Most “sealed” transmissions are titled that way to scare the normal diyer. They’re similar to some differentials where you’ll have a fill plug and a drain plug. Once you locate these two plugs your first open your fill plug (this way you can check the level and no point in draining something you can’t refill). Than remove your drain plug and drain all the fluid. The next step you’ll need to pick up some sort of hand pump (almost like a big soap dispenser) and hose. *in most vehicles you fill to the fluid spills over and out of the fill plug than you wipe away the excess and replace the plug and you should be good to go! 👍
I think it would be a ton easier to just keep a spare key fob battery in the truck and change it out when it goes bad as opposed to changing the guts from the aftermarket to the factory. You gotta change the battery anyway right?
I purchased one off the auction for that reason 😬 I did all the work myself and it came out to $33k for a trd offroad with the premium packaging double cab
I noticed a significant improvement in the shift points after I spent some time using the adaptive cruise control. In the winter I get 16-18 miles per gallon...with a bit of time with the remote starter woworking. In the warmer weather, staying around the speed limit, and coasting down declines or gently gathering speed to help with the up-coming hill, I can get slightly over 23mpg.
It's nice to hear that you plan on keeping your Tacoma for the duration of it's life. When they eventually redesign the Taco in a couple of years they'll probably install a twin turbo engine. I'm not a big fan of that idea.
Nice that you weighed in on the so called transmission issues, I’ve been wondering what your poison is on these complaints. I to have not done an after market tune; instead had a flash done at the dealership and have no issues with power or acceleration. I did like the comment about user error, I see we work in the same field. Thanks for sharing, love the vids. Cheers from 🇨🇦😉
My 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport ECM died and after a week it was replaced. The automatic shifting issue was improved but still somewhat annoying to me. The hunting is lessened but it's still there. The biggest issue is that if you suddenly need to accelerate while merging onto the freeway it'll pause a second before downshifting too aggressively to first or second and bounce off the rev limit and the truck won't be able to accelerate and you will either need cancel the merge or or risk getting rear ended by the vehicle behind you. It seems like the computer doesn't know what to do and goes into neutral momentarily or over revs and then eventually figures out the appropriate gear but that adds another second of delay. Very annoying and dangerous when you suddenly need to accelerate from a rolling start.
Why not just keep some extra batteries in the console and change out the battery on the key fob when needed instead of swapping the internals back to the Oem fob? I just don’t understand the reasoning to do the extra work?
Due to the level of likelihood of working and urgency to fix. With your approach, the extra batteries might die. With your approach, after replacing the batteries how quickly do you need to get the 2nd set of extras after using the first set? Her approach, answer is never, no urgency.
Thanks for another very helpful video! It seems odd to me that Toyota would recommend oil changes every 10K miles but program the truck to show a maintenance alert every 4500?? Those headlight are SIIICK!! I love the "TRD Pro" detail!
nice informative video, but as far as the key fob is concerned, wouldn't it be easier to keep a spare lithium battery in your console or owners manual vinyl pocket. I mean if you are going to need the tools to change anything out back to the original fob, it seems it'd be more convenient to just change the battery in your modded fob....js
No I haven’t changed my key fob it doesn’t bother me that much but I can understand why some people do it you talk about keeping all the parts of the original key fob so you can start up the truck. You could also just keep a couple of spare batteries in your glove box or centre console.
my truck leaked from the 3rd brake light since i got it in 2016. i ended up replacing the seal myself last year. recently i took it in for the 60K service and they did the recall inspection. the interior needed the headliner and carpet replaced. additionally, they needed to do mold removal which necessitated stripping the interior to the bone, including removal of the soundproofing. now they cannot put it back together because, at the moment, there is no toyota soundproofing material in the states. they've had it since late September and cannot give me an estimated time for completion. just something to be aware of if you plan to take it in for service/recall. dont let them start the repair if they dont have all the parts on hand!
Thanks for all the great info! I have 3rd gen with stock TRD off road16 inch tires, ! want to upgrade to 17's you mentioned in the beginning of the video. What width should the rim be? in searching for TRD rims they have 7" 7.5" and 8" . what width would be best suited to use for 265/70/R17 tire?
