I been searching around all day looking for this exactly and you described it to a T. Was able to get my radio set up in a few minutes after trying to figure it out for at least 12 hours. This volunteer FF thanks you.
Thanks for posting this easy to follow CHIRP programming guide for the UV82. I've been looking for an explanation of the Duplex "OFF" function. Very handy for disabling transmit on the public service frequencies. Well done!
Thanks for the video. Looking to buy the UV-82 and use it to monitor railroad freqs. I thought that the radio would do some sort of scanning, but you've proven it will do what I need it to do.
Thank you. You showed me the step I was missing for uploading. I was unaware of the 127th frequency which was preventing me from uploading. So glad I found your video! Keep up the good work
Thanks so much man! I was ready to throw the radio out of the window! I originally wanted to set each departments frequency to have a separate channels, but it wouldn't work right. So I programmed the entire division under "FIRE" and it scans throughout.
Good Job. I had the same experience so I made the videos to help other people from experiencing the pain as well cover for my short memory when I go back to program something and forgot how I did it in the first place.....
May I know from owners of the UV-82 how is this radio holding up in terms of reliability of functions, buttons, display, battery and charger? Do they all still work? How long have you owned this radio?
+Ike Cantle Hi Ike, I've had 2 of the UV-82's for over a year now and they still function perfectly. I have to admit though, the radios are used in a really protective area as they are mounted on a bracket on my radio bench and used as scanning receivers. They rarely travel outside. I re-program them fairly often and that has been A-OK but maybe someone who uses these radios as regular walkie-talkies might have better input. Ed/Central California.
Can someone tell me how to locate important frequencies(police, national guard, fire, public works etc) that i can program into my baofeng uv-82hp for my local area. I dont have any experience on these radios but i am a quick learner! I have gotten to this point of downloading the driver and using this screen but i want to program it according to what is for my area. Thank u who ever can help me out.
Thank you Ed o/ I've been eager to get into this for some time now. I have finally ordered my UV82 along with a Nagoya 701, I am looking forward to getting hands on with it over Christmas. I have been doing a lot of research on these radios & your videos have helped alot! I have subbed as I am sure I will be referencing to them many more times :) So thanks again & until I get my call sign... this is Warren from Louisiana signing off o/
Hi. Does it matter what cable you use for this radio? I ordered one that said it would work with the UV5R as I couldn't find one that said it was for the UV-82. It shouldn't matter as long as I use chirp correct
Chase Johnson I don't know if the cables are compatible. If you put "programming cable for BaoFeng UV-82" in the Amazon search window you should see the correct cable. Here's the URL www.amazon.com/Genuine-BaoFeng-Programming-Cable-BF-F8HP/dp/B00HUB0ONK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425858258&sr=8-1&keywords=programming+cable+baofeng+uv-82
The programming cable is the same for the Wouxun family of radios as it is for the Baofeng UV-5R's, BF-F8+'s, BF-F8HP's, UV-82's etc. It is also the same programming cable for the new AnyTone TERMN-8R series of radios. Just make sure you get the programming cable that has the FTDI chip in it.
How do I type in my local PD frequency? My friend has the same one as me and is able to listen, but when I type it in it says cancel, and goes back to the 146 frequency I have saved in my radio any help? Or ideas
Thank you! I finally was able to get my radio to work because of you. I do have a question. Can I program stations where I can have some without Duplex mode on and some with Duplex mode on (using the same tprogramming CHIRPS screen)? Or do I have to program a CHIRP screen for Fire and Police with Duplex turned off, then have another CHIRP screen where I can hook up to repeaters and communicate with someone.
Hey I'm a volunteer firefighter and I bought this as a scanner but would like to use it to transmit if I had to...what would I do differently in the programming section in order to transmit back? I appreciate it in advance.
