Today we have another patreons' choice video. In it we look at the so-called "Jungle SKS", which was a Chinese Type 56 Carbine fitted with a fiberglass (often called bakelite) stock. We take a look at it and compare it to a more common Chinese SKS.
China was probably the first nation to produce the SKS outside of Russia. It designated it as the Type 56 Carbine, with the first examples coming out of the Jianshe Arsenal in 1956. These early carbines were built with Soviet parts and advisors overseeing the line. After a couple years, they would be made entirely from Chinese parts.
The first Type 56s were virtual clones of the late Russian style. An early change was to move the rear sling swivel from under the stock to the left side. Around 1965, the bayonet would go from a blade type to a spike. Then the sling swivel would be moved back to the bottom of the stock. China would introduce many changes aimed at lowering costs and speeding up production. For example, the lightening cuts on the bolt carrier, rear sight, and bayonet mount were eliminated. The trigger guard would go from being milled to stamped and welded, and the gasblock design was simplified to require fewer machining steps. Finally in the late 1970s, the barrel was no longer screwed into the receiver, and instead was pressed and pinned in. While most stocks were made from various types of wood, China did make some from a fiber glass material. This style was intended for use in humid environments where a wood stock might swell or rot.

Thanks for dropping some knowledge on me Misha! I've been into guns for years and have owned an SKS for 15 years and I never knew there was a Chinese SKS with a "bakelite" stock.

Excellent informative video. I have one of these early type 56 rifles with the blade bayonet which came in a wood stock but I was lucky enough to find one of these fiberglass stocks for sale years ago so I bought it as they are very interesting and seem to be quite rare

Thanks Misha! I've had a jungle stock for a couple years. It needs epoxied back together as the 2 halves have separated. It has the number 254 in a 4 corner diamond molded inside the left half. It takes a blade bayonet and has a side sling mount.

Excellent comparison. Coincidentally I have a nice early Chinese barreled receiver I picked up as a build project and have acquired a "jungle stock" for the build.

I could have had one for $70...WAAAHHHH!!! As for the bayonets, I have read that the cruciform (spike) bayo is better for stabbing, as it is less likely to hang on bone and the wound is not as likely to close as a blade stab.

Of all the stories I've heard over the years as to why the Chinese went with a spike bayonet, the one I am about to tell is my favorite, and it might even be true... Supposedly there was a border dispute with North Korea and blade bayonets were snapping off when used against the think heavy winter coats of the North Korean soldiers. But the Chinese found that the spike bayonet on their Type 53's would go through. Seeing this the Chinese adapted the spike bayonets from their Type 53's to the SKS and AK. Or so the story goes
@814790
@814790 5 лет назад
The spike bayonet was developed by the russians for the SKS Type 45, but they switched to a blade bayonet in late 49 or 50. The chinese found that the spike bayonet was just as effective as the blade in combat but was much easier to produce because it could be milled out of steel bar.

I Purchased, one of these SKS’s in 1992 from a gun shop what the Bakelite stock. I I love the feel of the rifle and have been asked many times. What is the story behind the stock? Thanks misha for the history Lesson on where the stocks originated. For many years, I thought a private owner put the stock on but that did not fit with the story that the owner of the gun shop said to me, which was he Purchased several crates so they were original military just as you pointed out. Thanks 🙏 again for a Very informative videos. You earned yourself a new subscriber. Have a nice day. 😎

I’ve got that same SKS with the red Bakelite stock and the blade bayonet.. it’s interesting, there is two different versions of the red Bakelite stock. One like what is in this video, the other has a different place for the rear sling mount. And sometimes the upper hand guard is different.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 лет назад
Yep exactly, the sling swivel moved around just as it did on the wood stock. The other HG type though could be paired with either the bakelite or wood buttstocks.

I bought one of these stocks to go on a cracked stock Albanian import. The crack turned out to be on the hand guard. The original stock has a name on it written in Roman letters . Now , I have to get another cracked stock SKS because I like the original. And a jungle sling. Hog hunting in the Sunshine State.

Still regretting that I didn’t pick up one of those $300 Chinese SKS rifles Classic had a year or two ago, the stocks needed some work but they were mechanically solid. I guess I missed the ship for cheap Chinese or Russian SKS rifles... By the way, nice shirt.
@richard1165
@richard1165 5 лет назад
Honestly, its best to try to find one that has been butchered....I mean "sporterized", and try to restore it. Will it be a perfectly functioning gun out of the box? Probably not. Will it be cheaper? More often than not, yeah. Will it be numbers matching? Typically no, but I've been surprised before. You'll learn more about the weapon this way, and of course; at least you'll HAVE an example of it before there is literally none left in the country to buy.
@chrisloUSA
@chrisloUSA 5 лет назад
@@richard1165 If I have to change the stock and re-equip the bayonet, I don't mind, numbers matching isn't a requirement for me.
@richard1165
@richard1165 5 лет назад
My rule of thumb, for the most part, is that I'll take on nearly any sporterized gun provided that the barrel isn't chopped down. Even scope mount holes can be filled up with allen-head set screws and careful tig welding, but I can't replace 8 inches of missing barrel unless I just flatout replace the entire thing. There are exceptions though, for example, I have a sporterized Type 38 Arisaka (with the Chrysanthemum) that I'm fixing up. Needs a new stock and magazine assembly as well as a barrel with proper sights. Luckily for me, the seller threw in a correct original replacement barrel with the sights, so its totally a feasible project. It will often just be a judgement call based on your own abilities, but you'll learn either way.
@chrisloUSA
@chrisloUSA 5 лет назад
Richard That is awesome, for me though, if something needs to be Tig Welded than it’s beyond my skill.
@therideneverends1697
@therideneverends1697 5 лет назад
+Richard if i where you i would hire a woodworker to make you a stock, it will be cheaper than an original and the originals are marked to the gun, if you have a blank stock you can mark it and make everything look right

That wooden one can't be a 66 or 68 gun, know that the '56 + first 2- digits = year of manufacture' equation isn't accurate. For example, i have a Type-56, factory 816, serialnumber 1.8 million which is made in 1973. Has both late and early features, like a milled triggerguard but also a pinned barrel (yes, it is all matching) That wooden example must be a 70's production, due to that stamped triggerguard
