"Aranearum" doesn't just mean "Spider", but it literally translates to "of the spiders". This information kind of foreshadows the ending, since the island name is theoretically "Island of the spiders".

If this game gets a sequel I think an interesting plot would be somebody finding one of Charles' young and raising it into a protector of the island instead of a monster, it would show a nature vs nurture that not a lot of video games use.

I’ve always loved the design for Charles because a train car weirdly matches the general shape of a spider. Like, the large box on the back resembles a spider’s abdomen. It keeps the shape of a spider whilst not losing the train which I think adds to the fear factor. If that makes sense.

Imagine what realistic Charles would look like...probably even more terrifying than what he already is!

My take on the thousand eggs ending. In the game there is a piece of paper that talks about a creature called "Gus the Bus" and says Charles is afraid of Gus. While it is written to be somewhat of a mad scribbles from a madman, it made me think that Charles isn't the only spider/bug vehicle hybrid out there, and these eggs are proof of that. What if a sequel comes out where we have to survive in a world now populated by bug possessed vehicles? Each egg hatched a parasite larva that crawled into the first vehicle that it could find. Oh, that could even be a game mechanic. You can find abanoned vehicles to drive, but you have to be very observant and careful before climbing into one to try and drive it. If nothing seems out of place, then it is an ordinary vehicle. But if something seems off, like a bumper shaped like teeth or the radio antannae looks like a bug's antannae, then it is a hybrid creature trying to blend in and ambush any foolish prey that hops inside of it.

Theory: The eggs aren't from Choo Choo Charles. The eggs are from Gus the Bus, as there is a note talking about him, and in the church a note says "Snake VS. Spider (spiders have more legs usually)" as Gus might be a snake bus, and snakes lay eggs. Spiders also lay them, but they look different from the eggs in the game. Charles probably protects the eggs because he fears Gus and he believes Gus will come if the eggs are destroyed. Also, the way Gus would get onto the island is he probably swam, because some snakes are amphibious. (I mean that some can swim) so, he probably swam to Aranearum and went back to the mainland, then, he possessed the bus. Edit: Thanks for 200 likes! This is now my most liked comment. Also, we do not know if Gus is a snake, it is just a theory, don't get too excited!

If there is a sequel of some kind I want something water themed, submarine, tug boat, a few good options for something to be possessed. Could be on a chain of small islands forcing you to use water travel. Another idea that I haven't seen in a game yet is the use of trapdoor spiders. Only time I recall someone using them was in Eight Legged Freaks.

Something I love about this game is how simple and relaxing it is. Relaxing in the sense that it's very easy. The stealth sections are quick and linear, the weapons have infinite ammo, the scraps are easy to find and plentiful, most quests are to the point and the game mechanics are straightforward without any bells and whistles. Also this game is gorgeous. It's supposed to be an indie title and yet it has graphics (not the humans), world layout and details that surpass most tripple A games nowadays.

17:53 all those eggs could be different creatures. As it said at the start, the train was most likely possessed by a evil spirit. For all we know there could be more creatures different to Charles not hatched or found out yet.

I like a theory suggesting that Charles uses the train like how a hermit crab uses a shell. Kinda reminds me of some creatures from Monster Hunter.

Actually Charles isn’t a spirit, he in a origin story we find out he is just a smart giant spider who after getting chased away from their eggs by a lot of armed miners somehow hid inside a train and surprise attacked them, ever since then Charles has been using the train as armor

Many people believe that Charles isn’t really a train,but a spider-like monster that wears the train ,like armor. That still doesn’t explain HOW does a mining train is able to withstand an endless barrage machine gun and rocket fire.

Wait.. this means that charles was actually a giga spider like in the prehistoric times. But after he got revived by warren in a demonic ritual, it rebirthed him in a train supposedly because his old skeleton was nowhere to be found and warren owned trains a plenty. So charles isnt actually a half spider half train, he is literally a giga extra humongous spider from hell.

I don't think the creatures start out as spider trains. I think they are just spider creatures but Warren's men were transporting one in a train when it hatched. Then maybe it set up home in the train and ate anyone that came on the train or near it. It then got so big that it became too big to exit the train and grew into it, giving us current Charles. 2 things support this. 1)The ancient drawing doesnt look like a train. 2) trains weren't invented until relatively recently and if this thing is ancient, as the tablet suggests, it couldn't be a long lineage of trains. This also opens up future games to be other things besides trains like busses, tractors, etc.

