The carport is too expensive for me. I can build something with a lot less expense if I just call up the lumber mill and get some timbers and boards, get limestone from the mine, and make my own roofing tiles. (The larger pieces of limestone are for the foundation, and you cook the small pieces in a coal furnace to make lime, crush them, add water, and let it sit for a week or so, then you mix the slaked lime with screened soil and you have crazy strong mortar that self-heals cracks.) Roofing tiles are dead simple to make, and if you use a spanish tile kiln to fire them, You can make enough tiles for the roof in 2 firings. If you bathe the tiles in a wood-ash and ochre slurry before firing, they will not be porous.

Depends on how you value your time....I'm sure what ur talking about would be nice...and something to be proud of...but spending a year building a 26X18 building seems a misappropriation of my time when I can put a "movable structure" in on the farm and have it for a lifetime. For the price ya can't beat what ya get my brotha

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I guess that makes sense, But in my context I only have one site for a building. So it doesn't need to move. Most of my land is going to fruit trees. Our local climate has changed dramatically from temperate humid to warm-temperate with heavy rainfall. 10 years ago, it would snow from Oct to March. It hasn't snowed at all this year. About the only thing that does well anymore is trees. I have a blacksmithing shop on a low ridge and right behind that the low ridge continues for about 20 feet giving me space for 1 building. The only other high spot on the whole property is occupied by my house and the vegetable garden. All the rest of the ground is soggy. I plan to use the new building to create a new kind of tractor and implements for the new conditions. I'm thinking rice is going to become the new cash crop shortly, and rice equipment is not made anywhere in the US. It's all imported and very expensive because of shipping.

@@donutman942 I didn't even tell you the crazy part. It's gonna run on any gas, liquid, or solid fuel in a modular combustion chamber. If you are using propane but you run out, just swap some minor parts and you can switch to run on veg oil.

Love how you’re often open about costs and prices. Many RU-vid’rs promise to tell ya all about it, keep stirring around the pot and tell you in fact nothing worth full. Love the channel dude!! Keep it up 👍🏼 Greetings from France 🇫🇷

Josh is trying to help folks get a realistic understanding of what it cost to go from woodland to pasture...and a setup for cattle. It is a ton of work. Both he and Mrs. still work full time...investing about everything into the property. However, he is careful what he invests...like the fencing...costs a lot more, lasts 50 plus years, too. They got the mobile home cheap, but, made a beautiful home out of it. When they decide to build a main house, it can sure bring in rental income...or as a possible tenant house. A good stand of cattle needs constant watching after....cows are way too curious, and can get hurt or die easily.

Michael Cook You said that Beautiful. We are at the very beginning of starting a little homestead raising chickens 🐓 and fruit and vegetables. With the input and ideas Josh’ brings to the channel about costs and prices you get a nice idea of what he does and how that compares to ourselves. As I said, not many RU-vidrs are open about money. That’s what I appreciate a lot. 👍🏼

Josh, never use the insulation you were describing in your garage, I'm in Tn so similar weather, I was talked into that stuff in my 50x100 building and within 3 years it disintegrated, you would touch it and it would fall to pieces. We had to replace all the wall insulation with thicker quality insulation and the roof still has the thin stuff and it's all hanging with flakes of it constantly dropping on everything. I now realize our builder just wanted to put more money in his pocket, just a heads up on your new building, love the videos. Woooo!!

I got both a carport 21x21 and a 26x37 garage with 2 10 foot roll up doors and its 12ft tall walls. Paid just a little over $10k 3 years ago. Main regret is not getting a slab for both. Unfortunately for the carport our local metal mart sells a full galvanized 6 inch c perlin kit for just under $900. Would of liked that just because its 4 corner post and that's all. For the barn I do want to put walls on the side and in the back build some shelfs all the way up for storage you are right it's never big enough barn when you start building a 100+ acre farm. I am building another 20x20 roof for other storage material in the next month. I will be using the perlin instead. Reduces the amount of post I can hit with the tractor! P.s. trying to follow your footsteps with starting a farm in the future but with Longhorns instead! Who knows that might be some good RU-vid channel content possibility!! Best of luck for you wishing all your plans come to life. I'm tired of all the negative people who talk down on people that work hard

We put up a 60x80 poll barn with concrete floor under half of it with a dividing wall . Heated half so fully insulated for working on equipment the rest was cold storage. It was full in less than a year. It doesn't matter how big you build you'll find junk to fill it. Never keep it over 40 unless we were working on something. When my brother sold the farm it was the only building left standing.

Recently had one priced near NC coast for my boat and tractor, have to find another company. I priced a engineered building for 150 mph wind load, 40' x 50' with 12' legs, vertical sheeting with the R-9 roof and wall insulation, 2 insulated 10'x12' doors and 1 man door, 4" slab. Their website advertises that building with horizontal sheeting, 4" slab, no insulation, 2 8'x8' doors and man door for approx. $18k installed. The building I wanted came back priced at $44k. They wanted well over double advertised price for larger insulated bay doors, R-9 insulation, 12' legs instead of 8' legs and vertical sheeting instead of horizontal.

Sometimes you can call the local carport distributors and ask if they have any “demo” models left over and you can get those for half off! We set two connex’s and put a carport between them. Supper economical way to have secure and dry storage. Only issue is fabrication of ventilation for the connex’s and power hookups.

Had a metal carport added at the end of house extending the enclosed garage. Not enclosed. Cost $5,000 and is worth it. It is huge, can park three vehicles. Rated for 200 mph winds. Know what you mean about metal frames. Bent one of mine with the bucket on the tractor not paying attention. Like how you do things on a budget, work with what you have, don't overextend yourself.

I just finished a garage last year. I build the building by myself from wood. It's 28 x32 and lumber was around $14,000 but what real drove the price up was the concrete. It cost twice what I had budgeted for. It is the hidden cost that bits you in the rear. That and building inspectors.

Definitely insulate the bigger building. Those things tend to sweat.in our humidity. It's no fun to have it raining inside your shop. I would also warn people against using the warehouse style metal roll up garage doors they sell with these buildings. If you plan to heat or cool the building you will quickly hate them. There is no way to make them air tight and they transmit heat and cold very well.

I'm not too far from you (Albemarle). I built two 30'x40' buildings (each with a side door, two windows and two rollup doors) with insulation on a 30'x110' 4" 3000 psi slab for right at $30K. That price included grading, concrete finishing and building erection. I have vertical roof panels but horizontal siding (like yours). You have nicer big doors (mine are non-insulated rollups). My insulation is the "bubble" type you mentioned. The insulation does seem to work okay. The buildings were erected (once the concrete cured for a few weeks) over two days in 2016 and have held up extremely well. I keep my three tractors (Kubota 4701, Mahindra 4025 and John Deere 850) plus all the implements in there as well as other farm supplies, a John Deere Gator, my son's Miata and a host of other "crap" that shows up when you have storage Wish I could post a picture of the buildings to show you what $30K buys you.

Neat idea for these, they just dont work here in the northern midwest sadly. We have to build everything to handle 36inches of snow and 100mph winds. A 26x 40 would have to have a foundation, 3x as many trusses, and probably 2x as many uprights. They sell those carports here cheap, they dont hold up but maybe a couple winters at best.