Tommy O'Connell You could go to my "UV-82 for Repeaters" video and program your UV-82 according to that procedure. MY UV-82 for REPEATER PROGRAMMING VIDEO Chirp Programming the UV-82 - Repeaters - Baofeng You will have to determine the following information: 1. Is the system VHF, UHF or 800 MHz? (The UV-82 does VHF & UHF) 2. Is the FD Radio ANALOG or DIGITAL? (UV-82 is analog) 3. What is the FD Repeater (or Base) TRANSMIT FREQUENCY? (UV-82 receive frequency) 4. What is the OFFSET (Determines the UV-82 transmit Frequency)? (Assumes the FD is using a Repeater setup and not Simplex) (A Repeater will have an OFFSET.) (A Base Station is Simplex with NO OFFSET). 5. Does the FD radio use CTCSS/PL TONEor Digital Code Squelch DCS? 6. If CTCSS, what is the TONE? (Analog System w/ CTCSS Squelch) 7. If DCS, what is the CODE? (Analog System w/ Digital Squelch DCS) The FD Service in my "Scanner Video" was VHF Analog w/ CTCSS. You can determine some of the information on: radioreference.com

thank you for this video, very clear and helpful! i am planning on getting two of these radios next week (from amazon for $35 each). is there anything i should know before i buy them as my first GMRS radios? or should i be shopping for a different radio? we have little to no cell signal here in the mountains and i would like to use two of them as communication in the woods on motorcycles and atvs (and a few big public events), i would also like to use them as a scanner to listen to the emergency and weather channels. i want my friends and family to be able to use them with me, do i need just one license or do i need a license for each radio and/or for each person? when you set the mode on the screen you had FM and NFM, when i look up the local codes i see "Mode FMN". is NFM and FMN the same thing?
MrMrsregor I would be more inclined to use the radios on the FRS frequencies which requires no license or coordination. GMRS licenses are usually tied to a specific geography and not reusable legally out of that area even though you have a license. Here's a couple of links that should interest you: www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/family-radio-service-frs As for emergency and weather channels, they can be easily programmed on the UV-82 just like any other frequency making ABSOLUTELY sure that you disable the transmitter so you can't possibly transmit on a Fire or other Emergency Service Channel. The video you watched shows you how to disable transmit on a specific memory channel while leaving other channels available for transmit. On the issue of NFM and FMN: They're probably both the same but more importantly is the following: GMRS is FM (Wide Band FM) @ 25 KHz spacing FRS is NFM (Narrow Band FM) @ 12.5 KHz spacing One other issue is the question of; Is the UV-82 FCC Certified for service in either the FRS or GMRS bands however, as I'm not the "radio police" I don't think I'll get into that issue. You can research it via google. Good Luck Ed/Central California
Legally these radios cannot be used to transmit on FRS, MURS, and GMRS frequencies at all as they are not certified by the FCC for Part 95 operations. Even if you did use these radios for FRS, GMRS, MURS transmissions, I would not be posting it anywhere on the internet as the FCC Enforcement Division can and will use it to slap you with fines and other legal action. The AnyTone TERMN-8R is legal for GMRS, FRS and MURS transmissions as it is already built into the firmware and the radio has gone through the certification criteria by the FCC so it is Part 95 as well as Part 90 legal.
18dmedic thank you ! i ordered one and saw that is is not FCC certified and just set it up as a scanner. i am not licensed yet, but i am enjoying it as a scanner very much. if i get licensed, the AnyTone TERMN-8R is more money than i want to spend, is there a radio (not expensive) that i can mount in my jeep for communication from one jeep to the next, or should i just get an old CB (we are not transmitting far)?
Did you program it with a cable? Seems that’s the only way to store names. There is also a setting called MDF-A (and B) that tells it which info to display, haven’t played with it yet, but you can cycle through frequency/name/number.
Glad to help. I've got a bunch of videos about the Uniden BCT15x and BCD996P2 scanners on my "Erod1944 Channel" and presently I'm working on one concerning NOAA Weather alerts on the BCT15x. Good Luck !! Ed/Central California
what is the cord called and how to I find one? The cord you used to connect the radio to the computer. I have the end that connects to the radio but it is a ear piece, not a USB.