I wish i never sold my 2nd gen for the 3rd gen. A big mistake for me nothin but issues lol no power always shifting and gettin stuck in 5,6 gear. Tip keep your 2nd gen tacos
I was never fully impressed with the 3rd Gen which is why I stuck with my 2nd Gen 15’ Taco, and almost 7 years later I have had 0 issues with it (knock on wood) although I am interested to see what the next gen Tacoma brings to the table which I hope delivered a full redesign from the ground up
I have a 2nd Gen 2005 TRD Sport with 173k miles on it. All I had to do is oil, air filters and tires. Toyota did replace my frame for free because of road salt here in Northeast. I just recently swapped out my headlights and taillights for a newer look with leds. I also just replaced my stock rims. This Tacoma was my choice of my family vehicle. This is my favorite vehicle I've owned so far.
Great video. Of course since my rig has a a manual transmission, a lot of the 3rd Gen Tacoma issues do not apply. Noticed that you are using one of those reusable oil type filter. Not my favorite. You do a great job of keeping up with the maintenance, so the filter may be OK. IMHO, a good paper filter (e.g., WIX or Napa) is a better choice. Anyway... thx for the all the information.
Chloe is the best lady on the tube. Hey J., watch the air filter review on "Project Farm" below, also the oil filter test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sJ3L-E-ufYo.html
The timing belt gasket can leak. Simple gasket. Costs ~2500$ to get to it and replace it. And don’t forget the always popular frame rust issues. Seems this one will never go away.
Hey, thank you for the great video as always! I just wanted to share my experience with tuning. I have a 2018 TRD Off-Road and just like you, i was completely satisfied with how it drove for 2 years. I had no complaints whatsoever. Honestly, i didn’t really understand what everyone was complaining about. Then, a few months ago, i decided to get the KDMAX tune just to see what all the fuss is about. When i tell you, that tune is the best mod i have done to my truck by far, i am not exaggerating. I now feel like an “enlightened” tacoma owner. Instantly it became a completely different truck! Its hard to describe, but it really is 100% worth every penny. Gas mileage has stayed exactly the same for me but it drives so much better! The best way to describe it is that the truck now feels so light and agile. I do not have any experience with any of the other tunes out there but my advice is that the KDMAX tune should be the first thing any new taco owner does! Im really interested to hear your thought on it if you ever do get it. I am willing to bet that your experience would be similar to mine!
oh sick ur 4rm daygo. same here. don't hate me but I'm a frontier owner. I like hearing from women on channels like this. it breaks the stigma. keep the good content.
Chloe,, love your videos…just an FYI,,,I installed the Sprint Booster in my 2017 Sport…WOW!! increased the the performance of how the truck drives and increased my mpg
This video is eye opening. I currently have a 08 Honda Civic. I’m a carpenter that likes to go portaging and camping, our family is also growing.. this is why I’m looking into trucks. I think a Tacoma might be the right call
Great video as always Chloe! I had a thought, what if you put the key fob in a RF blocking bag, that would work as well right? I have one for my mobile and just thought about it when you mentioned the feature of turning off the signal. 🤔
I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 in Cement Gray and I love it! I just paid it off because I got tired of the payments and I’m just gonna save my money now instead.
Food for thoughts, I would always start you lugs with fingers then hit it with a driver. It's pretty easy to cross-thread them when you hit them with the driver straight of the bat.
before buying my 2020 TRDOR, I didn't know about the gear hunting on the AT Tacos. I wanted to get a Manual Taco because I've driven a a manual for the past 20 years prior. Plus, Manuals are getting rarer by the day so I wanted to get me one that will last me a while before I can't buy a manual anymore. I'm so glad I made that decision because that gear hunting problem on the ATs would've driven me crazy.
I am currently running a 255/85R16 on my stock Taco. These tires are 33 inches tall but they are skinny. It's got a great look and hasn't rubbed yet (It might at full lock and full stuff). I highly recommend the falken wildpeak MT in this size. Very quiet for a MT tire and not too expensive. They are also supposed to wear well. Thank you for the videos!
