Professor Fink first describes the molecular structure of steroids, the sources of Cholesterol in our diet, and the mechanism of action of Lipitor (& other "statin" drugs). Following this, Professor Fink reviews the Androgens (including Testosterone & Adrenal Androgen; DHEA), Estrogen & Progesterone, the Mineralocorticosteroids (like Aldosterone), the Glucocorticosteroids (like Cortisol), and Cholecalciferol (Vit D).

I took physio in high school and anatomy last year in college and I’m about to take college physio this summer. I’m watching these videos to refresh my memory and get ahead since it’s a 6 week class. My goal is to get through all of them before my class starts next month Prof. Fink really is great!

Professor Fink. I normally do not comment on youtube videos but I had to say thank you for these amazing lectures. I already have a Masters in Pharmacy so watching these videos is revision and a refresher for me. In fact, I watch your lectures during my dinner time instead of TV. Thank you very much

Professor, Fink, you're just brilliant. I have watched hours of your lectures, and you are so informative. You can take a complex subject matter and break it down for easier understanding. THANK YOU!! Please keep them coming.

Regarding Cholesterol: while further research on the causes and mechanisms of atherosclerosis continue, there is still OVERWHELMING consensus that dietary intake of saturated fats & cholesterol IS a factor (genetics & other possible environmental factors not withstanding). You can refer to the AMA, MAYO CLINIC ("aim for no more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day") and AMERICAN HEART ASSOCN web-sites.

If the recommendation for cholesterol intake is 300 mg a day then that would mean a human can only consume 2 eggs a day? Incorrect. Yes eggs are high in cholesterol but the liver doesn’t digest and the body doesn’t absorb all the cholesterol especially from eggs, according to some studies a person can consume up to 30 eggs a day and not suffer from elevated cholesterol levels, what should definitely be avoided instead of eggs is refined carbs,sugars,trans fats and processed foods that elevate oxidation in LDL cholesterol.

@@terminatorjuice3310I agree, I work as a weight loss coach, and all we give our clients to eat are natural saturated fats and first class proteins, green veggies and tell them to avoid all carbs. Successfully reveresed cholesterol, high BP, type two diabetes, pcod, pcos in a matter of 1 to 4 months along with tremendous weightloss. I wonder how scientific community got it so wrong abt natural sat. fats and claiming it as poison for bp, cholesterol patients and not carbs!!!!!!

Professor Fink, Thank you for your lectures and dedication to education. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the hormonal pathway of cholesterol to testosterone. Can you refer me to any literature that can help me learn about any relationship between cholesterol and testosterone? In the meanwhile, I've read that Keye's Lipid Hypothesis included skewed data, and only exhibited countries with high cholesterol and high incidence of cardiac arrest. Some doctors believe that high blood sugar causes inflammation within arteries, which results in plaque buildup to help the artery heal. What is your opinion regarding these studies and theories? I look forward to hearing from you Dr., thank you for your time and have a great weekend.

+J Gerbode-Grant the statin drug companies have these studies and biased research to make you believe that cholesterol is the problem for brain disease so they will have the medical community convinced so they can prescribe there drugs for a bunch of more diseases. when cholesterol and fat have nothing to do with it. a lot of easy to find documentation on the subject. But once you convince the simpleton that blindy agree with statistics and blindy follow the media you have another billion dollar quarter. your brain needs cholesterol and fat. lower cholesterol will lead to low vitamin D as well, which is a huge problem in america and low vitamin d will lead to lesions in the brain. you will break down your myelin earlier if you do not supply your brain with cholesterol and EFAs. it is very scary that educated doctors are feeding us lies but also that they believe them! our diet is more low fat and low cholesterol than ever yet brain disease keeps rising, along with diabetes and obesity. you need to get your brain to run on ketone bodies eat high fat, medium protein, and low carb (dark green veggies). This is type 3 diabletes, our brain metabolism is failing to metabolize glucose and with any signs of brain disease you need to switch to a ketogenic diet asap and get off any statin drugs.

Hello there, thank you very much sir for your interesting lectures, since i'm a biochemistry student i have a little intervention about cholesterol synthesis: actually it's not synthesized using saturated fatty acid chains, as you mentioned in this lecture, but it's a result of an assembly of acetyl-coa molecules using different enzymes . i just wanted to make things clear. Thanks again sir
@professorfink
@professorfink 4 года назад
You are quite right; in other lectures covering Metabolism, I describe how acetyl-CoA sugars can be joined together to form saturated fatty acids, or reversibly broken back apart into acetyl-CoA (reverse beta-oxidation reaction). The emphasis of this course is physiology and not biochemistry. -- prof. fink

I'd love to discuss them with you as great teacher in biology domain. Have blessed day sir

Correction we do not need sugar we need glycogen which can be made from carbohydrates and even so can be found in other sources, sugar is not necessary nor required for optimal growth or homeostasis

Professor fink! I love your videos watched quite a few of them. But i feel i have to comment on something. The lipid abd cholesterol hypothesis have been disproven time and time again. It is commom knowledge that dietary cholesterol does not raise blood cholesterol. Could you please make a note on this at it is a pretty big issue in my opinion. Thanks again for the vids. M

Dear professor Link when you combine cholesterol with sugar or high levels of glucose you damage the overall value of cholesterol and mutate it's effect. LDL especially in this case which becomes harden or damaged.

hello Dr. Fink, As you said in this video, if steroids only come from animals, how do vegetarians get steroids? If they even don't eat eggs. Can human body make steroids? thank you.
@professorfink

The Liver cells have enzymes (incl. HMG CoA Reductase) that can convert saturated fatty acids (small amounts of which are found in vegetable oils) into cholesterol. In fact, the statin drugs (such as Lipitor) work by inhibiting this enzyme.

So many medical myths and unsubstantiated theories presented as fact. For example higher metabolism of males is responsible for decreased longevity compared to women is presented as fact. There are so many other factors involved and the jury is still out. For example, Progesterone and saturated fat corresponds to longevity in females and in tropical birds. Higher metabolism can be attributed to longevity in many species and in humans is necessary for healthspan...who wants to live forever suffering from poor energy reserves? Good luck to you all in medical school but take all these 'lessons' as theory and not fact.