Some important information you should know, in his recent livestream on youtube, the developer said that the cultists aren't actually cultists , but there is a different reason that they wear the masks.

I still remember watching somebody’s live stream of the game, and when Eugene got mauled by Charles he kept going, drove back over his body, and then didn’t care at all for his last wishes. It was hilarious and sad.

Theory: Charles wasn't always a train , he was a demon spider that found the husk of a train to live in like a hermit crab. Because there is a junkyard on the island. Edit: why does this have 1k likes?

I can *kinda* buy that Charles is possessing the train, rather than inhabiting it like a hermit crab in a stray shell (provides an explanation for how Charles can operate the horn) but I dunno. I still think the hermit-crab explanation works better

If I could do a bit of spitballing here, I don't think Charles was "spiritually revived" by one of the mining trains. I believe Charles was instead a massive cave-dwelling spider already, after his whole species existed only on Aranearum, being fiercly territorial of its den and the eggs inside, no doubt being baby giant spiders. After taking damage from the miners that discovered him, he hollowed out one of the mining trains already there and used it to armor himself from the weapons, similar to a hermit crab. Not to mention Eugene, knowing what Charles is, tells you to inflict more damage onto him by getting in some headshots, since his head is the most exposed part of the body.

Theory Someone (Most likely the Archivist) stumbles upon the nest we see at the end of the game & brings the eggs back to the mainland. If this is the Archivist, it means he's following in the same steps as Warren, choosing money over safety. If it's a new character, then they're just foolish. Once on the mainland, some the eggs hatch and a new reign of terror begins. It'll be up to a new monster hunter or perhaps even the Archivist, trying to redeem himself, to hunt down these monster trains and banish them from this world. If this is the case, we could potentially get several bosses, A bigger map and a ton of new lore! Any ideas?

I was honestly expecting Charles to be a human transformed into a spider-monster through a ritual and driven to insanity and bloodlust

i love how the developer literally said this game was meant for memes and eventually became slightly serious but a ton of people are making lore videos. but if its from mike, then its great anyways.

My theory for how Warren is involved is that he, or another member of the mining crew, first found the eggs and then activated the temple with them. Since Charles supposedly was without a body at the time, he possessed the nearest suitable vessel; a steam engine that was used to haul the eggs up to the temple. This was possibly repeated again at least once more by Warren in the hopes of communicating or reasoning with Charles, but failed when Charles just got bigger and more violent. At this point, Warren was caught between a rock and a hard place: if he left the island, not only would he have to answer for bankruptcy, but also the illegal activities the mine had imposed on its workers, not to mention he would probably be scapegoated for Charles activities. At the same time, Warren saw a way to gain power and fortune IF he could control Charles and it's spawn. While Charles was running rampant, he was also Warren's only way out of a bad situation.

Charles is a normal spider, when he took a lot of damage he crawled inside a train and used it as armour, all the eggs at the end won’t hatch into “spider trains” they will just do what Charles did 😁

... With any sequels to the game I can see how having multiple spider demons would seem like overkill, but you have to remember that charles became the spider train by possessing or just crawling into a train. The other Demon things might still be strong, but unless they have bonded to something in a similar way I don't think they would be nearly as strong as Charles... at first at least

The train on its own is pretty terrifying, but when you give it a perfectly normal name that starts with “Choo-choo”, it doesn’t seem like it should be the main antagonist of a horror game.