+Amanda Bittola Here's an Amazon link to the USB Programming Cable I used in the video. www.amazon.com/Authentic-Genuine-Programming-Cable-BaoFeng/dp/B00HUB0ONK?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00 It's called a PC03 FTDI Authentic Genuine USB Cable and the vendor on Amazon is Baofeng.
I purchased a UV-82/A58... but it refuses to go into scan moto a de. I am able to load had freqs into channels …. but when I press and press the scan button nutten happens! Of course the instruction manual is junk... but it only says press the *scan button. The voice says "scanning" begins... but nothing happens... I am not using a software hookup since nothing available for A58... the water proof model... Any web sites out there that has a clue as to whats whats? Sorry I bought this thing.... My ICOMs are a dream to program and no mystery. It will receive and transmit on a freq channel... OK. but press the scan button once or hard or easy it does NUTTEN.
I cant open the CHIRP Software. If I run the .exe there is only one Message: "Error reporting is enabeld [...]" after press OK (no other choice) the programm is closed again...
bubblehead7680 Here's two more videos that might be helpful. Chirp Programming the UV-82 - Simplex & Dual-Watch - Baofeng Chirp Programming the UV-82 - Repeaters - Baofeng
The Erod1944 Channel That's awesome, thanks. My programming cable should be here in about three more days. I tried programming manually but think I am not doing something right. We shall see.
Antonio Perez Yes. You can clearly program the radio via the DTMF+ keyboard located on the UV-82. It's just so much easier via a computer and the chirp radio.
I spent 3-4 hrs programming 13 frequencies , but I don't hear them work on the UV-82. It did send all the 13 to the radio. I am just using this as a scanner. But it only works or at least I can hear it work , when I manually insert the 6 digit frequencies in frequency mode, not by the programming in the channel mode function. What could be wrong with the channel mode programming. I must be missing a step somewhere. I changed the scan function, none of them seem to work for me. (CO, TO, SE)
+FIREARM TACTICAL DEFENSE Try focusing on just one channel on your 13 channel scan and see if you can get it "aligned" with your "test transmitter". Just lock it on that channel and forget about scanning for a bit. The only reason I can think of why you can't hear a channel is that; 1. The saved receive frequency is incorrect. 2. The Choice of CTCSS or DCS is incorrect. 3. The "number" selected in CTCSS of DCS is incorrect. Another possibility is that the "test radio" you're transmitting to your scanning UV-82 with has a transmit offset in place for working with repeaters and is actually transmitting on a frequency offset from your UV-82 "scanner" indicated receive frequency. i.e. On UHF you might be listening to 443.075 MHz but your test transmitter is transmitting on 448.075 MHz (trying to hit a repeater receiver). If you focus on just one channel in relationship to your test transmitter it should start to make more sense.
+The Erod1944 Channel Thanks for your reply. So I got it fixed. But I miraculously don't know how. All I did was change the tones on all of them from (TSQL) like you had on video to (NONE), and then had the scanner automatically start on channel mode.   Frequencies were all correct. NO CTCSS or DCS on any of them since I'm not transmitting. No offsets either. Im not sure if the changes I made had an impact or it was just a BAD UPLOAD to my UV-82.  I really love this little Baofeng radio. The audio is really awesome. It makes me want to pull my hair off for spending $750.00 on my (two) hunting Vertex 450's 3 years ago. For $27. This thing is awesome. Hey, so If I press the scan functions it scans and finds someone talking, but after they are done speaking, it resumes to scan again and finds another channel to locate. This is cool. My guess is, do I have to stop it with the exit /tab button to stop the scan? , otherwise it just keeps going. Thanks for your tips. Please make more UV-82 videos . We love them!
