Doing a skillion/shed/mono slope 6/12 pitched roof with dimensional lumber for rafters on 24x24 cottage. The 3.5x16 32 foot I joist are 134$ vs 75$ for x2 2x12 16 feet and 8 foot 2x12. I was planning on putting a middle bent in timber frame in the center of 31'2" foot span. Got 70 psf snow loads. I want to leave rafters exposed so need to insulate outside of of sheeting. Half the floor space in in widow area for solar gain.
We work with our clients and the designs they bring us to give them the healthiest, most comfortable and efficient version of what they want. Making that space accessible changes envelope details and requires more energy to heat and cool the space too. At the end of the day it's their money and they ended up with a beautiful home!
I have heard that certain jurisdictions in Canada do not allow an unvented attic to be built (by unvented I mean that all the insulation is on the attic floor and there are no eave, gable or ridge vents). However, in rural locations it is recommended that unvented attics be used because of the risk for wildfire embers possibly being blown into the attic. Do you know if codes in Canada allow unvented attics (or maybe, which jurisdictions don't)?
