I was raised in the deep south, so I knew about chitlins all my life, but didn't want to try them.A couple of years ago, a friend and I was at a County Fair in Tennessee and there was a black man selling Fried Chitlin sandwiches on a Hamburger bun. My friend ask me if I wanted to try some. I said "Aw what the heck" we both got us a Sandwich, it had mayonnaise, hot sauce and pickles on it. Talk about good!! Twenty minutes later, I am back in the line to get me another sandwich.....I was the only white boy in the line...LOL.. Will for sure try this recipe...Thank You so much, for posting this recipe!! : )
Frankallen12 lol. I love your story. I'm picturing you standing in line looking around like "yeah that's right, I'm back for a second helping...." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Chitlins' have that effect. 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
I thought white People didn’t eat chitlins since it was what their ancestors threw away or gave to their slaves. Those slave owners would turn in their graves if they knew their offsprings were eating slave food.
I'm twelve years old and love chitlins. I say chitlins because that is how my grandmother always says it when we're in the kitchen cooking them for a special occasion. I grew up with chitlins for a long time we infact have 2 10pound buckets in the kitchen now. everybody in the neighborhood lets her clean them because she knows how to get all that dirty stuff out of it and we don't use anything to get rid of the smell.. since we are used to eating them the smell doesn't bother us.:) And I think this was a great video !
alyris456 🧼 I would throw them in the washing machine with some bleach and wash in hot 💦 water that way you get all the 💩 poop out of them and cook them at the same time.👩🍳
My daughter ask me what those were when we were at the store today, I told I'll look it up on youtube and after seeing this video I'm gonna cook'em up this weekend and get back with you on it. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting this recipe! I used to stand in the kitchen with my grandmother and watch her turn a big bucket of chitterlings into a little bucket of chitterlings. She would take such care to really clean the chitterlings. I've never seen anyone prepare them as you do. I would only trust my grandma's "chitlins," but I am going to have give this a try!
I have always loved chitterlings. I was the designated chitterlings cleaner growing up. Yep and like tou do we always clean the factory cleaned ones too. I once had some that someone mad that the disnt reckean the factory cleaned ones. It grosed me out it was awful had corn like bits in it etc .thanks for this upload.it shows people that they can be made into a nice clean recipe.
Thanks much 4 that tip about the potatoes! I've gotten use to the smell but for the guests who come while I'm in the cleaning process will be very grateful!
I made mines like this, but I did green and red peppers and onions, and fresh jaleopeno pepper, OMG IT WAS A BIG HIT, EVEN WITH MY BROTHER WHO NEVER EVER EAT THEM THANK YOU THIS IS HOW I WILL BE DOING THEM FROM NOW ON. YEA
a friend of mine told me to pre boil them for about 15 minutes after washing them first . than drain n rinse . then cook them as the recipe you r using for them says. what are your thoughts on this . ty for reading this . hope to get a reply. ty so much 4 sharing ur recipe. cant wait to try these.
Those look DELICIOUS!!!! I only make them during the holiday because as you mentioned they are no longer inexpensive. They are a delicacy and are not for everyone, but don't let the smell put you off - give them a try. They're becoming one the lost foods in African American cuisine because the younger generation isn't exposed to them as much as we were growing up. Thanks for this contribution.
Loved this video! I don't even talk about enjoying chitterlings because I don't know anyone who likes this dish..I plan to make your recipe. Thank you for representing for the old skool..
thank you I make greens and corn bread also butter beans and my son in law loves them now he wants me to make chitterlings cause he loves them so thanks to you this 6'2" 350 pounder will get his chitterlings
I love chitterlings I needed a easy recipe just for me. I am the only one that eats them in my family. I was glad to know that I could use the same recipe in the slow cooker.
Thank you Rosie! I'm late commenting but I used this recipe for my family's potluck Thanksgiving last year and everyone LOVED it. I didn't have any chitlins left in my pot. Thank you!!!
So I never thought about using utility scissors to cut my Chitterlings during prep! This has made a daunting process such much better. Can't wait to try your recipe! yummmm
My mom passed last year so this year I will attempt to cook chitterlings (chitlins) for the first time. Appreciate the cleaning instructions. Your recipe looks good. My mom never put a lot of colorful seasoning in her chitterlings. She just used a little salt white pepper and a couple of red hot peppers from her herb garden. I think I'm gonna stick with that. I will use the potato and vinegar as I clean.
I've always heard about this recipe and have always been grossed out by the thought of eating them but you made them look so clean that I don't feel as bad about maybe trying them one day!!!!
ooooweeeee! I haven't had these in years. My husband and myself used to eat these for christmas and thanksgiving, when our boys were babies. now, they are grown and gone, and me and hubby by ourselves, we haven't eaten these in SEVERAL years. Yours show looks yummy. And you are right, I bet they are quite expensive now, they used to be $6.99 a bucket. Now I imagine they are just as much as a turkey.
I so love your methods on cooking and I certainly love chitlings😋! I have 4 ole school buckets that I'm gonna start preparing tomorrow morning and I definitely will follow your recipe. Thank you!
That looks so good I want some right now. I have to have the recipe for your potato salad my mother always used to eat potato salad with hers as well.I have not eaten these in years... But I want and crave them now!