Yeah, they're nice little radios - I've also been getting them at about $28ea on Amazon and I've got 4 of them mounted on my radio bench with battery eliminators & outside antennas/pre-amps sitting on Railroad, Fire, EMS & the local High School Frequencies. One per frequency. It gets a little noisy sometimes but I don't miss anything. What I do to stop the scan is give the Push-to-Talk button a little "squirt" and that stops it. What you seemed to have done to correct the problem is to remove the requirement for CTCSS or DCS frequencies on the receive side. That will work great unless you find yourself in an RF congested area with others using your frequency. If that happens you have two choices; 1. Put up with the noise. 2. Activate CTCSS or DCS via TSQL. In the meantime, I'm glad it's working for you and "Carry-On". Ed/Central California/Retired AT&T Radio Guy.
Eros I desperately need your help. I screwed up and might have pushed an incorrect button. I reset all lost my 10 channels. that's okay. but if Insert a frequency on frequency mode it cycles or toggles between the same freq on both A& B and you can't hear anything. What buttons do I need to fix. I don't believe this has anything to do with reprograming, . it's something I manually did . I remember scanning both A& B be and that's where my problem started. I can't listen to Nothing now no matter the channel or frequency. I'm getting frustrated with this thing. I hope I can fix it.
+FIREARM TACTICAL DEFENSE The First Question Is: Did you save your working programming file ? If you did save your file , just reload the file into the radio and the radio should restore. If you didn't save your programming file, reset the radio in the manual mode (see 1:00 on this video) and restart your programming from scratch.
+The Erod1944 Channel - Yes saved programming file. So when I pulled out the ear piece from the scanner it stopped cycling between A & B. I reprogrammed it and it is good as new now. This thing is very sensitive sometimes. Is there a way , where I can only program my 10 channels ONLY on A. Every time I program it inserts 10 of my channels on A and 10 on B. I hate that! Is there a way I can only program on A only??
The A & B Displays get their information from the same Memory Location in the 127 memory capacity. It is normal for a Frequency placed in a memory cell to appear on both the A & B displays. The 127 Frequency Memory Locations are used by both A & B Displays. The Dual-Watch feature of the radio uses this method to allow monitoring of two frequencies but both the A & B displays still use the same data base to provide the function. I made a video about this however, I was never really comfortable with the Dual-Watch thing. It's a nice inexpensive radios but I got the feeling that some of the software engineering wasn't totally thought out. Nevertheless, I really like these radios. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WDlkpIPy4i4.html
Hi. I have Baofeng uv-82 . I need to configure to be able to talk with my friends while we hunting. All of us has different type of radios,Mostly has Motorola walkie-talkie,where you van select channels and select code to specific channels. I need to configure my Baofeng uv-82 to be able to do same ,select channel and attribute specific code.I figured how to add channels with chirp but how to add all codes?I need just to be able to flip between FRS_GMRS channels and codes.
As the UV-82 doesn't have an "external code selector", trying to select various codes for a single frequency is going to be tough. You basically can add one code to one frequency in a single channel. You'd have to go into the manual programming mode from the front panel to alter the code selection in the field. The UV-82 has no mechanical switch provision to switch CTCSS/DTS codes without reverting to the manual programming process on the front panel. If your friend are using frequencies and selecting various codes on those frequencies in the field, you could program something like this: Channel 1: Frequency 1 with code A Channel 2: Frequency 1 with code B Channel 3: Frequency 1 with code C Channel 4: Frequency 2 with code A Channel 5: Frequency 2 with code B Channel 6: Frequency 2 with code C Then you flip through the channels to access various codes. To attempt this with ALL the GMRS and FRS frequencies and codes would be pretty impractical. If the number of frequencies your friends use are somewhat limited, this would probably work however if they're just calling out frequencies and codes somewhat randomly to avoid other user's radio traffic in the hunting area they you're going to have to learn how to set the codes from the front panel programming procedure. I'm assuming that you would be changing channels and codes in a "in-the-field condition". I'd Chirp program all the FRS and GMRS frequencies and then make the Code Selection via Manual Programming in the field. Changing the codes manually is really not that difficult. Are you familiar with the manual programming process ??
