Excellent video providing excellent information. I am a general class ham operator and I have a Baofeng BF-F9V2+ with an extra battery that I have programmed with Chirp similarly like you describe. It is my SHTF radio only as I have other HTs for everyday use. I see some of the previous comments made by others who apparently have not done their homework. I hope they learned something along the way to set them straight. Thanks for the timeless information and 73!

The Baofeng radios are great because they cover a massive band width, however there are a few somewhat common radio systems that the radio would not accommodate. Those are: 1. Trunked systems - require special radios and a fair bit of knowledge and expertise to actually program 2. Encrypted systems - basically no way to get access to these unless you know the access key, but they may be illegal to listen to in the first place (depending on who the frequency is used by) 3. Digital systems - once again require specialized radios and a fair bit of expertise to program (not to mention trunked digital systems) 4. 800MHz band sometimes used by public safety

Having been a ham for 50 years and involved with SAR for the last 35 years, contact your county's DEM (department of emergency Management) and get involved. A ham ticket is not required but helpful. We use Law enforcement, Fire, Military, CAP, Air to Ground, Coast Guard and many different SAR Frequency's on our missions. Pass a 35 question test and you have the Ham ticket, If 8 and 9 year old kids can pass the test you can too. NE7NE

Thanks for the time in making the video. The FRS channels are for the public, and are channels 1-14 in the "bubble pack radios". Channels 15-22 are for "licensed GMRS" use only, with channels 22-30 being used for GMRS REPEATERS. You do need to have a call sign issued by the FCC for GMRS use, and use (announce) your call sign at the beginning and end of conversations. There are "14" channels in the bubble pack radios that are free to use. I hope that non-licensed users stick to these channels (1-14), as I have paid the $80 FCC fee so that I can use a higher wattage radio output to communicate with my family. With 1-14, there is plenty of channels to choose from to communicate on for those who do not want to pay the FCC fee.....With that being said, would you please give a link to the website that you found a "quick manual programming guide for the UV-5r"? I do believe that people should have multiple frequencies listed in their radios for the simple fact that in a SHTF scenario (and there will be one, soon) we need to stay informed, even if it is just thru monitoring information that is being put out there. Someone posted this video and I just watched. It was very helpful. I have tried for 2 years to study for HAM radio license. I loose interest due to some of the “technical” information you have to know. This was very helpful.

Speaking to emergency use. Back in the 70s-80s-90s-2000s, it is was SOP that on cb channel 9 is for emergency only. The line of thinking was that if you have an an emergency to go to channel 9. The problem with that is, nobody is listening. People avoid it due to it being set aside for emergencies. So, it rolls like this, you have an emergency, you go to channel 9 and call for help........ crickets. Good luck getting help. Up until the mid 90s I had a base station set up. I used to monitor channel 9. I helped many people many times and at least 2 of those times was over skip. When I was running heavy wrecker (like you see on rescue 401) and we had numerous heavys working a wreck, we used channel 9. One heavy operator said to me "isn't channel 9 for emergencies?". My response was , we got a tractor trailer across the highway, another on the shoulder on its side and another torn apart 500 feet up the highway. If this isn't an emergency I don't know what the hell is. So, think of the context of an emergency. It doesn't necessarily have to be a fire or medical emergency, etc. My base station was a modified TRC 458. It a had slider and a lot of "extra" channels. I only ever had FCC come to my door once. It was because someone was jealous of my set up. FCC never seen my set up, because I didn't open the door. When they returned, I had a completely different rig set up. Don't get all worried about using certain frequencies. Just don't misuse them and talk professional when using them and you're not going to have a problem. It's when you get stupid that draws attention to yourself.

I may be here in such short time before SHTF to learn the Baofeng, but I'm prepped on the other stuff!

for Baofengs, you can use CHiRP software to program all these stations in. Then set DTMF to "off" and those channels will be receive-only. I recommend doing this and then putting on a card how to enable DTMF so you can transmit. Today and tomorrow and perhaps the rest of your life, it's not legal. When SHTF, we will be operating under a different context. Also, set your default power to LOW. Finally, I highly recommend getting your amateur ham radio license. You can pick up a book on Amazon. I find it pretty darn interesting and am looking forward to getting my license. - Camilo

I have had many requests for me to send people what frequencies I use in my radios. While I have nothing to hide unless you live or travel in my area (city and state) what frequencies I use will not work for your radios. What you program in your radios compared to mine could be different by just miles. You could be 50 miles away from me and a frequency I use would not work for you. You need to program your radio with frequencies that are relevant to you and where you live and travel.

