Hello Dave, I used the info in this video and was able to program my Luiton LT-898UV with the Chirp software. It is helping me to utilize this strange little menu driven radio with no knobs and buttons that I am used to. I was able to utilize my old recycled Dell OptiPlex 785 with Windows 7. It went off with almost no problems, except my old analog brain. I will be passing this video on to others. Thanks so much. KC3BXZ Joe

This is the most how-to guide to Chirp, I´ve seen a lot of them in the last few days! Thanks David!! One question: can you set up a spreadsheet beforehand (without the radio plugged in), save it as an img.file and import it to the radio later on? I really want to take my time with this and do it in multiple steps.
@scooterjes

Chirp will let you have multiple tabs open at once so you can copy and paste the contents/items from 1 radio into another. A quick tip when you download the repeater list put it in a separate tab and use the copy/paste function to move it over so you don't accidentally overwrite the memories in you radio. It also has a few premade requency list for like the NOAA Weather, National calling frequencies ect.

For those of you who are having chronic problems getting your FT-60 (maybe any radio, I don't know) to work with Chirp: With the programming cable plugged into a USB port: Go into your computer's device manger and double click on the Prolific (or whatever device your programming cable has) device. Go to the Power Management tab and turn off "allow computer to turn off this device to save power..." This solved my problem and now I can consistently upload from Chirp to my FT-60. 73

It can only operate on one "codeplug" at a time. Saving a codeplug intended for your radio will enable you to upload it again later, provided you "save as new" before editing. In this manner you can have several different environments at your disposal within a few minutes of reuploading a different codeplug.

My issue is that Chirp will not allow me to populate ToneSql, DTCS Code, DTCS Pol, Cross Mode, Duplex, fields in chirp. I am not sure if the lack of data is the cause of my performance issue. (haven't been able to recieve anything). I see the fields populated in your example of chirp, I assume I should also be able to populate the data but I cant. I can get the drop down, select a value, but cant get the program to retain / save the data. Any ideas. Thanks Art.

Dave, HELP - I purchased some Baofengs for our family vehicles in case of emergencies but when I try to dial in the NOAA weather reporting the radios say "Cancel" as I dial in the last digit. I read on the internet that CHIRP can be used to reset the lower and upper frequency range for VHF and UHF that can't be done thru the radio key menu on the handhelds. So I have myself a cable that works, I think, it was still in the plastic. WIN 10 recognizes it as Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (Com 3). Then, following instructions, I Turned off the radio. Held Down the 3 key and turned on the radio. The number is BFB298. Chirp says I'm only good to 296. The radio is a weirdo. It is labeled UV-5R (Baofeng) but it is an 8 watt version. Not labeled anything else but UV-5R anywhere including under the battery which is a double-sized battery and adds height to the unit -- fitting nicely on the back AND underneath the radio which makes it taller than the usual UV-5R. I have a regular old UV-5R too and I think its possible this cable came with that one which I have had for 4-5 years. I've had this 8 watt version for at least a year, and since then BAOFENG has come out with several 8 watt H-T's but NONE of them numbered UV-5R. So I have this feeling I am stuck between a rock and a hard place until I figure out how to deal with being-off-by-3-numbers. I can't remember if its a firmware thing or driver number or what, I just followed Mr. M's page (Miklor.com) until I got to this "snag." Any info you can shed on this predicament greatly appreciated. Afraid to move forward until I understand why my BFB298 is three numbers too high and what that means. Thanks, 73 Dave N9DMS Naperville, IL

You ought to do something like the old Saturday morning TV show, Watch Mr. Wizard, where you have someone who is new the amateur radio and talk them through the process and maybe do tests and experiments. I bet you'd find areas where you think it's a logical step but would confuse someone new. Pros are a little blind to how a newbie thinks and that's why I think going the Mr. Wizard route would work great. Not that your video isn't already very good. I used to sell cameras and over time I found that I was talking over their heads so I made the effort to slow down and explain step by step what I was talking about and why a feature would benefit them or not..

You might try doing a factory reset or else making sure the firmware is up to date.

Double check in chirp. There are quite a number of standard lists that you can import.

