Everyone should be careful with products we consume. The more I look, the more I realize that corporations just don't care about people, it's disgusting. Thank you so much for sharing this information.
I read that in India there is a thought that lead is beneficial. We have routinely bought spices/ingredients from stores that specialize in importing from outside the US. We enjoy Asian, Italian, and Indian cuisines. I had the impression that if we went to buying whole spices and grinding our own we could avoid heavy metals. Thank you for the reminder of the quality of the soil also has a bearing in their presence in the final product. I will work to get my own herbs started and remove all the imported items. I did run across a list of recommended brands but they are not always in stock at the stores. Thank you for doing this video and bringing this to the public's attention.
I didn't realize this was such an issue! Thanks, doc. I discovered that some cocoa/chocolate also has unacceptable levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic. I subscribe to a site called Consumer Lab. It's like Consumer Reports, but for vitamins, minerals & other supplements. CL tests, reviews & rates these substances, including cocoa & chocolate. I highly recommend it. The entry for cocoa mentions this, which I thought was interesting: "Since cadmium, as well as lead, compete for absorption with other metals, you may be able to reduce their absorption by making sure that you're getting adequate calcium, iron, and zinc in your diet (Nawrot, Biometals 2010)"
Here's the full citation for that Nawrot source: Nawrot TS, Staessen JA, Roels HA, Munters E, Cuypers A, Richart T, Ruttens A, Smeets K, Clijsters H, Vangronsveld J. Cadmium exposure in the population: from health risks to strategies of prevention. Biometals. 2010 Oct;23(5):769-82. doi: 10.1007/s10534-010-9343-z. Epub 2010 Jun 3. PMID: 20517707.
I just checked Consumer Lab & they have tested turmeric & cinnamon - maybe more spices that are used as antioxidants/supplements. They mention that with turmeric, it's the root form of the spice that contains high levels of heavy medals as opposed to the extract. Also, Coumadin can be an issue with cinnamon (as well as heavy metals)
Thanks for making a video on this. I recently found out a brand of cinnamon my family often uses is laced with lead and I had no idea this was an issue common in spices. I will try to tell my family to get things fresh instead.
Greatly appreciate your video. I am shocked and appalled by the information you provided. This is the first I’ve heard of this and we use jar spices regularly. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this. I was already aware of this problem, but having the site you recommended at my disposal will make my decisions much easier going forward.
Good timing, most herbs are very easy to grow. Ive been craving mint lately. Going to grow a bunch of it this year. I like to do watermelon fasts and soak in a clay bath once in awhile. Helps keep the body clean, makes you feel good.
Excellent and helpful information - thanks so much for making this information/warning available to the public. You can also dehydrate and grind your own herbs - works well and they are much better than store bought.
The carnivore diet exposed me to this. When you eliminate everything, you become re-sensitized. This way you can tell what affects you, what is fine for you, and what hurts your health when you insert it back in. I noticed even certain blend spices had negative mental effects on me which was exposed from this. I came to the conclusion that you were talking about here. I feel the best on a carnivore diet, but more importantly is the QUALITY of products and foods over everything. Before the carnivore diet, I had a huge breakthrough in my health (which was never bad to begin with) in just switching to 100% farmstead vegetables and herbs, local farmstead eggs, and grass fed grass finished beef. Same diet, just different sources. The taste is way different, the foods have way more nutrition, and aren't full of poisonous pesticides. But to see spices having an affect on me by exposing it via the carnivore diet, it is crazy to see what is allowable for food quality in this country. It explains the health crisis in the US. Death by a million paper cuts.
Interesting...I've been using cinnamon in coffee and anywhere from two to twenty different spices in my breakfast for about 15 years. I also have ~10 metal amalgam fillings. I don't eat a lot of fish or consume fish oil supplements. What tests for heavy metals do you suggest?
A lot of spices come from India, the far East. Some known to be a premium place to grow. I read labels all the time. It's crazy. The industrial age/greedy profiter's follow us everywhere. Thanks for the heads up. note; I don't believe that storing fresh spices in a plastic container in the freezer is a healthy practice either...
Dear Dr, this subject made me remember the problem with tricresyl phosphate, beryllium present in jet engine oil; sometimes a fume event allows droplets of said oil to penetrate the cabin through bleed air ( except in the Boeing 787 ). I don't remember if I had already suggested that you watch YT videos with the title Aerotoxic syndrome. I'll watch the rest of your video. Have a blessed day!❤
By all means minimize contaminants but I wonder about the lifetime relative risk of scrumptious home cooking being a habit and expectation vs. kids who learn to appreciate hyperpalatable industrial foods more. Somewhere those lines must cross towards CV diaease and diabetes.
Specifically regarding cinnamon, you have provided me a reason to finally stop drinking Fireball. I will continue to enjoy whiskey, but holy crap thats scary, especially if lead is being used to enhance color and mass.
Dear Dr. I'd like to tell you a bit about the importance of researching proteasomes, especially for neurologists. If proteasomes don't break completely the proteins that they are supposed to break, that would lead to the accumulation of chunks of proteins in cells, including neurons. Therefore, knowing the amino acid sequences ( are there any unusual, rare amino acids in the composition of proteasomes? Maybe some D-amino acid among the vast majority of L-amino acids? ). Have a blessed evening!
Apps like Ventusky show where the air is more polluted in the world and it's possible to get info on different types of pollutants. About whoever adds Led and other poisons to foods intentionally, they must be held accountable.
This is concerning. I use Turmeric often because my roommate has MS and turmeric is supposed to help with that. Now granted, I know that minimal turmeric isn't a huge boost of assistance, but still...
Storing in anything plastic is now also concerning due to nanoplastics and PFAS. So what is the alternative? We have very few choices. Plastics are literally EVERYWHERE AND IN MOST EVERYTHING. GLASS OR STAINLESS STEEL WATER BOTTLES NEED TO BE SOLD IN STORES ASAP. They are reusable. WE MUST DEMAND IT, ESPECIALLY FOR THE LITTLES. NO MORE PLASTICS.
According to the Consumer Reports article: Focus on herbs and spices that are lower in heavy metals. These were black pepper, coriander, curry powder, garlic powder, saffron, sesame seeds, and white pepper. That doesn’t mean that every brand of these herbs and spices is low in heavy metals, because we didn’t test them all. But it is easy to find low-risk versions of them. Also: ... But only three-Al Wadi Al Akhdar, Bolner’s Fiesta, and McCormick-specifically said they test products in their manufacturing plants for heavy metals. Costco, Litehouse, and McCormick said their goal is to have heavy metals as close to zero as possible, but no company provided the thresholds they consider acceptable.
What is the big deal? For time immemorial the food industry knowingly poisoning people in the in the US. We all know about it and keep consuming these products and feel good finding them tasty and getting fat and sick in the process. We deserve it as we stand by doing nothing only to blame the other side not realizing that they are same people!