Why would you hand over your radio because an officer ask to see it? Needs a search warrant...this is info from a retired LEO!

I use a uniden bc246t analog trunked scanner that has been pre programed by uniden for communication monitoring, works great.

To answer your question, legally an emergency [in terms of transmitting on prohibited frequencies] would be defined as "a situation where life and/or property is at threatened and at stake" according to the FCC.

146.520, 446.000 MHz are the HAM emergency frequencies.

In the UK at least Marine radio requires a certified radio (so does GMRS and FRS) and a licence. You can only use M1 or M2 on land for club to sea communications. Marine emergency is Channel 16 in the UK if you are on the sea (in coastal waters) you WILL BE HEARD by the coast guard and they have repeaters all along the coast.

Hey, suggestion. You could, if you feel inclined, put all that info into a PDF or doc, and upload it on a file sharing platform like Mega or github. That way, people who are either unable to find the information you gathered, or are very busy, could download your document and print it out easily. Also, like many others, I'm lazy. lol Just an idea. Thank you for the information it was very useful.

Back in 2014 I got my very 1st scanner, a uniden bc125at. I was able to monitor local police, FD, AMR, ham, etc. Recently dug it out this year. But I found out local police went full encryption in 2016. All those channels are now a ghost town. I even got a slim jim antenna back then and was able to pull in Los Angeles sheriff, 60 miles away. Not anymore though. I still use it to listen to ham convo.

Love the video, the easiest way to deal with "legality" is this "The only place this radio is legal to use is on the ham bands, because they don't require type acceptance of the radio" every other radio service requires "type acceptance" IE: the radio is FCC approved for that service. now having said that, in an emergency where life and property are at risk all rules go out the window. In other words transmit where you must ;-)

Does it matter if it’s an emergency situation on watts or antennas? Like hurricanes tornadoes bad accidents? Or the need for first responders if telecommunications aren’t available?

Just a few suggestions to your nicely done video.... If your interested in monitoring emergency services, I’d suggest a scanner radio. They have a lot more frequency range and some can store a thousand plus channels. If your looking for an emergency radio to transmit to other stations in case of a REAL emergency your suggestions are pretty much on key. I would loose the 10 codes, the phonetic alphabet, and the Morse code is going to be totally useless to you even with your chart.. Even at 5 WPM which is considered slow, your ears will not pick it up fast enough to even write it down. Amateur radio repeaters are definitely a good bet, as well as GMRS and local municipalities such as fire and police... But remember as you stated, some of this has gone trunked or digital. As for Amateur and GMRS repeaters, in fact almost any type repeater usually has a PL code ( Private Line) or DPL code (Digital Private Line) that you must use to access the repeater. 1A- 103.5 4Z- 136.5 6B- 179.9 etc, etc. So write these down as well next to your local repeater frequency. Also don’t forget the repeater offset, +\- and the amount of offset used... Example Happy Ham Amateur Radio Club 146.550 Offset (-) PL- 4Z. Now the common offset for 2 meter Amateur Radio repeaters is 600 kHz. plus or minus,,, other bands and other services may be different... If ANY of this is not programmed correctly.... Your going to report your emergency to NOBODY! I’m sure there are some here who are crying “ Your NOT licensed to be on these frequencies! ! ! But in a life or death situation,,,, If it’s going to make the difference USE IT! I’m sure the FCC is not going to beat you up and steal all of your marbles for saving a life...

I usually program a channel I can legally use in case I grab the radio and transmit my callsign, if you cannot turn off transmitting.

