Ace was definitely the "gateway " guitarist. Probably influenced as many or more guitarist as EVH or Hendrix in his own way. What 10 year old boy doesn't like the sound of electric guitar and stuff blowing up?! Thanks again Dave!
Wow, this is exactly the rhythm guitar parts that I love to listen to since I was a fifteen-seventeen boy. Now I am 49 and I listen to a lot of hard and metal music, but these rhythm guitar parts still are amazing to me
Been a huge KISS fan since '75. As a 13yo and hearing ALIVE!, it hooked me. Ace was my first guitar hero. Him and Paul really made me want to learn to play guitar. Now at 61yo (yikes) I still love to play old KISS songs. I always pick up some great tips from your vids. Keep up the great work.
Anton Fig kicks butt on drums on Ace's 1st solo album! I also love "Snow Blind" and "Wiped Out" from that great collection! Ace and DADGAD? I can't wait to hear it!
A fan since 1977. I was far too young, LOL Ace is the reason I always thought the shape of a Les Paul was the shape of an electric guitar, and why the first "real" guitar I bought was a Les Paul. Still have it tuned down half a step!
Nice job, Dave! Ben Lacy and I are huge Ace fans! We used to drive from Lexington, KY to Nashville when we played NAMM shows. Ben would play my Martin Backpaker and we would go through all the old kiss stuff and the radio never came on! I really love Ace's version of "Do Ya", "Space Truckin'". My favorite original of Ace's is "Ozone" I probably listen to the Ace solo album once or twice a month
It always surprised me that Ace's tone doesn't get the recognition that it deserves. That tone was the spark that ignited my interest in rock as a very young kid.
I really appreciate this look at Ace's chord work. I've been a fan since the late 70's, KISS was my first concert at age 12 in 1979 and though I have pretty much parted ways with Gene and Paul and the newer "pretend" KISS, Ace is still the (space) man! Actually I'm opening an auto detailing shop this spring and it's gonna be called..."Ace Auto Detailing" in honor of the man himself. Imo Ace is one of the top rock and roll stylists of all time. how many notes do you have to hear to know it's him? 2-3 maybe? his bending and vibrato are benchmarks for any player and his simple but groovy chord work is rock riffing 101. oh lastly "Fractured III" is one of my all time fave Ace tunes. An absolutely beautiful song! Thank you, sir!
Hard times. Learning guitar has been hard times for me but I love it. I only hated KISS because a close friend of mine would not stop talking about the but I grew to love them. Deffentally classic.
I really miss those simple but immediate riffs and licks. Flash and speed and technical can be fun but it’s so rarely memorable for me, except for the pioneers like YJM, Lynch, Lee and Ed. Ace is so underrated, thank you for these vids!
Love Ace, always did.... Paul Stanley once said that had Ace not been so lazy, he would have become one of the all-time Greats.... but imho, he already is ! I don't know one single fellow guitarist who doesn't enjoy his playing 🙂
Dave - it's so interesting how I hear Alex Lifeson in some of Ace's stuff, but given Alex probably watched Kiss from the sidelines so many nights, It's I'm hearing Ace in Lifeson's stuff. Thanks for this - makes 'rawk' guitar a little more accessible to the average player instead of billions of notes per second.
Funny how you put up this video this week. Ace just released his new video of "10,000" volts. (Album comes out in Feb.) Yeah, The PPV was all about Gene and Paul. Even Tommy said this at the end of the PPV. He did not say in a negative way. Just meant as if what they did for Kiss. Yeah, It should had been a celebration of the entire career of Kiss. I get about Ace and Peter, But Bruce Kulick and the late Eric Carr was never mentioned also. I mostly watched it cause they have been my fav band since I was 5 years old. (54 now.) If you not heard Ace's new single BTW. Its on his YT channel.
14:23 - Calling To You is a rework of song called Megaforce that Tod Howarth recorded with his band 707. Technically not a Frehley song. Same with Fallen Angel at 16:14. Again, that's a Howarth song, just FYI.
After he left, Kiss just wasn't as good. Gotta say their reunion tours over 20 years ago with the original members was stellar. I think my fav. part of his is tbe climbing guitar solo on Love Gun. There's a lot of bad blood between them. I'm not surprised it didn't happen. It was time for them to hang it up. Between Paul's voice being shot and using backing tracks, it was time to hang it up.
Very awesome David! Thanks for posting! Question; didn't Tod Howarth write Calling To You and Falling Angel or was those Ace & Tod collaborations? Love your channel!
Man I remember in Jr High 4 of us fighting over who got to BE Criss. Peter was NOT all of our favorite. Peter WAS great but Ace was MY guy for instance but Billy had this stool in his room & we'd be SO stoned & have Alive SO cranked that it'd just be cooler to be on THAT stool. We'd play all for sides over & over but that SECOND SIDE....that opening drum BOOM BOOM right after after the guitar line on C'mon & Love Me or after each You Got ! on Nothin to Lose & of course Parasite & She...seemed like Side Two got 4-5XX as much play...we had gone to that Bicentennial show & we were all in The Army.....we all loved ACDC & Zeppelin & VH too & even the Skynyrd & ZZ Topp & Stones & on & on but being young.. ..& wasted....shout to Eric Carr for one of the FEW listenable later songs without the ORIGINALS...in those days..KISS was OUR band & EVERYBODY either REALLY dug em or REALLY hated them. So cool that Billy's parents were never home after school....GREAT old days made possible by KISS Alive & 1.5s.
aces stage presence was part of what made that band worth watching.. fake frehley is just boring.. boring costume and guitar...no improv.. not even a spotlight moment where he could really step out... little elvis is a great musician but isnt the catman.. no matter how long theyve worn the image ,the soul and mojo of those images arent there like the real deal... IMPOSTERS !! glad I saw them several times way back in the day.. Ace influenced so many players.. As many other players did.. I find a lot of players over the years who comment on learning the whole alive lp all the way through... we can name several bands we did that as well with but point is - ace frehley was one of them hands down... people tend to forget he was setting that standard of followers BEFORE van halen.. excellent video dave !!
Gene & Paul are EGO junkies they suck !! 1 last show with a couple of songs that would have been a classy way to bow out. Now they’re just a Tribute band, but hopefully done for good !
