One of Chopin's most priceless performance remarks is at the beginning of this Nocturne - "sotto voce". Just like that : not a girlish "piano" , not an ambivalent "mezzo forte" , not even meaty forte ( the last thing you want here is an "opera" voice for this melody ).It effectively bars all over-the-top cheap and showy "expressive emotions" -- no eye rolling allowed , no hair flailing, no hands flying , no sobs , no visible tears.... A musical equivalent of the famed British " keeping a stiff upper lip " this "sotto voce" gives us the right sense of what this piece is about .Just as Chopin's 2nd sonata this nocturne deals directly and openly with such tragic subjects as death, loss and grief ... except , here you are allowed to leave personal comments. 2nd sonata is a depiction of all those things , this Nocturne is a commentary- or an epitaph.....the fifth movement that would come after the Finale ...If you ever visit La Madeleine in Paris ( Chopin's parish church where his funeral was held on October 30th ) think about this Nocturne , OK?
PS. Talking about parallels between Rachmaninoff and Chopin works , don't you think that "doppio movimento" part ( last pages ) sounds ominously like Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableau E flat Minor Op39?

The part at 4:13 makes makes you cry twice. The first when you hear it, and the second when you try to play it.

I feel she plays the section you mention too fast. It's actually the exact melody as the opening hidden inside the fireworks, but the way she plays it it becomes a bit lost. I do love the way she plays the octaves leading into it. Very subtle and difficult to do.

"People often complain that music is too ambiguous, that what they should think when they hear it is so unclear, whereas everyone understands words. With me, it is exactly the opposite, and not only with regard to an entire speech but also with individual words. These, too, seem to me so ambiguous, so vague, so easily misunderstood in comparison to genuine music, which fills the soul with a thousand things better than words. The thoughts which are expressed to me by music that I love are not too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite" - Mendelssohn

I have been also searching for a long time a version in which there is such a rhythm independence within the right hand (Arrau tries to make it sound like that with the rubato but not with real splitting). It is also very nice how she emphasises the notes in the left hand which correspond to the bass at the beginning... I think this version is the best one at replicating in the end which has been sung at the beginning :)

I have read so many comments on this beautiful Chopin nocturne, people critiquing her performance, with special focus on her interpretation of the Doppio Movimento section. Although I am fully aware that mine is but a small voice amongst the many, I do wish to share my opinion on the matter and give listeners another perspective to see this from. Firstly, yes, she plays the Doppio section too fast, and the difference between a recording of hers and, say, Artur Rubinstein's, is highly noticeable. However, I believe that both interpretations are commendable in their own rights. Rubinstein's more reserved performance gives the image (to me), of a deep anguish trapped within, a scream of sorrow held back and battled with internally. This performance lacks the reservation that Rubinstein's does, and so tells a different story. It takes the agitato marking very seriously, creating the sensation of agitation within the listener. When the the section reaches its climax, she lets fly with the emotions, the crashing C 7th chord stabbing directly at the heart. As I said before, these performances are interpretations; who are we to say what is the right way to play this piece? Valentina Lisitsa is an artist, and like all artists, must take a new direction in order for her art form to truly progress. I respect that some listeners might not agree with what I have said, as I have not set out to change what you think, just show you what I think. If you wish to ignore this interpretation in favour of others, be my guest. Just try see from a different perspective.

I have to say though that double speed section is what I’d like the most about her playing. I like this entire piece and I think out of the 50 other versions that I’ve listened to this is the one that I relate to the most. That section is pure chaos. It’s almost like everything‘s falling apart all around you and, you’re running and there’s just nothing to save you. You have no idea where to go. You’re lost it’s chaotic. And then, as it calms down to the haunting ending it’s almost like you’re accepting the fate of death. The song doesn’t depress me. I think it’s beautiful and hunting.

Gracias Valentina

Well, in my personal experience, the first few chords seem so mild, so gently and sensitively sad, like the sound of tears dropping down and falling on the surface out of grief of losing a lost one, the second part I find more tragic and very agrily dramatic/tragic, as if one cannot accept this perceived loss and has to express this in a volatile manner. In the historical romantic context this can be explained by the loss of Chopin's home country of Poland, which he longs to return to, but no longer can, it is simply, tragically beautiful

Wonderful piece of music, Rubinstein's recording has the perfect balance throughout, in my opinion, but this performance is heartfelt also.

I have watched this video countless times, and it invokes the same emotional response every time. Beautiful composition by Chopin, and exquisitely played by Valentina! She is a joy to watch, I am currently learning this piece, and many is the doppio movimento section difficult!

Like the description of this video there is something about this interpretation that is really hard to put in into the words. This is the best version I've ever heard (THERE I SAID IT), and I've heard a lot of versions most of which are played by the dead titans of the past. I can also play this piece badly with my own hands. This makes me no authority of course. I'm just saying this is a really special interpretation, and you should take a good listen to it.

A truly commendable and beautiful rendition (though I'm far from an expert in this field) This is so much more than just notes on a page, there is pain here. More than other nocturnes for sure. Chopin has found a way to express emotion in a way no other composer has; it is perfection expressed through the notes on a page.

This is surprisingly and wondrously excellent! It really elevated my opinion of Lisitsa! I would call this performance a treasure. I already loved this nocturne, and this rendition rivals the best I have ever heard. Thank you, thank you, Valentina!!!

I used to not like this version because I thought her ending was rushed, but now I love it. She plays the doppio movimento at perfect double pace while being able to have a clear top voice and strong base voice which is very difficult when playing extremely quickly. Her peddling is also amazing, as she keeps it unmuddled, but still leans away from making the notes too staccato. Furthermore, despite the fast pace, the pain and beauty of this piece are still overwhelming brought to life. Overall amazingly executed, this is one of my favorite interpretations of this piece.

It's because someone was able to reach your soul. More than a century ago a man felt something and put it to music. Now a woman interpreted the music, and touched the souls of her audience... we are touched, and so we weep.

TO ME THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING NOCTURNES BY CHOPIN; HIS PAIN, HIS DESPAIR, INTIMATELY EXPRESSED ON THE PIANO, BUT WITH OUTSTANDING MUSICIANSHIP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@jpianod

I have always felt the same way you do when I was your age about the way people think of music. I am 19 and a serious pianist. One of the reasons why there are people like this is because there are too many who think of music as entertainment. While it can be used for entertainment, this is not its true purpose. Music is really a common language that all humans have. It is one of the ways in which we say 'I am alive and my life has meaning". The job of musicians is not to entertain, but to heal.

Ouço essa peça a meses e ela sempre me leva às lagrimas misturadas a impropérios: Como pode um $#%¨$¨$ fazer uma peça tão bela? Ela me leva para à nuvens, me joga no chão, me chuta o saco, crava uma faca nas costas, espremes os neurônios, dilacera a alma, sangra o coração e eu me sinto vivo. Devo ter ouvido todas as outras interpretações postadas no RU-vid, essa eu considero a melhor. Grande Valentina!

Without a doubt my favorite and in my opinion the most moving interpretation of this magnificent piece. I've studied and played this piece for years, and I'm still stunned every time I watch this video. Everyone is of course entitled to their opinion, but I've seen the other videos posted (Rubinstein and Yundi Li included) and I don't think they come close to this. The Doppio movimento is absolutely breathtaking! The words mean "double movement" or literally twice as fast as the previous sections, and the section is also marked "agitato," which of course means agitated. I think Valentina nails this better than anyone else I've yet to hear. Bravissima!