So, 1) Be aware of what can and can't be done legally as stated by the FCC rules (or the governing agencies in your country). What you do with that information is up to you. 2) The Coast Guard monitor the marine frequencies, and they have police powers 3) Do not program the transmit frequency (i.e. leave the TX FREQ blank) if you do not intend to transmit on that frequency. Not only does it help to eliminate the accidental transmission, but it also will help you if the radio is confiscated and the code plug is checked. If you make it so it shows you had no intention of transmitting on that frequency, it may save you in a lot of hassle.

Evening! I just found your channel and love the videos! I'm a newly licensed ham with a Yaesu FT-65 with a Diamond replacement antenna. I have found absolutely no activity on it whatsoever. I realize that this is a line-of-sight radio but I have been asking myself "What good is it?" Lol. I guess I could always use the empty air to talk to my Schnauzer but she can't key the mic. I have entered repeater freqs and still nothing..... kind of disappointing. Any guidance?

Dump the original rubber ducky antenna! Has "less than unity gain", buy a flexible compatible SMA based dual band antenna that has some gain for better reception/transmitting and is meant for the Baofeng/Pofung radio (same radio - slightly different look). Be sure to obtain the proper licenses to operate the frequencies you wish to operate on. Ham Operators are very sensitive to unlicensed operation and will track you down and report you to the FCC. The Ham license for this radio is easy to get, a simple 25 question test and you have the license for ten years. The camaraderie between ham operators is great, and fun too. If you do not want to go to the trouble of programming these radios and obtaining the proper licenses, buy a CB and join the unruly lot you find there. Some CBer's are good people, most are not. CB is not anything I would have my kids listen to. Choice is yours.

The problem with "Ten Codes" is they vary greatly by area and jurisdiction. The fire services are required to use "Clear Text" and not the ten codes on all mutual aid incidents. Very few fire departments in the western U.S. use anything but clear text, internally or for mutual aid. The fire departments in the east hold tightly to tradition, some of them using expressions in existence before the invention of telephones and radios.

An emergency would be any situation that occurs which jeopardizes human life and/or property, and the summoning of assistance is essential. No need to split hairs here. If you can articulate the circumstance to the above, it would qualify for transmitting without a license. Even if the situation had the strong potential for harm, but not necessarily imminent, IMO the FCC and the courts would rule the transmission was OK. After all, we're discussing talking on a radio to summon help during a critical event, not bank robbery. Sometimes I think people over analyze this issue.

I know here in the uk we can’t listen to the police as they are on Motorola MT800 on a private TEA2 Network, so cant listen to the emergency services, I wanna buy these, I’m also getting a license but can you use these without one like listen to them? most large agencies and law enforcement are now using 800mhz, trunking systems, so not too many uhf, vhf agencies out there unless they are small agencies. You are correct however, in the old days vhf, uhf were king for fire/police. Thats why you can't even monitor local agencies anymore unless you have an 800mhz trunking scanner

I wouldn´t disable the transmission function on emergency channels or any other channel for that matter! As long as you don´t transmit, you´re allowed to own and use the radio, no matter how it´s set up. Imagine being in an emergency situation desperately looking for help. You´re close to the water and could easily use the Marine emergency channel, if you only hadn´t disabled the transmission function! A nightmare! This goes for any other frequency, if you really need it, you´ll gladly use it!

This is all so confusing. I am brand brand new to these radios. I have downloaded chirp, but everywhere is telling me different channels to program. And, except for weather, I have yet to be able to hear anything. Maybe I need to find a "radio for complete dummies" video, lol. The ones you need to be licensed for are ham radio and Gmrs you don't need a license for Cb and frs.

You hit many great topics. In your book in would suggest dcs and ctcss tones. In city emergencies you will find CERT(www.ready.gov/community-emergency-response-team) members on channel one in frs. Too bad many police departments and other emergency services are going to a digital trucnked system, some even need a password. So this Analog UV-5R is useless.

Well, trying to monitor Emergency services frequencies is nearly impossible with a Baofeng/analog radio. Where I live those have all gone to digital trunked systems, which you cannot listen to with a Baofeng. I wont get into the FRS/GMRS argument, but just dont, buy a FRS radio, and if you want GMRS, pay for the license then get a radio. Stay legal people. It's easier and safer. Also you learn how to use the radio's. Where I live, we as Ham Radio operators do not use the 10 codes.
