Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine have been all over the news lately, today I'm diving into quinine, the gin & tonic, the history of malaria treatment, and media criticism. Oh boy.
What exactly does a drinking channel have to do with the current news surrounding Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine? Well they're both quinine derivatives, and quinine is the active component in "Tonic Water", it's what makes turns club soda into tonic basically, AND quinine (and it's derivatives) are anti-malaria medicines, and so was tonic water, and actually the Gin & Tonic. That was a hell of a run on. Quinine is refined from the bark of the Cinchona tree (also known as the Quina Quina tree) and it's been used medicinally for centuries. Quinine's use as an anti-malaria medication was first discovered in the 1700's by a Scottish Dr. called George Cleghorn and was swiftly prescribed to British soldiers stationed in India to prevent and treat malaria. They hated the way quinine powder tasted, it's insanely bitter, disgusting really. So when they could they'd mix up a tonic by putting their quinine powder into soda with a little sugar. Thus tonic water. They quickly figured out that they could really improve on the tonic by adding some lime and gin, and the Gin & Tonic was born. Probably the only alcoholic beverage that has every actually been a useful medicine. I'm making the G&T two ways here, because I really like Tomr's Tonic syrup, but using that requires a really weird ratio that won't help anyone not using it. The important thing to note about the G&T is that it's not a highball, it should be roughly 50/50 Gin and Tonic. Too much tonic makes it awful.
Tomr's G&T
1 oz. or 30 ml. Tomr's Tonic Syrup
2 oz. or 60 ml. London Dry Gin
3 oz. or 90 ml. club soda
Build over ice and stir gently
Garnish with a lime wedge
G&T
1 part London Dry Gin
1 Part Tonic Water (more or less to taste)
Squeeze some lime in
Build over ice
The other thing I'm talking about in this episode is Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine and my objections to the media coverage of this particular topic. To clarify, up until very recently there was only one study of the use of chloroquine in Covid-19 patients, conducted by a French doctor named Didier Raoult who's integrity is a bit questionable. The study had 20 participants. It had no control group. You will not find this mentioned in most of the articles and coverage surrounding this drug.
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:

Media criticism isn't your usual thing, but this was the clearest, most approachable takedown of the chloroquine hype I've seen so far, and that includes major media. I think the occasional "here's what's going on with this media hype around something tangentially related to cocktails" (coupled with your usual charming cocktail description/review/history lesson) would be a very welcome addition to the RU-vid drink-o-sphere.

@DankNDoughnuts Okay, so you're claiming that he's part of the Deep State, even though Trump and co. brought him aboard the pandemic team. Your premise is that he is part of a group intending to overthrow the government by...what exactly? Is it based on his predictions of casualties? The ones he adjusted based on current social distancing guidelines? Is it that he's adamant about this type of medication, even though any doctor (hell, anyone who knows the scientific method) would vouch for continual testing and approval to avoid spiking those same casualties he adjusted? Do you, in all genuine curiosity, think that he is using this pandemic for personal enrichment, even though he has no ties to pharma reps, he has no current stock in any major supplies, and pushing for even further social distancing would hurt his economic future? The thing is, the premise of the Deep State is Schrodinger's Dumbassery. They are supposedly so powerful yet couldn't beat Donald fking Trump. Which is it? Are they incompetent or all powerful? Neither can exist together, and neither can your simpleton-endearing premises regarding this man as a member of it. Stop with the conspiracy theories. Wash your hands. Stay inside. Have a drink. It's clear as day you need one (or maybe to be cut off).

He forgot to mention G6PD deficiency and the fact quinine, tonic, chloroquine, ect are on the contraindication list for G6PD deficiency and can cause hemolytic anemia crisis and can exacerbate any infection you already have. For some reason eventhough it's the most common enzyme deficiency in the world it always gets left out. I've been puzzled by the medical professionals that have over looked the estimated 400 million people who have it and the fact that unless you've had a qualitative or quantitative test don't know it.

Over 3000 papers? That's ridiculous. The average hardworking professor or researcher publishes about 1 paper a year. If this were truly his own work, he would have done hundreds of lifetimes worth of work in 10 years. Numbers like those can only be gotten through fraud, and pay-to-publish, not peer reviewed journals (which is a HUGE problem in science now).

