No J-31 exists, only FC-31 for the export market. Only fighters procured by the Chinese Air Force will have the J prefix added. Because of the Chinese Air Force is in dire need of a medium-sized stealth naval fighter, the developers of the FC-31 seized the opportunity to transform the FC-31 into a fighter that the Chinese air force was willing to purchase and named the J-35.

Unfortunately, the chicken hawk warmongers in Washington seem intent upon getting the Navy into a war with China that it cannot win. Quite aside from hypersonic “carrier killers” with ranges far greater than carrier aircraft, there is the stark reality that American financiers have destroyed the country’s industrial capacity, having exported much of it to China. America currently possesses 1% of the world’s ship building capacity, while China has over 40%. This is an even greater disparity than the Japanese faced after their Pearl Harbour moment. And despite having the world’s best warships, best aircraft and naval aviators at that time, they were doomed to lose due to America’s vastly superior industrial capacity. As usual, the only winners in America will not be the heroes on the boats, but the tribe on Wall Street rubbing their hands together and salivating over their profits.

Lucky you. There is a RU-vid video of an engineer giving a detailed tour of the SR-71 engine design, which was very interesting as well. I know that the reason the Russian 5th Gen or China's cannot compete with the F-22/F-35 is the AESA radar and engines. The F-35's engine, because it was designed to be single engine, had to be over engineered in the reliability department. Getting the Navy to sign on, who usually prefers dual engine because you are over open ocean, meant that the engine had to super reliable.

@joebartles3986 F23 was an excellent stealth fighter but wasn't selected over the F22. F-22 STEALTH is far superior than the CHINESE J-31. F-22 CAN BE ON YOUR 6 and you wouldn't know it. F15 EX is going to be a beast of burden on the foreign fighter/bombers with F-22/F-35 flying cap/BIG BROTHER. F-15 or F-18 in super cruise mode takes the forward "INTERCEPTER" ROLE at lower altitude as the stealthy F-22/F35 pounces with their over the horizon radar locks of FIRE AND FORGET TARGETING. NOT TO MENTION THE AWACS FLYING CAP is like having extra eyes. In WW2, P-38's were a welcomed sights when the corsair weren't fast enough or powerful enough to win against the zeros. P-38's flew cap over the transitioning Corsairs getting jumped by Japanese zeros.

Comparing the bottom shape of F-35 and that of FC-31/J-35, the stealth of the F-35 is definitely worse than that of the J-35, not to mention the next-generation left-handed metamaterial full-spectrum stealth technology of the J-35, larger built-in missile bays, safety and stability of supersonic and supersonic cruise. There will be some effect on the RCS; there's really no way around that when you increase the surface area. No reason _not_ to add low observable characteristics to the gun pod, but it looks like the doctrine at play will see the gun pods _not_ attached until air defenses have been dealt with. If so, then the stealth characteristics of the gun pods will be less important, especially if the jets are loaded up with external stores.

Boramae is a great fighter. The current external weapons configuration is actually quite useful and a good compromise. They get a low observable fighter with large firepower. The radar cross section will be primarily from the external stores at a level that makes high maintenance stealth coatings and gap fillers unnecessary. The internals were largely copied from the F-35 with permission and under tech transfer license. They get many of the benefits of the F-35 with much lower operating costs snd maintenance time. By sacrificing ultimate stealth they save time and money in development snd in operations. They still have access to actual F-35s when they really need deep stealth. This could eventually become their primary workhorse fighter, replacing F-16s and F-15s at some point during the 2030s even if they keep using external weapons.

J-35 uses 2 engines mainly because of efficiency and better failsafe as proven by F/A-18E. Some notes from a member of the China watcher community. The black FC-31 demonstrator which first flew in 2012 was very far from a ready fighter and was initially intended as a budget stealth fighter for the export market. It used RD-33 engines from a Mig 29. It was later used as the basis and developed into the J-35 (no official name exist yet) with the first real prototype flying in 2021. J-35 will be a naval stealth fighter intended for China's new catobar carriers so equivalent of the F35C, it is unclear if there will be a version intended for the air force as well. The design have changed over the years and originally the canopy opened backwards, only last year did they swap it so they must have found some reason. In general we have very little information on the plane, the engines are a version of the WS-13 engine but the final engine is supposed to be the in development WS-19. Most guesses put its IOC around 2025.

Moreover, an ally yet not a founding member like Israel gets F 35s. How is this political hypocrisy justified? I would say that particularly prototype borrows from both the F-35 and F-22. The prototypes have since changed from this one though. The wings and horizontal stabs now have a slightly different shape, as well as the vertical stabs. The vertical stabs now look similar to the F-35's, whereas the wings - more like the F-22. The cockpit has also slightly changed and opens forward like the F-35. The pitot tube is only there for flight testing. The newer prototypes don't have it.

