to spread them overseas. It didn’t bother to cater towards the native Korean people because its main target were overseas. This is why the Korean government invested tons to support Korean Wave in order to spread its influence throughout the world. And in the end, it was a huge success as you could see. Now with China, which one of these examples are they going to follow? Are they going to go with the Japanese model where it starts off inwards by building up authentic pop culture within China and wait until foreigners picks up on it and eventually let it spread? Or are they going to try the Korean model, where the government purposely “creates” a pop culture on their own and tries to sell them overseas? Honestly, China has the ability to do both. They have a huge domestic population, vast amount of ethnic Chinese living overseas that can act as a “bridge”among countries and also a powerful government enough to promote them overseas by investing tons of money. But you know whats truly holding China back? The lack of freedom among the general population and consumerism of foreign goods. You CAN’T expect to develop a sub culture or a pop culture without the people expressing themselves freely. Sub cultures are born by letting the younger people express themselves to the specific social environment they are in. You have to let those people naturally form their own “clique” or groups to let their expression and aesthetics shape itself. Whenever that stage is cleared without any government involvement to crack them down, let it naturally spread even more throughout the country and wait until you can make profit out of it. China can do this with the enormous amount of population they have. The problem is that the Chinese government is extremely sensitive to any type of social groups forming within the population and will do anything to suppress them if they feel threatened. Hence why the Chinese population has the tendency to depend on foreign pop culture if their own domestic entertainment is not their taste. Honestly if you are a Chinese American, don’t depend on China to form its own “cool” pop culture. It probably wont happen with how the country operates. Its political structure is not suitable for any type of authentic sub cultures to be born. Even if there would to be with the “guidance” of the Chinese government, it most likely wont be authentic to the general Chinese population. Sub cultures has to resonate with the general population, especially the youth. Chinese Americans(or any other Asian Americans) has to form their own identity and sub culture that can be resonated and spread among other Asian Americans.

My takeaway learning about China's culture: unfortunately due to CCP getting a lot of press & how Mao changed most of that generations thinking about mostly thinking about money & taking whatever they can has outshined China's good culture This is similar to Africans where theyre vew as poor people yet theyre culturally rich. 15:31, I can answer that from personal experience. Yes, the individual can transcend, especially growing up upper class (not new money). This can keep you inside a bubble of other cultured and upper-class people, and you'd have a lot more common shared experiences with them (you both went to private boarding school, went to euro family skii trip when you were young etc).

You may think the Chinese economy will be bigger than the US. But the Chinese economy's fast growth era is over. The Chinese economy is in serious trouble now that the debt crisis is blooming and the population is decreasing. At this rate, the Chinese economy will never become the world's biggest, and it may enter a long period of slow or no real growth. Just like the other Asia economies did. This girl is too young to understand the bad parts of Korean and Japanese culture. She is way too focused on the shining aspects. Hopefully, she grow out of it.

the Martial Arts boom caused by Bruce Lee in the late 60s and early 70s. China absolutely had a massive era where it was at the forefront and super popular. During those days other ethnic groups and races all wanted to become Chinese. Then it shifted to Japan, now it's Korea. Perhaps I'm biased, because of anime, but Japanese is the best sounding Asian language, of all the ones I've heard. Well, I did really enjoy the Dynasty Warriors games. Don't know what the real counter parts looked like, but I liked the character designs from the series.

China as a country has done a poor job marketing itself in pop culture. However that’s always why I love Chinese, they have that I don’t give a eff attitude. It's not that China isn't good with soft power, think about Tiktok and Temu and city infrastructure, no poo on streets and safe, and that majority of Chinese are hospitable to white people. It's just that countries that are jealous are doing their very best to make sure people don't know about it through their media channel. Just for instance why is Fungbro not getting more views because their contents are great. This is meant to be the anti Chinese decade if not century. It's a strategy is what I am saying. Some people believe the rise in popularity of K-pop was to offset Asian hate in certain parts of the world. DBSK was probably a cooler group compare to current K-pop groups but they were not popular in the world. So if someone is jealous of you, then you should be proud that you are doing something right.

So as a Chinese, what is there to be jealous of? Koreans are our closest blood brothers/sisters. Their win is our win. Just enjoy it. And I'm sure many of them deep down know, that our win is also their win. (I have several Korean friends, so I can feel this sentiment, despite the current geopolitical situation, they are aware that the Chinese are like their distant cousins.)

Very cool conversation. I became a fan of Chinese dramas, and thus became much more interested in all the recent China news, culture, state of religious freedom, etc. I pray for the Chinese people, and it's hard to get a full picture of life within the nation's borders due to the language barrier. But, Chinese dramas have a lot of creative and unique perspectives, and through them I see the creativity, intelligence, and artistry of the people behind them. It's just one tiny sliver of China, and not any more real than Hollywood, but when I pray for the people in China I can appreciate the stories they've brought to life and all the people behind the scenes who made them possible.