It's a bit creepy that Eugune looks like he's smiling while he was dying, and what's more creepy is that he didn't even blink or open his mouth

....I don't think Warren was a villain in this story. I think he was trying to beat Charles and his 'children'. The early note about guarding the egg is written a bit oddly. The last line of one of the notes near the eggs reads: 'As soon as it finishes, kill it, and bring me the body.' This line is separated by a space, similar to this paragraph and the previous. In most cases that is used to represent the transition to a new subject or line of thought. This would put distance between that line and the previous order to shoot trespassers. On top of this, there is never an explanation for the masks or why people would Worship a killer spider train. It was clear Warren and the 'cult' didn't respect or revere Charles based off how they respond at the climax. Also, Warren's plea to you is about the lives that will be harmed. He shows no real signs of greed or malace aside what we are told by the other residents. Possibly residents who are misunderstanding the situation. With all this said, here is my theory: It bares remembering we don't have a strict time line of how long Charles has been loose. But there is a note that mentions other eggs being destroyed with the prism. It was only when they got to the last 3 that Warren ordered it to be stopped. This could mean he was there while the other eggs were being destroyed and noticed something the others missed. We clearly know that Charles can absorb the energy of the eggs and it makes him much much stronger. So perhaps Warren stopped the destruction to prevent Charles from becoming indestructible (theoretically) with the destruction of all the eggs. Furthermore if Charles can take power from the eggs does that mean it sacrifices power to lay or create New eggs? I think Warren wanted the eggs to hatch so they could kill the baby spiders insider without upsetting and further strengthening Charles. Remember the line I mentioned earlier. 'As soon as it finishes (when the egg hatches), kill it, (the baby within) and bring me the body. (Evidence to show the rest of the miners)' The 'cult masks' were probably meant as a fake out and 'disguise' for the baby spiders. None of them would (hopefully) know what Charles would look like. So maybe the masks could have fooled the new born spiders into thinking they were 'kin' long enough to destroy them. At that point, with a baby spider corpse to show the rest of the mining community, Warren might convince them to band together to try and take out Charles. Possibly by waiting for more eggs to be 'laid' and thus putting Charles in a hypothetically weakened state to die. After that they could search out and gather the new eggs with no ready threat to stop them and use the prism to destroy them all.

I love how the main character isn’t some random person, and although monsters aren’t common (at the beginning of the game it’s said that they haven’t had something like Charles in a while), they appear enough in this world to have specialist like the main character exists to combat them.

Way I see it. Warren probably knew about the other eggs under the bridge. That's why he was willing to sacrifice the first three. As for the eggs themselves, well the released a lot of energy right. Maybe to Warren the eggs were basically a limitless energy source which to him meant he could get a lot more money. I don't know I just can't help but feel that Warren Charles III wasn't doing everything simply for the greater good, I feel like he had an ulterior motive somewhere, something he wasn't sharing.

If one Charles was bad enough, it’s gonna be the end of the world against an entire army of them! They better get the military involved in the sequel!

I don't think the eggs contain spider trains, but actual spiders. my own theory is that Choo Choo Charles isn't a spirit inhabiting a train, but the spider from the ancient tablet that went inside the train for protection, and safety. I what I think happened, the Charles Mining Company discovered the eggs, and not knowing what they do, they collect them and place track to collect them, but the spider emerged and killed some of the workers, but they shoot at the creature with they're guns(I have a feeling that Charles Warren III had knew something big was on the island when he found the ancient tablet at some point) and the spider goes inside the train for armor, that's why Eugene tells us to take head shots.

I personally think you do your theories very well but I would like to say my own theory about this.I believe that Warren actually knew what was on that island, and that's some kind of dark secret of his family, and because he started to get into financial problems he decided to go to the island and try to recover some fossils or some ancient archives,‏because his workers from the start were wanderin if they were really searching for gold. So they dig and dig and dig but then they found what they were looking for and boy oh boy did they found it. So they discovered the eggs and Charles, and Charles discovered the train which he used as a shell because I believe that Charles is just spider with magical powers.also i don't believe that the cultists are really cultists,because when they see Charles then don't pray for him like a big like a god instead they run in fear, also they received orders from william to kill whatever that comes from the eggs,and thirdly the creator of the game refered to them as mobsters and not as cultist. Also i believe that the reason they wear these masks is to disguise themselfs as the children of charles so he won't attack them, not really working but worth trying. So thats my theory please free to Correct me

sorry man the origin of choo choo charles is wrong When warren found out that the eggs are energy containers,they started to mine for them.And when they found a GIANT cavern with alot of these eggs,they made train tracks to transport the eggs but they didnt notice the spider like creature towering over them. As Eugene knew, he brought guns with them and of course they shot at charles so to escape the damage from the guns,charles fit himself in one of the mining company trains and started killing everything he came across with.