If you're using the UV 82 only as a scanner it would be possible. The downside: if you don't program the receive TONE or DCS you have to possibility of hearing services other than the one you're interested in on shared channels. If you're scanning emergency channels and you don't set the DUPLEX to OFF, you have the possibility of transmitting on top of those channels which might impair communications to first responders and whatever liability that might present..
+Budda Spear You stumped me this time. I knew that it was possible to scan for CTCSS Frequencies with the UV-82 but never took the time to figure it out. SO......., I did the following google search for SEARCHING FOR CTCSS TONES ON THE BAOFENG UV82 and the following video popped up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_JiLDVnqVeE.html Watch the video until you understand it and then the following applies 1. Realize that you're scanning for the frequency in the VFO mode. 2. Once you get the CTCSS frequency from the scan, you have to write it down and then apply it to your UV-82 channel information in the Chirp software for the Channel Information. Let me know how it works - Ed/Central California
I just got a Baofeng UV-82. I can't get it to download to the chirp software. It says "An error has occured could not open port COM7; [error 2] The system cannot find the file specified" I have your video and the chirp software on splitscreen so I can follow directions. What do I need to do? Anyone's help will be appreciated.
+Sandflat Sandflat A couple of stupid questions; 1. You have the radio turned on and the interface USB cable plugged between the radio and a computer USB jack Correct...? Make sure the double plug is all the way into the radio. Now a better question: If you go to your device manager, do you see a Serial Converter on one of the USB ports?
+The Erod1944 Channel Yes radio is turned on,and cable plugged in between radio and computer. Double checked plugs. I go to device manager, Ports (COM & LPT) drops down with a yellow error flag on Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM7)
I am using a FDTI cable which performed flawless with Windows 8.1 and 10. The Prolific converter requires some driver work to perform correctly. I knew that before I purchased a cable and avoided the Prolific Cable. Here's some information concerning drivers from miklor.com. My suspicion is that you have a driver issue. www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
+The Erod1944 Channel Finaly, finaly, finaly, I got everything hooked up and working. I still have a few things to figure out with some of my frequencies, narrow or wideband, tone squelch or not. A friend in the FD is getting me a new updated list, this should help. I wish the names would scroll with the frequencies though. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I progress. thanks for your time and help.
+Sandflat Sandflat Glad to hear you got it working. Here's a couple of helpful items. 1 - The FCC mandated Narrowbanding in nearly all services so you should find that setting a channel for NFM should work OK 2. There's a CTCSS/DCS scanning function on the UV-82 that will allow you to determine the tone on any channel. Here's a video that tells you how. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_JiLDVnqVeE.html
+The Erod1944 Channel Yeah no problem! I put the squelch at increments of 8 up to lvl 64. Any higher and it is very hard to open up. Btw, it was a very helpful video, thanks! 73! KK6JNV
Hey just another quick question, Is there any way to program PL tones on chirp, but be able to change them while using the radio in channel mode? I try to change the tone but it wont hold...
+Budda Spear Have you tried going to this page? trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ Click the Green; chirp-daily installer.exe You should see an exe file loading in the lower left part of your screen When done, hit the little down arrow on the lower left part of your screen and click OPEN. The file will begin to run. Your computer might start to ask if you want to allow the installation.exe file to add the program onto your file. You will have to allow the program access so answer YES. You should then see a large box which will show progress on extracting and installing the file. When its done, go look at your files via the start button and you should see a new file indication showing that chirp has been installed. I hope that makes sense. I just installed it on my desktop and it was flawless.
+The Erod1944 Channel Thanks, I have it all programmed now and using as scanner in first 10 channels. It will stop at a channel, the green light goes on, but can't hear anything?
