A scene from Japanese NHK's historical drama '坂の上の雲' (Saka no ue no kumo, Clouds over the Hill).
During the First Sino-Japanese War (中日甲午战争, 日清戦争) (1894-1895) a group of Japanese soldiers occupied a small village in China and forced its villagers to hand over all their foods, drinks, and etc. Moreover, a Japanese first sergeant proudly said
"This dirty and filthy street is the conqueror's road"
"It is a great pleasure that Chinese people treat us with utmost courtesy".
Seeing this, a Chinese old man strongly protested, but he was soon hit and thrust to the ground. A Japanese reporter tried to help the old man and his grandson, but he was pushed to the ground by the old man too.
Bursting with rage, the old man cried out.
"这孩子的父母都被你们给杀死了!"
(This boy's parents were all killed by you!)
"终有一天这孩子就报酬的!"
(Someday this boy will definitely have his vengeance on you!)
Hearing the old man crying out, the reporter asked the Japanese soldier about what exactly the old man said. The Japanese first sergeant, however, deceived him, saying that the old man just expressed his gratitude to them.

To those who didn't understand, the Chinese old man was saying they have nothing left to eat and something along the lines of the kid's parents were killed by the Japanese. China back then is similar to the Syria of today. It was a terrible situation.

China during the late years of the Qing dynasty was very weak and them weak made them vulnerable to being bullied around by several nations, Britain, Japan, France, Germany which is why they made themselves stronger. So it wouldn't happen again.

Wars bring out the very best and worst of humanity.... Doesn't matter what you fight for or who you fight for, war is hell, it comes with the territory. My grandparents fought the IJA in second Sino Japanese war and lost most of the family during it but I don't blame those Japanese soldiers grandchildren for it...everything is a matter of circumstances and that time period just happened to allow it. Anyways greetings from China, I know we don't have the best relationship right now but it'll pass.

@待化的冰 yeah that's why people like China's culture and not Japanese. Oh wait.. China culture is the best. We like to have people from china peeing in the street and making a shit out of themselves. We like having people of China throw trash in public whenever they go. Every thing about China is fake even your culture. Real chinese culture only exist in Malaysia, Taiwan etc but not China. Ooh Japan is a bad guy for killing our people during ww2. Says a country who fought each other killing more millions of chinese after WW2. Fucking hypocrites.

I see some people compare the massacre in first Sino-Japanese war with the Qing navy event in Nagasaki, and says Chinese are doing bad to Japanese as well, so お互い様, nothing to feel bad and Japan was fine. I mean, I'm not here only to insult Japan or critizise on Japan, but let's compare the events and see is it really the same. Let's talk about 長崎 (Nagasaki). The Chinese sailors making trouble in a brothel after they have been drunk, the police capture the drunkers and many Chinese in the navy are uphappy about how the police treat their men. Then it finally lead to a riots of Chinese navy and they attack the police stations. The Japanese citizens are also angry with those foreign ruffians and engage in the fight. It is end up as 5 deaths, 44 injury and 5 missing in Qing navy, 2 deaths and 19 injury to Japanese police and many injury to Japanese citizens. It also lead to an anti-Chinese emotion in Japanese society and many Chinese Japanese who behave good also be implicated in this anti-Chinese emotion. I would see it as a diplomatic disaster. I also stand for Japanese and I feel shame for those navy who don't respect local law in a foreign country. Most importantly, I also find it is stupid that The Qing Goverment actually use a tough attitude when they negotiate with Japan, and Japan end up by paying Qing goverment which is a shame for Japanese people. However, this first sino-Japanese war is very far from "お互い様". Take a look at massacre in 旅顺 (Port Arthur massacre) that only 36 Chinese managed to survive. The Qing local defenses insult the corpse of Japanese invasion sodiers by cutting off their arms, legs and their testis. To revenge the Qing army, commanders 河野通好 and 伊瀬知好成 gave the orders to their sodiers that killing everyone except children and old. But when the order comes to performance, Women, old and even children cannot get away from it. According to the british correspondent Frederic Villiers of "The flag daily", twenty thousand people including civilians were massacred in 4 days. An American observer O'Brien also report the Chinese captives and civilians were killed in the massacre and he saw the amputated limbs of those corpses. James Allan who's a British observer at the 旅顺 recorded what he saw in his book, "The Japanese sodiers were chasing and killing everyone in sight, the street is full of corpses and amputated limbs, it continuedly happening at night, shooting, screaming is everywhere" He saw that "The Japanese sodiers shoo the refuguees into a pond, then they shooting, poking and laughing. The water became red, mixed with organs, corpses and blood. A woman suriver climbing on the corpses, holding her baby and begging at Japanese, and got stabbed in the chest. Her baby was penetrated and hang up on the bayonet, being shaked as something to play with. The woman was struggling painfully and try to get her baby from that sodier while she was dying. She end up that been choped into pieces just like others." James Creelman, an American reporter recorded "the corpses on the street are like been gnawed by the wild beasts, were badly damaged. the corpses of businessmen piled up on the side of the road. Their tear and blood were frozen" If I am a Japanese, I would feel pity for the Chinese citizens, at least for this event. Other than "お互い様". Actually, I am touched by this video by the first looking, as I saw the friendly intention and the willing of making peace. Even though this series didn't really facing how horrible the massacre was, it describes the impact of the war on an euphemistic way by showing how the citizens afraid of Japanese. And they have made a kind heart Japanese figure to represent the good of Japanese people, taking care of kids, reflect on war. But, I have seen many comments laughing at the going down rate of this NHK series, saying the story is fake and people are over reacting on the history. No wonder why Japan try to cover or downplayed the even worse massacres during WWII. Because you don't care. You think like It is just what war looks like, and Japan is victim of nuclear boom, so nobody is winning, and that's it. I also feel bad for the booms in Japan, but it is not the excuse to rationalize those massacres. Honesly, I don't want to emphasis how dark the history was, and I wish China and Japan can finally treat each other nicely, without bias. I mean the war like this only happens after Japanese modernization. China and Japan had good friendship in the previous thousands of years. Even China fought Japan for Korea for twice, the previous conflicts were never doom the civilians. We are not only all human being but also under the same roof. The Japan in our eyes was like a small China, even your culture were mostly adopted from China. So why not try to fix the scar and try to love each others like brothers and sisters from now on? Yes, I agree. But after I have read many comments here, it makes me feel very bad. The dream of that "love each others days" could take a long way to go. Or maybe it is a unrealistic fantasy. I guess I will never forgive Japanese, same as Korean. You want to forget it, downgrade it and rationalize it. Then China and Korea will try harder to remember it, emphasis it and censure it.

