Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Chicago. I've had a number of requests to feature more of the late-great Terry Kath's music, along with requests to hit some classic Chicago tracks, so this lesson is long overdue - let's dive in!
The chords and rhythm-based guitar parts in this lesson were pulled from three classic Chicago albums, including the Chicago Transit Authority debut, along with Chicago II and Chicago III. This includes sections from songs such as I'm A Man, It Better End Soon, South California Purples, Free, Poem 58, Make Me Smile, Movin' In, and much more!
Aside from the great rhythm work happening in this episode, we're also tackling one of Terry's chord-based secrets, as he loved playing around with minor seventh chords in his music, and this lesson features plenty of m7 work - including different ways to play this chord, first by using a Hendrix-approved thumb wrap, along with the jazz/funk fretting method, traditional fingerings, and more!
Needless to say, if you're a Terry Kath fan, a fan of classic late-1960s/early-1970s music by Chicago, a player searching for some new chord-based rhythm guitar ideas/riffs to play around with, would like to tackle more funk/soul/blues/R&B guitar music, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I hated Chicago when I was young but as I got older it just sounded better and better. I'm with you on Terry Kath. Such a great player.

Excellent! Terry was the Steve Cropper of the north. He had a lot of drive. He brought Chicago to the forefront of rock. Still dig that period the most. Great songs of the times.

Above all his technical gifts, Terry had such a Soulfulness that draws me to his playing and vocals.

Poem 58 is one of my favorites of those deep cuts. I have always been the same as what you described, I love the Terry Kath years of Chicago the best, and no disrespect to the 80's pop version.

My favorite years for Chicago was when Terry Kath was alive. I am happy that I got to see him play. I am also lucky that I got to play in a 8 piece band starting in 1970 and play many of those songs. The first one I ever learned was Make Me Smile. Have to disagree with you on that one. When I figured it out I heard Cm in the 3rd pos. and you can clearly see him use that in his videos and Ab on 4. I see you have the loose wrist, that is how I played also. It was some of the best days of my band life, playing Chicago, BS&T, Sly, Santana. A really great time to be alive.

Terry Kath was amazing. Love that you did this one. I always had a hard time hearing/learning Terry's guitar parts with all the great horns and everything else going on in Chicago's music.

I have done composite arrangements all my life. I often play a solo act, and it's needed to fill out the sound. Love it that you explain it nicely. I've had people who don't like it and others who really dig it.

You got a gift for pitch and being able to play by ear and figure it out on the fretboard and correct transcription mistakes, it's always good to try different things. Appreciate ya!

I really enjoyed this, especially the deep dive on the deep cuts from the early albums. You do a great job capturing Terry's aggressive and passionate rhythm style. He is definitely one of the finest rhythm players ever. I play guitar in a Chicago tribute band in Dallas and it is a blast and huge challenge trying to cover these parts. One minor feedback point is that the opening chord in "Better End Soon" is actually a C7#9 played across the middle four strings (at frets 2-4) and not a Cm7, although the two chords are very close harmonically and sound very similar. Thanks again, and great work!

Some great insights into Terry’s playing! Some monster solos included with some of those simplified chord progressions as well! Even 25 or 6 to 4 is played in octaves instead of the power chords every one plays on that song, he definitely had his own style which made him great.

Hi David, very good lesson. Terry Kath was awesome. Coming up listening to Chicago during my middle school years was one of the highlights of my youth. It seemed they were always around in those early days. I would see them regularly in concert, their albums always had great cover art and some with posters. And they seemed to be one of the early rock bands to have published books of their album material. I still have those songbooks, up until Chicago IV. I, like you miss those early CTA-Kath years.

Heart in pieces is by far my favorite Chicago song. Tim Feehan did a great version of it on his 1990 release Full Contact.

Peter Cetera and David Foster took the band over. This happened before Terry even passed. This was the reason for him stepping away and doing his own thing. The Terry Kath Experience is a great doc. Think it's still free on RU-vid.

My first favorite band! I was a teenager when Chicago 5 came out, and I really went all in to learn Danny Seraphine’s drum parts and Terry Kath’s licks. Btw, David, I swear you are the FIRST person on YT to explain/show the intro to ‘Free.’ Have never succeeded in finding it anywhere. Thank you!

Terry Kath is criminally underrated. Just an incredible player. You're right about the band . Since Terry's death they went chick ballad.🤮 Just listen to look away... You'll lose your lunch in .5 sec. Terry Mark was a fantastic player and more people should know about him. Thx Dave, keep up the great work 🤘

Nonsense. Whenever I read the truly awful phrase 'criminally underated' I absolutely cringe. There is no way on this planet Terry Kathy is underated. He's not that well known perhaps but that's an entirely different thing.

Love this. I remember reading that Miles was blaming his wife Betty of sleeping with Hendrix. Not sure how that played out, but there's my 2 cents.

The Spencer Davis version of I’m a Man sounds like they are playing a 7 sharp 9 rather than a minor 7 in the intro.

I'm A Man has a riff which sounds like "Seek And Destroy" from Metallica. Metallica were notorious riff ripoffs :D