If you're getting a green light that means you're receiving a carrier on your receive frequency. So far so good. It sounds as if you have a CTCSS or DCS problem. CTCSS is a low controlling audio tone transmitted with the incoming signal along with the normal speech audio. There is an audio switch in your radio that waits for an incoming CTCSS signal which tells the switch to open up and release the audio from your UV-82 into your speaker so you can hear it. There are 38 or so CTCSS tones. Your receive CTCSS switch/detector is programmed for a specific one of the 38 tones, The transmitter of the distant radio and your receive radio must be set identically to function. EXAMPLE - waiting for 107.2 Hz CTCSS. The distant station transmits a sub tone of 107.2 and your radio opens audio on 107.2 Hz. Reviewing my UV-82/Scanner video from Location 06:00 to 06:45 should help. Both your radio and the distant radio must be programmed identically as far as FREQUENCY, TSQL, TONE & TONESQL are concerned. TWO TESTS 1 - If you're getting a Green Light, you can listen for audio as a test regardless of your CTCSS settings by depressing the M BUTTON until you hear something. If you hear speech audio only when the M BUTTON is depressed, you have a CTCSS or DCS problem. DCS is the same as CTCSS except it transmits a code, one of many, rather than a audio sub-tone also one of many. 2 - If you are NOT using CTCSS or DCS and this is possible, you can remove that requirement by the following programming in the SETTINGS PAGE. You would set TSQL for NONE and that will remove the CTCSS or DCS requirement. If you do that you can ignore selecting the specific CTCSS FREQUENCIES or DCS CODES. Lets see how far you get. Let me know.
Yes. Even though I live in a sort of rural area, all the frequencies required to meet my scanning meeds have been located on Radio Reference. I picked them all up manually however, I'm building up nerve to do the download thing in order to pick up some of the P25 systems in my area. I had to determine some of the CTCSS tones and DCS tones using the scanner as it some cases they weren't included on Radio Reference.
+The Erod1944 Channel thank you, I do too I'm a volunteer firefighter instead of me spending $400 I can buy this and put my whole parish paging and I can hear everything, right?
theman54 22 My F.D. has a single repeater on a 4000 ft mountain top which feeds the entire system. I hear everything including the morning check-in report, burning permissiveness, fire conditions, the actual fire calls etc etc. However, I'm listening to 1 repeater on 1 frequency with 1 CTCSS tone which is pretty easy. If your F.D. has multiple frequencies/repeaters it could be problematic. If they're on a Trunking system then just forget it. I would determine what the system is composed of before deciding what to do.....
Since I reinstalled the driver today I see reference to a ftdiport.inf. Here's some of the references that came from -- USB Serial Port (COM3) properties under events. Device FTDIBUS\VID_0403+PID_6001+A402PXS4A\0000 was configured. Lordbrega If you're referring to High vs Low POWER MODE, there was actually no reason to even change the mode as the radio was restricted from transmitting. I think it was just a paranoid moment in that I REALLY don't want to transmit on the Fire Channels by mistake. I was programming the radios in real time and I think I just added a bit of confusion to the video. If that doesn't answer your question, hit me again. Thanks Ed
Every channel you place into the radios memory. The down side is; the radio scan is really slow so if you have a ton of channels in your program, it's going to take a long time for the radio to go through the list. It's much-much slower than a Bearcat Scanner for example. SECOND ANSWER: I'm saying this because I don't know what your skill level is on these things - You're only going to HEAR one channel at at time - but then, you probably knew that......
GMRS is not legal for transmitting on this radio. The radio does not meet FCC Part 95 certification. If you want to do GMRS transmissions, then get the AnyTone TERMN-8R as GMRS, MURS and FRS is already built into the firmware and the radio is certified by the FCC for both Part 90 and Part 95.
Really wish you’d spend the time to learn about each feature before doing these videos. Saying “ I dunno what this is and I don’t care” is pretty unprofessional.