As an Asian American more specifically Korean American I can say that we're all East Asians no matter where you go in America. During the covid we all were targeted for being Asian. We as Asians don't see Europeans, Latinos, or Arabs and differentiate them based on what countries they're from. What I am trying to say is that it's one of those teenagers' things and she'll get over it when she gets older.

I love Chinese and admire their beauties and cultural arts . I didn't see the Chinese jealous of another Asian. To be honest in truth they are the least jealous group I've encountered among the three from from my decades years of experience with living closely with the Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Oh Boo-Hoo. Chinese have almost all the famous Martial Artists. All the movies and shows in the USA that are landmarks in terms of representation are about Chinese: Warrior, Crazy Rich Asians, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Shang-Chi, American Born Chinese. Chinese are still visible in pop culture and are part of the big 3: China, Korea, and Japan. Chinese have it pretty good if you ask me. South-East Asians have it way worse.

I was born into a poor family and came to Seoul to study. I studied hard because I thought I had to lead my family. And with some small success, I helped my hometown. But my parents were already working hard so they didn't need my help and instead helped me. I was grateful to my parents. And I felt proud of my parents' hard work. But my parents were grateful to me for going out and working hard. This story is a story between Koreans and Korean-Americans. I hope this comment will be a reference to someone.

I think we got a give China the benefit of the doubt because during the early 20th century China was in so much turmoil it was not in a position to promote its culture while Japan was already making moves to spread its culture around the world. At the same time, and I am not saying this to diss Japan, but there is some stuff that is thought of as Japanese that has its origins in China. From a popular media standpoint, the inspiration for Dragon ball is one of the obvious ones. Another lesser known one is the Kitsune anime trope. China has stories about Kitsune dating back 2000 years and the nine tailed fox originated in China(look up Classic of Mountains and Seas - Jiu Wei hu)

First, I wanna give credit to the Fung bros for their great insight and analysis. I think the big elephant in the room needs to be talked about. With the great potential that China has, the CCP has killed all creativity, innovation, history, culture etc. It is difficult to detach oneself from his/her government. Even as Asians, when we go abroad and people ask us where we are from, we mention USA or Canada on top of our ethnicity. Then those people assume we would act/behave a certain way because we are from Canada or the US.

China has a great transit system. Their railroads are great. China has some great movies and dramas. China has a great culture. She should be Chinese and proud and hold her head up.

But at that time as an Asian man I never felt any advantage from them in the dating market with western girls. But the recent success of K-pop and K-Drama actually start to influence positively on Asian males in the western dating market. Why do you think K-pop and K-Drama are more influential for Asian men's Dating Market Value than the former? (I think Bruce Lee was quite sexy but he didn't seem to arouse any advantage for Asian males....)

China has always had a negative PR image on the world stage for a multitude of obvious reasons. Economic prosperity is only one half of the equation. It's a hard sell when the country is widely perceived to be a quasi-dictatorship. It's like how oil rich Middle Eastern nations are considered pariahs in the West despite their industrial boom. If democratic and socially liberal attitudes don't follow, it won't matter how wealthy a country becomes. Any civilization that wishes to achieve sustained longevity must not actively repress its own populace. Tyrannies always reach a tipping point before they devolve, it's inevitable.

softpower is a much harder bubble to grow and maintain than hardpower and can collapse or burst much easier and faster. only a few countries have achieved to establish but even the majority of the 1st world countries don't have this honor. germany for example is the largest economy in europe. but if you ask people around the world about germany typical answers will likely be luxury cars, beer, sausage, oktober fest and nazis. not really softpower. in the 80s western germany had more softpower than today. "neue deutsche welle" which was similar to korean hallyu wave. but that was a different time and only memories are left

Chinese culture used to be on top. Specifically Hong Kong soft culture. From kung fu to gangster flicks. We were loved by all. Being associated with China now is pretty bad.

I personally think Chinese culture is superior (I'm a history nerd, especially Chinese history nerd), because it's history is deeper and more ingrained than that of Korean or Japanese culture, both of which are currently heavily American influenced. Chinese culture doesn't change much no matter what happens, it influences itself. Chinese entertainment is not as developed because it's less easily influenced by American culture, but I think that is a good thing, because honestly Chinese culture is more unique than Korean or Japanese culture, both of which emulate American culture so much that it's weird. Also, virtually all the good things from Ancient Japanese and Ancient Korean culture originated in China, ultimately. I personally think that the Chinese people just need to celebrate their ancient culture more and American influenced culture less. The only reason why Chinese is hated comes from America and the West. Americans literally hate and are racist towards Chinese with no repercussions and nobody blinks. Japanese people, especially the older folks, are racist and xenophobic towards Chinese people, it seems, because that racism is built in modern Japanese Americanized culture. Koreans look down on us Chinese because we are considered backward and poor and unAmerican. In today's society, being more American means higher status and class.

Imagine trying to negotiate coolness, that says it all. Who else does this except the Chinese.

my theory. it'll come one day, but maybe it'll take 20-30 years. The good thing they have going, is their internet not being connected to the rest of the world. Therefore It'll be the only place in the world where undiscovered modern arts and subcultures will exist one day.