Correction: The MiG-23 had the naval F-4 intakes, not the MiG-25/31. The design for that specific jet was taken from the A-5 Vigilante, as that was an upcoming western interceptor in the works at the time (but was ultimately scrapped due to projected costs and the technology already being obsolete by the time of consideration). The F-4 had nothing to do with the MiG-25's development.

The problem with the F35 is that the airframe is too bulky, which increases the air resistance of the airframe, slows the flight speed, consumes a lot of fuel, and has a short range. J35 is a stealth carrier-based aircraft improved by Shenyang Aircraft Research Institute based on FC31. It currently uses self-developed engine WS13 (RD93 imitation), and the latest version uses WS19 engine. The maximum thrust is 11 tons, which is equivalent to developing the early model of WS10. . The J20 currently in service uses a WS10C engine with a thrust of 14 tons. The WS15 high-thrust engine was just installed in the first two weeks, with a maximum thrust of 18 tons. It is expected to be fully replaced with WS15 engines in 2024. The speed and maneuverability of the J35 is much better than that of the F35. As for which one is more advanced, the integrated avionics system or the weapon system, the current information is limited and it is unknown!

It's my understanding that the F-35A and F-35B (w/ lift fan) air frames are optimized for the STOVL function meaning it needs to have small wings to minimize catching air turbulence on the vertical landing part but that compromises lift and thus maneuverability. Sound correct?? The F-35A & F-35B looks like a "fat" jet with stubby wings to me. I know the F-35C (carrier variant) has larger wings than the A & B so it has greater maneuverability/lift and helps with launching in "beast mode" full of weapons/fuel. Please correct me if any of this is wrong. Although the F-35C looks better than the F-35A & F-35B with the bigger wings, it still kind of looks like a "fat" plane and I'm glad the DOD wouldn't let it be used for Top Gun-Maverick. The F/A-18 Super Hornets still looks more sleek. Overall the classified information about the F-35 will let us know if it was worth the $1.7 trillion to $2 trillion spent but it may take decades before we know. Is the less maneuverable BVR concept loaded with networked technology/weapons a good choice? Or should we have ditched the F-35 (or just limited production to F-35Bs for the Marines) to build more F-22s which everyone agrees is a winner?

Great video, thanks for the analysis. In 2016, Su Bin pled guilty of downloading the blueprints of the F-22 and F-35. I agree no need to be angry at the Chinese, but the intel services that allowed both of those in their entirety no less to be on one network deserve a LOT of anger. Most say they aren't as stealthy -- I've seen numbers saying factors of 10 to 100 but not sure if that's without radar opacity items on the jet, but they are going back and forth with US on having leading edge in AA missiles now. Part of the blame goes to Russia for sharing their latest planes with China which China took and started making themselves despite agreements to the contrary, because OF COURSE THEY DID, DUH. Wouldn't surprise me if the J-35 is our F-35 blueprint but with the tail replaced with a Mig of Flanker engine setup they got from their Russian jets. In that we are failing to properly wage economic war on a China that acts like they are fully at war with us, I'm at least glad to see the NGAD / stealth programs being pushed full throttle... though we wouldn't need that rush if our leaders would stop pumping money into the CCP's war machine. Also, the F-35 just got a huge engine upgrade (not in VSTOL yet but coming later) that increases top speed to on par with estimate for J-35 and increases range by 300+ miles, so some good news.

I'm a Chinese military fan and wanted to see what overseas views on the J-35 were. Saw your video and found some fundamental errors. The FC-31 (No 31001) is not the J-35. The J-35 did develop from the FC-31 but they are not the same. The FC31 prototype (No. 31001) shown in the video is already in the museum. The leaked prototype photo of the J35 is currently number is 350003. So your analysis can only be said to be for the FC-31, but not the J35. It's like saying you're using the YF-16 test flight video to analyze the F-16E/F , you can't get to get the right analysis results The differences between FC-31 and J35 will be more, FC-31 is based on land and J35 is for aircraft carrier. The design ideas are completely different. As a fighter pilot you weren't able to spot these issues, it is very regrettable. This information is easily accessible on youtube and wikipedia.

In engineering there is a phenomenon called "convergence of design". That is given a set of physical laws to solve an engineering problem all solutions converge to similarity. A simple example is bows an arrows. In primitive days there are no computers top hack and steal from nor much communications across oceans but similar bows an arrows are used from African tribes to Chinese and down to Australian continent. In order to minimized the radar profile or reflection you have to physically shape your plane in a certain way. The shapes and positions of wings, alerons, canards, fusilage etc will have to be optimized and will converge to a similar shape. The real test is not the outside shape but the avionics inside the plane and the engines.
