Choosing papers for your prints. What have I learned from hundreds of prints in my printer testing

Some thoughts on navigating the vast choice of papers available for printing your photos and art. Why actually looking at the results can matter more than just checking the specifications.
After producing hundreds of prints as part of a printer review, and profiling over 25 different papers, I'm left wondering how I'd choose which to use. It really comes down to how the print of your image looks. Why paper choice should be a finishing touch, not the key part of your printing.

Thanks again for your detailed examination of printing and choosing the right paper. Printing is a minefield of mistakes and I would advise anybody to come and watch your channel as it's helped me alot. Thanks again 👍

Thank you, Keith. This very much addresses my questions from an earlier communication. I’m using Red River papers, and I’ve been very satisfied over all. I’ve just been focused on which of their two matte paper lines to settle on: Aurora Art Natural vs. Palo Duro Smooth Rag 315. The latter has a slightly higher dmax and better linearity, but is substantially costlier (but still quite reasonable). And let’s give a shout-out to Drew, the President of Red River Paper, who responded directly my inquiry about the two matte papers with no-nonsense answers. Excellent customer service. Again, watching this video was reassuring that the key is balancing the numbers and the actual results in real-world prints. I appreciate all your efforts to educate us into being better printers and artists. Gratitude!

A few months ago I printed a whole series of A2 prints for an exhibition on that Hahnemühle metallic paper. It was a very specific choice for my pictures. All pictures showed late autumn trees with a lot of leaves in typical fall colors. They were moody scenes, photographed from above against the dark forest-floor and the trees were only illuminated by a warm twilight coming through the forest making the foliage really glowy. This glow-effect was perfectly represented on that kind of paper and the visitors talked a lot about the great presentation. But I think it only worked so good, because the pictures didn't have, except from the foliage, any large bright (like sky) or even white areas in it. A special paper for special scenes but really great (and vastly expensive) under the right conditions

great info..... My favorite papers are Canson Platine fibre rag, Red River Ultra Polar Lustre 300 and Red River Polar Lustre Metallic 255. I do mostly Landscapes and waterfalls and seascapes. I'm using a Canon Pro 300 with a BenQ SW272U which is calibrated.... The Red River paper is certainly the best bang for the buck by far.....

You are right, most of the „standard“ papers of different suppliers are quite comparable if not identical. But especially Hahnemühle has some unique papers in the portfolio: The Metallic is such an example and the Photo Rag Pearl. Later one is my all time favorite luster paper. Whenever you get your hands on some samples of this give it a try…

I still consider myself to be on the low end of the learning curve with regard to printing, but with my limited experience (helped in large measure by this great channel and associated learning resources), I've generally gotten great results from my P900 primarily using "appropriate" papers (mostly OBA-free "archival"). I tend to favor baryta for sharper/higher-dynamic range images and textured rag matte paper for softer, higher-key images, while images with high reflectance/sheen (some very low-key) really shine (so to speak) on metallic. For most other images, I often go with Luster (specifically, Epson Ultra Premium), although IMO, pretty much anything looks good on luster! I use the OEM ICC profiles (pre-loaded of course for Epson) for color, ABW mode for B&W, and rarely go beyond 1440.

Hi Keith, here’s a crazy question and I think it has to do with paper: suppose I want to have intentional ink bleed? To create a slightly watercolor effect. Can you imagine how I could do that?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 5 месяцев назад
Yes, use a paper not made for inkjet - an actual watercolour paper for example?

Keith, 1:51 & 2:03 When moving the paper this way, don't micro-scratches appear on the glossy surface? 25 years ago, glossy paper was delicate and the gloss was scratched, and you could accidentally tear the top layer with your fingernail.

These are scrap prints ;-) I handle prints for sale and clients rather more carefully - but prints are rather more robust these days.

@KeithCooper

Yes, but the "specs, charts and graphs" do still help me get to the point where I can reliably get an image reproduced and decide whether I like it - the two aspects work together, but what it looks like is the final arbiter...

Hi Keith, Thanks for your ongoing series of interesting videos. I have a question about papers and inks. I use a Canon Pixma Pro 100. It uses 8 colors of inks and can print up to 13" X 19". I sell prints as art, when I can. Sadly sales are not very good, and I'm interested in reducing my costs without sacrificing image quality and longevity. There are plenty of third party inks and papers that are cheaper, but none of them can guarantee that they won't fade. I'd hate to cut corners and disappoint a customer with a print that doesn't last. Any suggestions for combinations that perform just as well, and cost less?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 5 месяцев назад
Cheaper or maintain quality - choose just one... My main issue is that 3rd party inks effectively would break all my icc profiles, that's before you get longevity issues. Add to that the fact that the old PRO-100 inks are hardly outstanding from an archival POV to begin with, and it's not an issue I can see a way round. However, I've not done any personal testing of 3rd party inks - depends how much you believe their sale pitch ;-)

@@KeithCooper Thanks for the prompt response, Keith. I anticipated your answer, but was hoping that you might know something that I missed. I've been using the printer for around ten years now. Am pleased with the results and have not seen any obvious fading. Canon claims the colors will last a long time. So far, I have not been able to prove them wrong. I look forward to your videos. Thanks for all of your honest insights and perspectives. Frank

I have a question - It's not directly regarding paper - But more in regards of framing :) Not so long ago I printed pictures to my dear moms 70th birthday - The pictures was of the churches where she had been a priest at. I did the om Ilford something textured cotton in b/w. I loved the look when having the papers in my hands, but when framing the with Acryllic "glas" with UV-protection the pictures lot some of the "wow" effect... What do you do in regards to framing? Personally I'm a bit tempted to not using glas...
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 4 месяца назад
Very much a question of personal taste and how the print will be lit. I use normal glass at home and the room lighting only causes any issues for very short people [there are none here...] ;-) Not using glass is OK with some media, but obviously affects prints in the longer term, with dust and atmospheric contaminants - which if you were going to the bother of incorporating UV protection, rather defeats things... One of the reasons I often us baryta style papers is the slightly deeper blacks and reduced impact of glazing. Just remember that far fewer people ever consider it a problem, than people doing the printing - unless you insist on pointing it out to them ;-)
@hansholck5982

@@KeithCooper, yeah lighting really do a big difference :) Baryta sounds very reasonable, will give it a go :) And yes, us photo/print people tends to look differently on pictures 🤣

Quick Q, does the weight of the paper make much difference, I seem to prefer over 200gsm, 240+ if possible on my glossy photo papers

Thanks Keith, question, should we print with the printer's maximum resolution when printing in A2 format? Do the gradients better manage dark tones less dark?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 5 месяцев назад
No is my simple answer ;-) However, see this about resolution www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-sc-p900-printer-review/ and this about why best may not be 'best' www.northlight-images.co.uk/black-and-white-printing-with-the-p700/ Results extend to some other printers [such as the P5300] but may differ slightly for others
@widise
@widise 5 месяцев назад
@@KeithCooper Thank you Keith... This is what I had noticed on different printers 1440 dpi is for me one of the best options marketing tends to run towards very high resolutions sometimes useless
