In this video I do a fighter pilot reaction to the US Air Force F-22 versus the Chinese J-20 fighter jet. When it comes to fighter jets there is a lot to compare. At the end I will give my reaction to which aircraft is best from a Thunderbird Fighter Pilot perspective.

Pretty unbiased video, kudos. As far as I'm aware according Chinese sources, the J20 was designed to equip the WS15 engine (basically China's gen 5 engine). Although the Russian AL31 was used on some J20 prototypes, the production J20s also never actually used Russian engines and instead used the WS10B as an interim option before WS15 goes into service.

@@MaxAfterburnerusa hey man, here is some minor correction for the above info, the first batch of J20 positioned in Northern China uses and still uses the Russian built Engines (AL31F), while J20 is originally designed with a more powerful engine in mind, when the prototype of WS15 (built using one of the designed provided by Mikoyan) came out, the Chinese air force found that while WS15 is much more powerful, it has very short life span before needing to undergo major maintenances. So China basically halted the production of J20 until Ws10 engine matured (which is an engine similar to F110 but uses some modern materials technologies).

1. Even if I did cede the point, who really cares as F22s aren't designed to dogfight, why is everyone stuck in cold war thinking? But call me crazy and tell me every engagement will be a dogfight, I already know how this conversation goes. 2. It can carry 6? The F22 can carry 8. I don't get you? 3. The F22 can also do both things? Why is this better? 4. I mean, maybe who could say? I think the SU57 burns unicorn horns that were mashed up into powder and distilled into alcohol. Just saying a series of things proves nothing, "post-development", if you have classified information about the makeup of the stealth coating of both the J20 and the F22 and are qualified to tell us the differences... then don't, pretty sure that's treason to talk about. But, I'm willing to play the odds and say you have zero qualifications to speak on it. Well anyway, maybe all your points were right and Google translate misinterpreted your thoughts, but I remain dubious.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, to me, really demonstrated a huge difference between NATO ops and the Russian battle plan in that with the Russians, there's no AWACS, there's no situational awareness, there's nothing. They trust their pilots, that hardly ever even get to train, to be able to spot targets and shoot them down as soon as they're in range. Meanwhile, we're assigning targets *miles* out of max range and giving our pilots such a situational awareness advantage that, to me, it would boggle my mind if the Russians and Chinese even got to fire a shot (at least, for any reason other than having more planes than we had missiles in the case of the Chinese).

Glad to see that you’re able to discuss the technical aspects of the two aircrafts like an aviation enthusiast without getting into the politics of the two countries 👍👍👍 Regarding the design of the J-20, it was originally designed to match with the WS-15 engine with thrust vectoring and supercruise capability, just that the WS-15’s development was lagging behind the development of the J-20 airframe and China had no choice but to use the AL-31 engines as an interim plan before the WS-15 engine becomes available. You would probably have noticed that J-20s were only produced in small numbers initially because China didn’t want to field too many J-20s that are equipped with the AL-31 that eventually have to be upgraded to the WS-10C and WS-15 engines. You can clearly see that the number of J-20s rolling off the production line started exploding after the WS-10C has matured in 2019.

True story but only 2 or 3 pilots that have responded to me have perspective on how bad this really is. Landing on the Midway was hard in daytime, harder at night, harder at night in the rain, and unbelievable at night in a hurricane. We had to land 35 planes in nighttime hurricane conditions circa 1972-73. F4's, A6's, etc. One pilot told me they never saw the ship once. The only reason we didn't dodge the storm was none of the planes had fuel to make it to Danang. We were the only game in town and had to stay put while the storm sprayed over the island. All 35 returned "safely" and all of our prayers were answered. Fly Navy I bet the F22 or F35 could handle this better.

Thanks for the video! I enjoyed both hype videos. If I was to choose an air superiority fighter I'd probably pick F22. But I think it makes very little sense to compare the 2 for a dog fight because as I understand the J20 is built for a totally different purpose. The reason it has a large body and weapon bays is to have both enough fuel to patrol the South China Sea and to take out tankers and AWACS using the PL-15 missiles. Canards are bad for stealth but for the original purpose of J20 it only needs forward stealth so it's not a big deal. The recent encounter of J20 and F35 suggests the likely tactic of PLAAF is to use AWACS to track stealth planes and J20 to deliver a long range missile outside opponent's missile range. The more likely scenario of an encounter is likely to be J20 v F35 or even J35 v F35. But with the introduction of the YJ21 hypersonic missile I highly doubt that will ever happen.

A lot of the secret of the F-22 is with the absurdly advanced flight controls. The jet itself 'knows' more about how to achieve any manuver asked about the pilot than the pilot needs to know themselves to a degree that no other jet ever has accomplished. This is difficult to build into a plane and program, the amount of testing and data that has to be gathered to just write the software is absurd. The J-20 probably lacks this given it's rapid development and temporary engine usage (was set to be upgraded from day 1 so fully integrated flight control automation probably wasn't a thing). It's like this - in an F-18 there's flight control stability with fly by wire...great...but the pilot still needs to know that at whatever speed, angle of attack, throttle setting etc. achieving a manuver might require different inputs. Say at slow speeds with a high angle of attack, the vertical tail surfaces aren't getting as much air so pointing the nose to your target might require you to give one engine more thrust than the other and somehow moving the elevator tails independently (which traditional flight controls don't allow you to do)...the pilot would have to know how and immediately do those things. In the F-22 you'd just give it left pedal and the plane will yaw doing all the tricks itself even if the rudders don't move at all. Hard to explain but hopefully this makes sense.

My aerodynamics engineer friend told me thrust vectoring is the defining feature of the 5th gen IF and ONLY IF the jet is expected to fight in dogfights. In the high-speed maneuver, the number of independently controlled surfaces and the size of each of them with well calibrated and model-UI control system is way more important than thrust vectoring. And this remains pretty much true until approx 500kmh so thrust vectoring in the low speed maneuver ... basically the stuff you see in every airshow and in some cases navy landing on CVs.