Hello, S=Dave. Thank you for the useful information. My name is Chris and I live in Drama Greece. I have a Baofeng UV9Rplus. There is a question I'd like to ask. Can you tell me please what am I doing wrong when the upload to radio button in Chirp is inactive, while I have data on my list to be uploaded? Thank you.
@davecasler
@davecasler 4 года назад
It sounds like a driver problem. If you can download you should be able to upload.

Thanks, dear David, for dealing with my problem. Let me be more specific. When I create my own list from scratch, I can upload it to the radio. I can't upload ready lists, if that helps you. I don't believe it's a driver problem.

I'm having a issue with port forwarding. I keep getting a could not open port COM4: [Error 5] Access Denied. Any suggestions. I'm using chirp and also running. Driver 3.2.0.0 for the cable.

If access is denied, it could mean it's already in use by some other process.

HELLO DAVE, I AM HAVING MAJOR ISSUES WITH DOWNLOADING FROM MY GT-5TP RADIO USING THE CHIRP SOFTWARE, THE UV 82HP DISPLAYS A ERROR POP UP. STATING THAT THE RADIO IS NOT RESPONDING. CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM? MY APOLOGIES FOR THE CAPS.

Try turning the radio's audio to about halfway up. Make sure the radio end of the cable is plugged all the way in.

So, I uploaded from CHIRP and now my Baofeng F8HP doesn't work. Not even the MENU key. Have you experienced that?

Read the website for Chirp. I have a Baofeng UV-3R Plus. Under the baofeng radios. I dont see the UV-3R Plus listed under Baofeng devices. Just want to confirm or if anyone can confirm or validate if CHIRP doess NOT work or talk to the baofeng UV-3R Plus? if that is the case. is there an application for programming the Baofeng UV-3R Plus. that works like CHIRP? Thanks!
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 лет назад
Hmm...the Baofeng website actually encourages people to use Chirp. Have you tried the UV-3R profile to see if it's compatible with the UV-3R+?

Try putting in a transmit frequency that's right at the edge of a ham band, say 144.000. As I recall, each channel has to have a transmit frequency, even the ones you just listen to, like the wx radio.

I'm programming a baofeng to work with garmins. I'm wondering how to set up privacy codes. I understand that you set this under the 'Tone' column. It looks slightly different in the Baofeng than Chirp. For Example on the Bao, you set RTCS and TTCS i believe to whatever privacy code you want. How do you perform this in chirp ? You put it in the tone column and then which tone mode do I set it to ?
@davecasler
@davecasler 4 года назад
This is a use outside of ham radio, so I can't comment with any certainty.
@rdyjur
@rdyjur 4 года назад
@@davecasler alright thanks i got it with some trial and error. You enter your main freq, then select TSQL for tone mode column, then enter privacy code under ToneSql column.

I bought A laptop for the sole purpose of programming my Yaesu FT 65R. When I attempt to download the radio information on the laptop I get an error message “could not open port [error 3] the system cannot find the path specified”. Very disappointing and I have no idea why it’s happening.

Hi Dave , every time i change the frequency in location 2 to match my Midland radios when i go to upload to radio its jumps back to the default frequency , how do i save the changes ? Thanks
@davecasler

I'm not really sure. Try saving your file to the disk before you try to upload it back to the radio. That might help. Good luck summation point

I just bought two Luiton LT-458 and can't find any help on how to program these. I have ZERO experience, this is my first radio set. I managed to download CHIRPS on my MacBook (which was challenging enough) but I don't know where to go from here. Any help?

I'm not familiar with those radios. Chirp's website has instructions, but it assumes you know what all the values are all about. Your Tech license manual can help explain them.

For the non-memory settings, probably you're okay going with the defaults.

Where do you get the original info for channels in your area if you don't have a radio with it already in it tocopy
@davecasler
@davecasler 6 лет назад
Check the ARRL Repeater Directory ($$) or just Google for repeaters in your area. Be aware that lots of repeaters are there only on paper. Plug the frequencies into your radio, then let it scan. The active repeaters will show themselves pretty quickly.

repeaterbook.com is free to search and if you sign up for a free account, you can export frequencies right into CHIRP.