You can get a engine brace for the turns, it hold the body from twisting and when you get a ebay coilover kit it all works together to strengthen the stability of the truck in turns and general just driving or going fast.. and it looks good 👍 I love your enthusiasm for souping up a trd I bet you would love fast cars too. I got a ws6 trans am when I was 15 and I gotta say it changed my life
The 1 bar works fine. But they have 4 bars that do even more supposedly I've only had the 1. Make sure the holes are drilled by someone right because after time it could get locked in place from the stretching and won't be able to un bolt or just maintain it
Thanks for your video --- a question...did you need new lug nuts for the TRD rims that you have? &, as always, I learned something(s) new from your video. 😀
Great video..I also have a tune. I went with the ovtune which turns it into a beast when needed. But just getting around town if still feels laggy sometimes. Driver me alittle crazy 🤪. But I really love my truck.
I thought I would add something about the sensors. I got a leveling kit, and 265/70/17 after taking my truck through snow and having about 200lbs of snow packed under my truck the sensors would work. I had to get them reset.
Hey just a heads up, when you're using a torque wrench, use the shortest extension necessary and keep one hand on the head one on the handle. The longer extensions are more likely to move off plane from seated on the fastener which can give you an incorrect torque value. 👍🏻👌🏻
From everyone I've talked to that has gotten 5.29 gearing, they get better gas mileage than from factory. Plus more low end response which is needed imo. Just asked my friend a couple days ago. He went from 15 mpg, to 19 & he's on 35s.
@@mariomarquez5559 It''s not necessarily about fuel economy. The question is: do you need more aggressive gearing to improve drivability? People who have modified their trucks with bigger tires and lots of heavy parts will definitely benefit from lower gearing. However, someone with a stock truck probably doesn't need it, unless they just want more responsive acceleration.
5.29 sure fire way to make sure you dont get anywhere fast. unless you plan on chopping the hell out of your truck and throwing 35"+ tires on it then its not worth it, and if you have a manual taco 5.29 dont even bother with regearing at all.
going with 5.29s or even 4.88s, you'll get better mileage while driving city (slower). your mpgs (compared to stock gearing) drop when you get on the freeway.
Install a K&N intake air filter ASAP. They are guaranteed for 1 Million miles and need to be cleaned and re-oiled every 50K miles. They allow the engine to breathe easier. Have your Tacoma Tuned with the Overland Tailor Tune. This will STOP your Tacoma from “hunting for the correct gear”. This tune can also increase your mpg by 1 mpg.
For largest tires to run on stock suspension. What offset can I run a 265/70r17 on. Would it run with a Method 17x8.5 zero offset with 4.75” back spacing? Thanks!
I think Toyota just needs to bring there diesel engines over. If Toyota did that I bet it would solve a lot of problems and sale would sky rocket as well. Keep up the vidoes!!!
It would just make the taco more expensive that it needs to be. Theyre already not cheap 😂. And they would likely be less reliable because of the emissions treatment equipment that all diesels have nowadays in Europe and North America
Amazing descriptions! I’ve been watching all your videos little by little as I’m becoming a member of the beloved Tacoma. I liked a lot the part that you surf and how you change the key connection. I didn’t understand that part well. Is there a link to understand that better? Thank you!!
The pedal commander was the best mod for my 19 TRD. Huge difference in throttle response and seems to help with the shift points as well. Best bang for the buck so far
@@mseely0075411 I have a similar product. It's called a sprint booster. It's probably the same thing, just a different company but I can still use my cruise control fine
Works 100% with cruise control. I researched what was available and I still have zero regrets with the Pedal commander. Helps a lot when I pull my 19th camper through town
If someone sees this ASAP.. i have achance to get a 2020 Tacoma with Ironman stage 2 3" lift, methis 17" rims and BF goodrich KO2 33's, truck has 31524 miles for $37,800... Thoughts???
Concerning the issues some have with the transmission. I do 1 simple thing which gives me everything I need when I need it. Just drive your V6 6 speed in 5th gear. S mode. Leave it until you reach 50mph or so. Running ExxonMobil 87, I often hit high 20s with occasionally 34 mpg. Everything is stock on my 2016 trd sport 4x4 access cab. Driving in 5th reminds me of the way my transmission is in my 1995 SR5 V6 4x4 extended cab with 6 ft bed. There is NO hesitation! Oh. Drop an "aeroskin hood protector" by AVS on your hood. Matte black. 3M tape. Hugs the hood. You're welcome.