The Japanese forces tended to have a better reputation in the Russo-Japanese war. While looting did happen, and the Japanese did execute locals suspected of being spies or saboteurs, Japanese soldier's tended to be well disciplined. Looting was generally punished, and though it was self serving, Japanese appointed civil governors worked to improve roads and improve sanitation and overall health in their territories. Better roads would help with Japanese logistics and better sanitation and hygiene would lessen the chance of communicable diseased being passed on to Japanese soldiers. The Russians did not try to make any such improvements and Russian troops, especially the Cossacks had a reputation for murder, rape , burning and looting. No matter how the Chinese may feel nowadays, at the time, most of the locals were pro Japanese and saw them as the lesser of two evils. The Russo Japanese war 1904-1905 by Geoffrey Jukes mentions this.

Of course, there were many accounts of how the Japanese soldiers and invasion of SEA where many of them initially welcomed them as liberators since the British and Dutch treated way horribly. For a time they prospered until the 2nd period of the war (USA vs Imperial Japan) happened and people were treated more harshly as attrition severely wounded the IJA's effort. Many of the literature aren't as popular as it didn't fit with the narrative. Especially the British scorched earth tactics put many civilians lives at below poverty and laid the blame on the Imperial Army.

The Chinese had a big problem with a decaying monarchic government, badly surpassed and overwhelmed by the Western colonialist newcomers, and to worsen matters, the Qing reigning dynasty at the end of nineteen century was failing in modernizing and assimilating the intruders overseas' scientific, technical and socio-political achievements. Japan, not less untrusful about strangers then, however had been more eclectic and pragmatic, and reacted most energetically in the correction of their vulnerabilities respect to the West powers, studying dilligently how the gaijin did things. So, the Chinese were too weak and ill prepared when confronted Japanese for their disputes with the later about the Korean affairs.

They were really corrupt
@donutrangerr
@donutrangerr 8 месяцев назад
Imperial Japan corruption became more prevalent after the initial invasion during the later stages of war. Many of the officers that "liberated" many parts of Asia are either pulled out or assassinated as the Right-Wing movement became more radical. The parliamentary decision to wage war against the U.S. because of their overconfidence in their victory against USSR, British, French was their sole downfall as they believed their might would last long. During those 8 years having SEA under their grasps, the last 3-4 years were cruel as attrition wounded their efforts in the pacific theather. To sum it up, similar to how the Qing Dynasty fail the point is: politics matter.