As a pharmacist, when I saw the title of your video, I was telling myself "uh-oh, what is he gonna say?". I was a bit afraid you would go with some of the misinformation that is currently spread around chloroquine and its effectiveness against COVID-19. But, I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see you did your research and found the correct information. AND, you also described pretty well why chloroquine might (emphasis on might) help against COVID-19 by reducing the inflammatory response (and perhaps in other ways, read the later comments, but beware the troll) So, hats off to you, you did your duty as a public persona and gave factual information instead of going with the "weasel words", as you say. Something that might interest some, there is a large study being done in Montreal where they aim to have around 6500 patients split in 2 groups (one placebo and one treatment) where they try colchicine, a treatment for gout, which is also an inflammatory disease. If things go well, we should have results in around 3 months as to if reducing the inflammatory response with that drug helps reducing death rates with COVID-19. Also, as Greg said, don't take medication without advice from your doctor and pharmacist, especially chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. Some people may be at risk of having severe arrhythmia with these medication and shouldn't therefore be taken lightly. And lastly, Hendricks made a gin with quinine already mixed with it, so you can double down on the quinine ;) I'm saying that as a joke, the amounts of quinine in the gin and in tonic in general is too low to have an actual effect on the human body..... but please, don't take this as a cue to drink huge amounts of gin & tonic.

chloroquine is an inophore that allows zinc and some antibiotics to enter the cell and prevent replicase of COVID rna. It is 100% critical to covid recovery and is not meant to be taken by itself as an "anti-inflammatory". This is non-negotiable and has been peer reviewed in medical journals. Contrary to what you and this bartender says there have been plenty of clinical trials on chloroquine, with positive and replicatable results, going back to at least 2012. This was published by Teipei Medical University in Japan as a great way to treat the SARS virus, which is what COVID-19 is derived from.

@@fluxcapacitor05 yes, it is known that chloroquine helps zinc "penetrate" cells and zinc is "potentially" an antiviral (still debated to this day). Don't take what you read somewhere for hard facts. More studies need to be done before we go to conclusions. And you say 100% critical to covid recovery... are you a doctor by any chance? As an avid fan of a gin and tonic, as well as being a medical professional who's currently helping treat patients in the midst of this, let me just say how much I genuinely appreciate the hard work that you actually put in to helping people understand verification of sources. I thoroughly appreciate the fact that you put the citations at the bottom. Love your Channel because I enjoy a good drink, and because I find you incredibly amusing because having watched every episode, you're the kind of person that I would love to have a drink with and be friends because my friends and I are gaming nerds who like to drink as well. What a great video! I’m also a provider treating covid 19 patients, and love your videos. I have to say, this one hits home hard with the amount of research you clearly put into the episode, putting forth some solid, accurate, and well explained medical information, while still keeping entertaining info regarding the gin and tonic (which I love). For everyone, please be careful with where you get your medical information. Hi Greg. Great video. I am a physician (ophthalmologist) and I must commend you on your thoughtful presentation about chloroquine and hydroxychloroqine. It's perfectly understandable why people would want these medications to help with Covid 19 but the science isn't there. My experience with these meds is monitoring people who taking them chronically for retinal toxicity. I would implore people not to take any medications unless prescribed to them by their physicians (as you state in your video). Sadly, there is a lot of misleading information out there - even coming from the White House briefing room. Please discuss your medical concerns with your physician. BTW the last syllable in chloroqine and hydroxychloroquine rhymes with win not wine (unlike quinine.)
@SolaScientia
@SolaScientia 2 года назад
I know I'm commenting on a very old comment, but I'm glad someone brought up retinal toxicity. My mother was on a medication for her sarcoidosis and she eventually had to be taken off that medication permanently because of issues with her eyes. She'd see weird halos around lights, especially at night, and all that. She's on different meds and autoimmune disease is mostly inactive/suppressed at this point, I believe.

"Lime is a crime!" That's what the tour guide told me in the taste room at the Beefeater Gin distillery in London. He said it clashes with the lemony botanicals used in the production of Beefeater. OK, I bought it--though my wife said later that lemons were probably cheaper!

Eh, it's up to personal taste for most. I drink quite a few gin and tonics; sometimes I like a bit of lime, sometimes not. I understand that in the UK lemon is used frequently, but I can't say that I recall trying it that way myself. It really depends on what gin I'm using, what tonic water I'm using, and what my mood is at the time. TL;DR version: Try both and see what you like.