I'm a biologist last time I checked the books. Food is not a race thing It's meat. Yes there are some foods that are unique to a culture of people. We are all Homo sapiens We all have a mouth. You eat what you want to eat.
I don't care what anyone says...that looks really GOOD. I love spicy food, grew up on Tabasco on everything, LOL, so I'd probably really like spicy chitlins. My mother's family is African-American and my grandmother would sometimes make chitlins, but unfortunately, I never got to try them. I'm heading to Sylvia's in Harlem for an upcoming trip and this is what I'm getting for dinner--can't wait!
Your chitterlings look absolutely divine! I'm definitely going to try your recipe for New Years! Thanks so much for posting your recipe, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!
great recipe....i'll have to tell my mom about the green peppers and broth. i know you say you don't cook the potatoes but i knew a couple of southern women from my town chunk it up and actually cook it in the chitterlings for a few minutes to get that smell out and one of em used bay leaves....i like this recipe, thanks!
This video might actually get me to clean and cook some chitlins soon... I've eaten them in the past when my mother has cooked them; she doesn't clean/cook 'em anymore, but she would like to have some. I think I will surprise her and do it! I can't put 'em directly in the sink though...will use a big glass bowl for sure... Thanks!!!
Thank you for posting this recipe. I haven't cooked chitlin's in years. Lol, I forgot how, and wanted to cook some with potato salad for my family. My husband said his mother use to fry them :0
Ok going to tell the truth. I absolutely hate chitlings. Even though I have never had one (up til now)..I cant stand the idea of it. One Xmas I had one in my mouth for five minutes but didn't/couldn't chew..ewww..my honey However loves them. I refuse to serve anyone anything I haven't taste tested (hence my issue). I sucked it up because quality control is everything (and I have a reputation to uphold)..lol.. I'm gonna tell you this one time and don't gloat lol. well maybe just a little lol. These things were YUMMY..yup you heard me YUMMY..I used only stock no water and added powdered stock (ham flavored) lots of fresh garlic. Lots of onion powder and garlic powder.. DELICIOUS...now I'm telling you in advance I'm not telling my honey where I got this recipe...all he needs to know is I get down in this kitchen..you have a new fan. BTW I'M NOT EATING ANOTHER...lol
YAY!!! I'm glad you liked the ONE chitterling that you ate.. LOLOL!!! You Rock!!! Don't worry.. Your secret it safe with me! As far as he knows you came up with this recipe ;-) . XOXOXXO
I love chitterlings, i always cook them jan 1. I breve add all these ingredients thou i will this yr......thanks your videos hlp me soo much...... I cooked all my Thanksgiving mall from your videos......YOUR AWESOME!!!!
Oh my! Those chitlin's looked delicious! I, put the same thing in mine, except I add a good amount of fresh garlic, dry thyme and a bay leaf. I cook those taters right along with, in the crockpot, there is no need to add liquid cause they, will make their, own! I, can just taste them now! Keep cooking that old school food! So good!
Looks good don't eat them (have tried) but if I ever want to try them again, you would have to make them for me. This is about the cleanest I have ever seen chitterlings look.
Woo girlfriend those chitterlings look good! Fresh too. Only thing now I don't eat em' anymore. Last time I ate em' they tasted just like what they are...ya know what I mean. Lol At first they tasted good then at the end they bit me..Now I'm grossed out! I vowed never to buy them again. And when I eat ham I break out. I wonder if Campbells cream of chicken soup would make chitterlings taste better. Naa I can't eat em. Peace
Ok girl you got me wanting to cook chitterlings for my husband this coming New Years Day! Usually that's his thing, but a couple of years ago I volunteered to clean the "pre-cleaned" chitterlings for him and It took me a three hours to do it, He then cooked them. So I figured if I take the time to clean them, I may as well go all the way! :-) I'm going to try the potato in the water trick when cleaning them this time, and try your method. I believe my husband using the onion, bell pepper, red pepper flakes, and the garlic. But he also chops up celery. I really want to try the stock and water method, but I may try vegetable stock instead of chicken. Love the video and glad I subscribed!
I meant to let you know those chitterlings turned out fantastic! I normally leave them for my husband and mother in law to enjoy, but i was hanging tough with them in eating those yummies this year! :-)
This is an old video but I agree with your husband.-I use purple onion.I don't like to add a lot of things but when they're almost done-I add onion soup mix-Side note since the Chitterlings are precleaned I cook a pack or two of Hogmaws a day ahead to add some of the flavor back to the precleaned Chitterlings-Then simmer with soup mix.-Delicious!
I love you Rosie! You make recipes so simple and easy to follow, and thanks to you I now know how to really make some dressing!!! I can't wait for Thanksgiving 2013 because I will be making that dressing again. Blessings, Ms.Chicago63
Hello, I am attempting to cook.chittlins today: ). I'm glad I came across this video, nd my mom was asking is there anyway to eliminate the smell lol, Now I know a learned a tip that will help a little thanks. Also , do you pull back the lining of the chittlins bc a lot of ppl say that it's necessary. Do you clean the chittlins once more after they've soaked for a couple hours, or is that soaking enough?
