Just gotta say Mike, all these videos you've been putting out over the years have been incredibly helpful. I've been chasing stripers on Beaver Lake the last couple years and your tips on where to find shad, how to throw a 6ft net, how to keep the shad, and where to find stripers in each season have taken a lot of skunks off my boat.

On a future video could you possibly speak to reasons your like to use the Airmar transducers over the ones that may come with the Simrads, Lorances's, etc.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Sure. Basically, the side and down scan transducers that come included are great, but the 2D sonar (CHIRP, 83khz, 200Khz,etc) is entry level by today’s standards. Airmar offers a full range and much higher end transducers. More powerful, quieter (cleaner), with higher quality elements. For what the included transducers cost they are amazing, especially compared to transducers just 10 years ago, but if you want the highest quality results Airmar transducers are pretty incredible.

Hi mike , Im thinking of upgrading my fishfinder but im quite indecise of which transducer and screen I should buy. My type of fishing is jigging, I jig mostly between 50m til 200m.But sometimes I do some deep dropping till the 400m. I was thinking of buying or the SIMRAD NSS7,NSS9 or the Furuno gp 1971f ,cant decide which one , and for the transducer I was thinking of the B175M Chirp-ready Titled Element. Could you help decide which I should get?and if my options are good?And another question, does a tilted thu hull underperform compared to a standard thu hull transducer?being both 1kw and same frequencies.Because I read this on simrads site "However, tilted-element transducers may be susceptible to performance loss due to external factors" Best Regards Chris

HI MIke. Got a question for you. I was watching your video on shallow trolling in Raritan Bay. I believe you were trolling a mojo jig with a Maja spoon as the trailer. Could you tell me what your setup was? I think it was braid with a line counter, but not sure. I fish in the mid-Hudson valley on the Hudson and not really looking to spend $200 plus on kick-ass 4/0 reel but looking for a recommendation on something a little more versatile and reasonable for possible wire and/or braid and mostly trolling in 15-35 feet of water. The sad part is that I splurged and bought 4 great rods from Tony M. So yes, this a counter intuitive question. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Love your videos and can’t get enough. I hooked up with Joey that you recommended and he made me a sweet custom metal fabrication for my hybrid boat. Thanks again, Will.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Hey brother! I use 30lb mono for trolling. The mojo gets the spoon down so you won’t need wire or braid. The shock absorber is great too. You drop less fish. You can use your regular bait reels. Here is the combo I use amzn.to/2PW5FJ1. I use line counters because I want total control and remove guess work but most guys don’t. I have had hit and miss results with different brand line counters. I just switched to one with the pulley completely exposed and so far they are good. 👍👍

Mike, I'm fairly new at fishfinders, and have appreciated your Dummies vids! Learned lots. However, they are all deep, clear water. My fishery is mostly shallow: DEEPEST is 18'. Average probably 6'. and FILLED WITH GRASS--hydrilla, etc. up to surface (GA/FLA Lake). In fact, if the depth is less than 12' summer grass comes up to surface. Any experience or recommendations for setups/use with this type fishing?

Hi Mike, love these videos explaining how to maximize use of all our gadgets. Quick question. I have a CC with 2 NSS Evo2 12" displays, a BSM-1 sonar module, and a B164 20degree transducer. Recently i've been losing the network from the BSM to the NSS displays so I lose my echo. I learned from one of your videos that the NSS displays can drive the transducer themselves so I plugged my transducer right into one display and it worked. Is there any advantage to having the transducer run through a BSM module vs directly to the display? Also, if I were to upgrade to a B175HW that would be able to plug right into the display as well correct?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Yes and yes. You can leave the transducer plugged directly to the display. The sonar module built in is better than the BSM1. You will also be able to upgrade to 175 amzn.to/2VhdytA. But if you’re using side scan you can’t use a CHIRP setting on the 175 simultaneously. Just use a fixed frequency if you want to use both together

Mike Smedley - can you possibly assist us and provide a response to this post? Thank you
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
The 275 has really been incredible for Simrad displays especially compared to the 265. I have had both. I don’t see depths like yours very often of course but the many commercial fishermen I talk to all like the 275 over the 265. Power isn’t an issue with CHIRP like older fixed frequency transducers. 1000watts is huge for this CHIRP unit. The High wide has been excellent in depths to around 300ft, but will work deeper. When you mark bottom in the deeper applications but start to lose fish returns your low band will do a great job for you. 👍👍👍

I work closely with both Simrad AND Airmar and they say there are differences in the components, but they can’t really say WHY one is better than the other for Simrad displays. There are lots of anomalies like that that I see or hear about all the time to be honest. It might be the opposite on a Garmin with a different processor. I had both with a BSM3 CHIRP processor on evo2 and evo3 and the 275 was so much nicer to use. Don’t really know why. If you never saw the 275 you might love the 265 🤷🏻‍♂️. I wish I had a better answer for you. Hope this helps a little at least.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Fantastic response. Very much appreciated. Looks like the 275 is next level up. Sounds like Chirp technology is an efficient use of power. Do you think the S5100 module is worth installing for my usage (2 x EVO3S + Tm275HLW) trolling in depths up to 150m? Would the S5100 module be at all beneficial for fishing bays up to 30m depth, chasing snapper?

Can I combine transducers? I have installed a garmin GT8HW and planning to get another transducer for the clearvu and side vu, mostly offshore fishing. I only have one chartplotter. Any recommendations?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
I don’t know much about Garmin. It’s no problem with the Simrad’s and Lowrance. Unless you have an entry level model display you probably have the ports to connect both.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks for your quick response!! i have the 1243xsv display. Wasnt cheap… so betting will work ok. So the current in-hull transducer I have it’s “high wide”, should I be looking to get a transducer with a mid/narrower frequency?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
What depths do you fish?

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS inshore to at least 500’. With my current boat I cannot go beyond that.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
The HW is great till 300’ and ok till around 500’. A Medium CHIRP will be better deeper than that. A low is better for ALOT deeper.

Do you have any frequency interference with two ducers?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 3 года назад
Very rarely with the Evo3’s and only with older transducers. I get more interference from other boats getting too close than my own.

lowrance does not have that option anymore- I have a cheap hook 2 and love the downscan on it and i think I waisted my money on side scan since i cant figure it out or it makes too many mistakes. regular sonar is not good either it is ok at best..

Which option? Dual sonar?

wide cone . I only use downscan at 455khz good up to 9 mph but I stay under 5mph.

The Carbon and Live can run any Airmar up to 1Kw including wide cones. other HDS displays can also. I’m not familiar with Hook or Elite.

I couldn't find a fish under my transducer if it slapped me in the face. Maybe because I've been using the freshwater setting in saltwater. Or I leave my brain at the dock.
