Great video! This is the sensible choice. Many of us in the community should learn from your mentality, rather than blindly going big. Load range is a nice mention. I'm also looking for load range C in my next set of tires and found it really limits size availability.
@Ramiel77

Same. Need new tires for my '22 4Runner and I want something with more side resistance than a SL tire, but I don't want the weight and stiff ride of an E tire. For some reason the industries has gotten obsessed with look over performance, and is creating nothing but "hybrid/rugged-terrain" tires, that are suuuuper heavy, don't have the 3 peak snow flake rating, and 99% of people don't actually need. Bu they look aggressive and are softer to make them quieter than mud terrains. Hope this trend dies off sooner rather than later. A lot of us want a pragmatic tire, or at least more C load options

This is shocking to hear. Why wouldn't you go with load E for the extra protection, especially since you wheel hard yourself?

I think you went the right way on it. Certainly easier on your running gear and especially if you’re going to continue daily driving it. You can always get another set of wheels for off-road use with the 285’s and just switch them out if you’re going where you need them.

Great video and great insight. Although I considered the KO2s I eventually went with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT in a 275/70/R17 on the same wheels as you. Perfect size and offset for sero rubbing. I am an 80-20 split for on-road vs off-road travel with a TRD 2" leveling kit installed. I love the ride and stance of my setup and would recommend the Cooper tires to anyone. Happy Trails everyone.

Agreed. It's not worth the additional costs across the board for larger tires if you daily drive and are on pavement 99% of the time. I say ego is the main culprit for larger tires, suspension and blah, blah, blah. That was in my younger days when I didn't know better and it cost me big time. Driving a 2019 Tacoma with 55,000 miles on 265's Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain A/T's and they've been great. They'll be replaced this summer. Really enjoy your videos, nice work young lady!!

Great video, I’m on my second set of bfg ko tires. The first set was 270 75 17 on 4 gen 4runner. It’s the only size they had and I needed snow tires for up coming storm. Got worse mileage and something didn’t feel right. The second set I scored a great price and they were stock size 265 70 17. Off roading better, mileage went up a little . The engineers picked that size for a reason. I live off dirt roads, I Don’t think I will divert from these tires. Oh and 50 k on first set. I appreciate seeing women who know what they are doing and you are awesome!

Great video Chloe! Unless you go through all the extra steps of re-gearing and so on... you definitely made the right choice. And the Tacoma (while awesome) isn't the fastest or most efficient truck in the world, so keeping the tires close to stock size makes a ton of sense.
@DeuceDeuceBravo
@DeuceDeuceBravo Год назад
Smart choice! 285's require a lot of work to maintain driveability. And load range is so important... Too many people think "E" must be better but it's complete overkill for a Tacoma (unless you're doing really gnarly rock crawling) and ends up hurting power and ride quality. The new tires are probably a lot grippier than the worn tires, which will greatly affect MPG. Old tires that still have a lot of tread will still lose a lot of grippiness over the years.

I think this is a good choice... between both for ground clearance there are not big difference, to make a difference you need 33 or 35 inch.... but between 265 and 285 the difference is for the mechanic... 265 are better for the mechanic... 33 and more , make a huge difference for mechanic and cost a lot of more to put correctly with the good components. You run 17 inch wheel so you can't put 75 ratio... if you your truck are on R16 ... you can put 75 ratio it s not very heavier and a little bit more high... I run R16 so I can make this little change and cost nothing... but R17 not available so I think you make a good choice to stay with 265 . 👍

We've been thinking about doing this on my son's Tacoma. He has the Sport model 4x2 with the stock 265/65/17 tires. We bought it used and the tires on it are street tires that are about half worn. He wants to go with black rims so I'm looking at TRD Pro wheels with slightly larger tires. Not planning on going to 285 tires though as they are noticeably heavier and will make the truck feel slower and less responsive on the street. Love your videos by the way!

Hi Chloe. I just put 285/65r 17s on my 21 Tacoma. They look great and ride super. The tires were new old stock General Grabbers which are hard to find but work out great.

I have a '13 4runner w 265/70/17 as well. Great video w visual to help my decision. I don't off road and only drive a few times a month to local shopping. I probably decide on Michelin All Season because of its reputation. I need quiet and less noise on normal road. Never use Bf Goodrich Tko2 before due to high cost. Maybe, I'll change my mind who knows. Love the aggressive look of it for sure.😅

You might gain a little mpg back when the edges of the blocks wear some. The new sharp edges grab the road more and cause more resistance. I have a 2001 Yukon XL that I slapped some 285/45/22's A/T tires on and I lost about 4-5 miles per gallon. My tank is 32.5 gallons so I lost about 120 miles per tank.$$$. I am debating to level out my Yukon to squeeze in a slightly taller tire on or just go back down in size on rims for beefier tires. Yeah some people will say why would I put a setup like mine on an SUV but hey it works for me for my daily driving and occasional beat up mountain roads, sand and ice and snow of which I never had a problem with.

I have KO2s in 265/75/r16s, so... basically same size overall just smaller rim and I'm on stock suspension and height. (Planning on leveling with bilstein 5100s) Tires rub very slightly on the wheel well plastic at harsh turning angles, like steep driveways or parking lot entrances, but can avoid that to some degree with practice lol It doesn't harm anything just an ugly noise.

Just got a 2022 Tacoma and am looking at all ways to make it better. You went with a bigger tire size but I don't see where you figure in the tire size difference in your mileage equations. The other problem you have is going to a large tire and not changing your axle ratio. For 33's you should be geared at 4.11 or 4.56. If your still geared at 3.07 your Tacoma is going to be a dog and your mileage will suffer. If you have done these and I missed then sorry for that. Like all you videos .. I did subscribe 🤠

Worn down tires are more smooth on pavement probably why they get better gas mileage. I have similar thing going on. I drive a 2020 LT Chevy Trail Boss. The tires the truck came with Wrangler Duratracs they are nice but I'm trying Nitto Grappler G2's for now. I think you made the best decision to keep the smaller tire. Why lower your gas mileage and increase the workload on your truck for no reason? It's not like you're going to do crazy off roading. My truck is also my daily driver I plan on doing the crazier modification later on in life to it. I'd rather get an older vehicle and put stupid big tires and all the wild modifications rather than my daily driver. I can use my current truck as a "toy" later on in life when I buy another daily driver to replace it. I am Chevy loyal the way you are Toyota loyal.

I’m 285/70r17 Nitto ridge grapplers. I love them! I used to run ko2 when I had my jeep but I noticed with the nitto on the Tacoma it gets me through some pretty soft sand. 😊 I’ve debated on going back to KO2 🧐 🤔

I guess there’s only so many Tacoma mods one can do. Although the content is good, This channel has run its course

Great video Chloe, well explained and did the start move. I am looking to do the same setup, so my question is will that tire size work on stock suspension that comes in the trd off road with out rubbing? Or do I still need a small lift on it? Thanks and keep up the good work

I love watching your channel and seeing the mods that you do. I’m curious to know how cheap you receive these parts/mods? Because these things are pretty expensive.