Chloe, the auto trans service is a process, just a process. You a certainly capable IMO. No black magic, voodoo or masters in engineering required. Would make for a great video for your channel in the future 😊
Hi, just have a question on 3rd gens do you hear much on air conditioning problems I’m having a problem even getting an a c compressor on the east coast
i love everything about the truck EXPECT! the gas..problems. as in. you gotta put gas on the thing for quite a bit. but otherwise it is really good. it does it jobs.
Do not every 10k you ruin new toyota engine. Max of any car every 5k oil changes. High mileage check sooner in between condition and levels before next oil change plus filter.
Grea video. I like your comment on the transmission concern. So far I haven’t had any issues with my 17 basic Tacoma that I got in March. I did notice the gear shift ratios. Personally it became a non-issue for as I got to used to driving the truck. My only complaint is no driver side grab bar, but that going to be fixed.
I would say one of the biggest problems with the 3rd gen tacoma is oil dumping through the pcv valve system and pooling up in #5 and #6 when off camber. You will begin to see white smoke and your engine will take a huge dump from being hydrolocked. Usually a catch can will prevent this but it's never a full proof fix.
Hey I just got a 2022 toyota tacoma sport and I want to get rims and tires for it and you please send me the info for the one that you have on your toyota tacoma, Thank
I don't care what Toyota says, change your oil every 3k for conventional oil, every 5k for synthetic oil. I work on a ton of Toyota vehicles, and waiting 10k to change your oil will kill your engine life.
I’m a chemical engineer and work in automotive field . We test the engine oils at intervals at 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k, 25k miles for all types of engine. We take this data and report it to the manufacture so they can set the ratings for cars. Full synthetic is perfectly safe and offers better protection for engines. If the manufacture states 10k than your fine as long as you use the correct oil stated. My 2007 Tacoma has over 350k miles and I change the oil every 10k. Using full synthetic we find that even at 15k the oil is 80% dirty and 20% clean. It also helps to have a solid oil filter installed and to change it every time you change your oil.
@@09FoxRider it has been my experience that engines stay cleaner, and last longer at the intervals I stated. Almost every cat I have serviced that was well over it's service interval, had super dirty oil, and was also low on oil, including several Toyota models. I have a filter from my car, and one from another Toyota that way over on its oil change. Even though I run Royal Purple, my filter looked hardly used, and the other filter was not.
Looks like they put to much transmission fluid in the transfer case. I would recommend draining and follow the instructions state in the owners manual. Transmission fluid expands under heat.
One simple thing that I didn't know when I first bought my 18 TRD OR was that the rear locker only works in 4L. I thought I'd be able to use it in 4H but after reading the manuel there's like one sentence where it says it's only available in 4L Aside from the automatic transmission still hunting gears from time to time, one complaint that I feel like could be changed via software is that you can drive the truck away (steal it/ take it out of park) without the key fob in the vehicle. I know this isn't at all unique to the Tacomas, Toyota and alot of manufacturers in general but I feel something like that is so easy to place in the software. The vehicle already tells you if the key is not present and the transmission locks you out until you put your foot on the brake pedal which has an electronic switch in it already. More of a quality of life thing and I know you could still manually lock the doors with the physical key but again just a nit pick. The 2GR engine has proven it's reliability in other Toyota/Lexus models well so far but for what it is wow does it drink gas likes it's nothing. That little V6 has a hard time pushing the truck along and at best its okay when towing/hauling with a moderate amount of squat. A weight distribution hitch strongly recommended for even coming near max towing capacity and an aftermarket brake controller under the dash is gives great peace of mind. Speaking of quality, Im not sure if it just because I do alot of highway miles but the paint chips way too much. All the way down to the bear metal
Just put a downpayment on a trd sport today. It is the first new vehicle I have ever purchased, and I feel a little unworthy of it. Never pictured me buying a brand new Toyota truck, its like going from fish food to caviar from my 2003 lib.
I wanted a 3rd Gen but the transmission shifting, seating position, bad gas mileage, ancient dashboard, lack of quality skid plates, no front locker and weak engine performance I was disappointed and did buy one.