Let me speak about history of China, and its neighbour countries. China was the most of advanced kingdom in the world through the ancient time of civilisation meanwhile Egyptians were building ancient pyramid. Many inventors created unique items and things such as tea, gunpowder, vehicles and so on where they came at the first place of China. The Japanese was also descended from Chinese as well. (And please, it is a fact of DNA of Japanese ancestors that show a similarity to Chinese ancestors one according the scientist reseach ) Before the people who called themselves Japanese first, they were Jomon people who were isolated in Japan islands for many centuries. Next story, they developed themselves into a society in their island of Japan through a few periods of Japanese Dynasties to form Rising Sun, 日本. China was formed in ancient time of first Chinese dynasty, Xia dynasty until the last dynasty which was Qing dynasty. Qing dynasty was obviously weakened by many western powers such as Germany, Great Britain, Russia and so on. This is because they wanted to thieve more rich resources from China through their colonisation. So China was broken down influentially into many pieces of states which controlled by different rulers or warlords. And then Japan will take this opportunity to conquer China steadily that occurred first Sino-Japanese war from 1894 to 1985. Thus, the result was Taiwan and some minor of islands near China was ceded to Japan. Later on, Korea was annexed. When republic of China was discovered by a nationalist party, Kuomintang which dictated by Song Jiao ren and Sun Yat Sen at first in 1919, He, Yat Sen wanted to unite all China to become nationalist country but not whole china and certain parts of china. Communism ideology became viral in society of China because a lot of Chinese people were struggled from famine and thought manifestos of communism can abolish poverty, unite all China and equalise society and labours . During progress of unification of China done by Kuomintang, civil war between communist and nationalist was too furious. Therefore, Japan also take that occasion to invade Manchuria in 1931 for absorbing more resources to expand its military forces. Afterward, Japan started to invade rest of China from 1937 to 1945. World war 2 had been ended in China but not civil war, both of these political parties fought each other until Communists took over the whole China and united them into People's republic of China. However, Kuomintang fled to Taiwan. Moral of the story to Japanese and other westerners, think for your country before all of you awake a dragon of middle kingdom that could really dominate you in the destiny. Now China is growing up. :) So be friendly with the Chinese in appropriate way.

Sir, as a Chinese lemme spit some facts on you. Japanese may have borrowed its language and culture and have their own adaptation of Chinese Customs and Language but you telling us Japanese are Ethnically Chinese is just a flat out Chinese "Nationalistic" lie. It's like saying Malays from Malaysia are Arabs because they adopted Islam. They are classified as Japonic and has yet to be determined where and what is their origin. Second, Communism is wide spread not because people like Communism. Communist Party of China managed to take over China because they let Chiang Kai Shek and the KMT fight the Japanese during the Second Sino- Japanese War while the Communist hid up north and contribute very little and the KMT suffered heavy casualties and the people of China were so naive of Communist Propaganda and they let themselves into switching sides which let to the end of the Nanjing Decade. Thus the KMT fled to Taiwan. The moral of the story ZhongXina, read some actual history books and don't just read shit from random Wikipedia page. Don't fall for Communist Propaganda and pretend like you know shit.

The oath that the Chinese made finally came true within 50 years when the Japanese was defeated in 1945. The Chinese had fought the Japanese throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War despite being ill-equiped and ill-trained. The Japanese was naive to think that the Chinese would surrender after suffering several major defeats but the Chinese people had become more united and determined to drive the Japanese invaders and were willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect their homeland and families.

Daniell Buddy China also played an important role during the Second World War. More than a million Japanese soldiers were sent to conquer China. Despite suffering many defeats and high casulty rate, the Chinese refused to surrender and continue to resist them. Because of that, the Japanese military was unable to transfer soldiers to areas in the pacific where reinforcements were badly needed. All the atrocities commited by the Japanese had hardened the hearts and minds of the Chinese people never to surrender and fight to the death.
@ManAssome

@MrLantean
@MrLantean 8 лет назад
Daniell Buddy Despite sending more than a million soldiers to conquer and occupy China, it was impossible to garrison soldiers in every captured Chinese teritories. The Japanese created a collaborationist or puppet government at Nanjing with Wang Jingwei as head of state. Captured Kuomintang territories would placed under the puppet state, freeing large numbers of Japanese soldiers to continue their conquest of China. The Japanese even sent agents to meet with leaders of various ethnic minorities in attempt to win their support but with little success. From 1937 to 1941, China was able to halt Japanese advances despite receiving little supplies. There were no sign of collapsing for the Kuomintang. Even the armies of the collaborationist government simply defected or surrendered to the Kuomintang during military engagements. Japan's war with the United States had lift some of the pressures from China as Japan was forced to divert resources and manpower to protect their possesions in the Pacific.
@ManAssome
@ManAssome 8 лет назад
Japan's war with the United States had lift ALOT of the pressures from China. the japanese simply did not have enough manpower to finish their jobs and surely Kuomintang militaries halted some japanese advances but with massive casualties. If the pacific war didnt happen and Japan had enough resources that they needed they would be able to eliminate entire Kuomintang military. The japanese military was still able to hold their occupied territories untill the end of ww2 remember? And they were were even capturing some new territories in southern parts of China while losing in the pacific theater.

@Jeffrey Lin Well, of course it is true that modern Japan tends to conceal and disguise its dark past. And I'm nowhere near pro-Japanese as I'm Korean and my country also has many issues with them. But, as far as I know, it is not Japanese government but only a bunch of far-right politicians who are denying historical crimes of Imperial Japan. Japanese government does not deny that they have started the war, they have killed many people in the war, and they deserved to be defeated in that war. While this is definitely insufficient considering the enormous number of wartime crimes in the last century, I believe that we can at least postpone our blind hatred and try to persuade them to step forward.

Japan should apologize, China was mainly just trying to protect herself, it was the americans who dropped the nukes, so America has to apologize too, and the Japanese people can apologize for the massacre, why can the government as well?
