When I was 13 I had a copy of "Seasons" on cassette. One day while on the bus ride to school a kid asked what I was listening to. I'll never forget the look on his face when he put my headphones on. Sheer terror. He never asked what I was listening to ever again and I've never stopped listening to Slayer since. I'm thankful to have seen them live a couple of time before they disbanded. Great lesson Dave.
Their album Hell Awaits is really the only 1 that resembles Mercyful Fate... The rest is all their own, you know, speed, aggression, VIOLENCE kinda stuff...
My daughter is 15 and she loves your channel. She's learned so many of her favorite tunes from you. This morning she asked why there's no tutorial on RU-vid for any Gruntruck tunes. I told her we should ask you to do one. She wants to learn Machine Action but isn't proficient at working things out on her own yet. Maybe there's more Gruntruck fans out there than we know! Cheers and thanks for the killer lessons.
@@amyhurley4461 Nope! Gruntruck (actually from Seattle!) was a Grunge era band that mixed in a lot more Metal than their contemporaries. My years loved their cd "Push" from the moment I heard it and it still holds up to this day. Check it out!
Awesome lesson Dave! As a musician your ear can tell that Slayer uses an overabundance of Augmented 4th intervals and hints of Locrian in their music. I feel they are masters of dissonance and just an overall awesome band. Got to see them on their South of Heaven tour in San Antonio, TX when I was in high school and again in Austin, TX several years ago. Slayer is one band I will never forget seeing.
Well said! I love the way Slayer makes their ugly and dissonant chordplay still very musical and somehow melodic! Plus I love their classic parallel Perfect Fourth "Slayer Harmonies."
@@amyhurley4461 No raining blood at both shows. I'm guessing Texas is too conservative to allow such gore at concert venues. However, throwing mud at concert goers and bands during a rainy afternoon at Lalapalooza in Austin, TX several years ago was ok?
Great lesson David. Your video took me back to 1993. I was a young budding guitarist of 14. I remember sitting in the waiting room of the orthodontist office listening to Seasons in the Abyss on tape though my Walkman. Lol !!! Keep up the great lessons.
great job, great timing with Halloween looming, you surely enjoyed this episode. I heard 'Seasons' early on (there were hints), and I knew it was to later poke it's head out,, that clean part of the intro, dissonance and the layered, inter-laced guitar lines, great job!
SLAYER !!! Thank you so much. I really appreciate it that you follow up on requests (I did this request this too). Totally agree with you on the dissonant chords / dark mood. This band wrote some amazing songs and brought it live too. I was hooked as from Show no mercy in 1983 and still listen to them on a daily basis.
Fantastic video David. Slayer was a huge influence on me as a young player. I had no idea what they were doing but as you said it just sounds so evil. One thing I'd love to hear is when you say the chords are implied it would be cool if you could strum the full implied chords in the rhythm of the riff so we can hear what that would sound like. Love your videos man!
213 is probably my favorite Slayer song . Unpopular opinion Devine Intervention is probably my favorite Slayer album . Serenity In Murder is Shredtastic thrash metal. It may be blasphemy but the slower tempos and the groove on Devine Intervention is what got me in to Slayer . Yep I’m definitely more of a casual Slayer fan too .
Divine intervention I think is their best over all album . Clever songwriting, songs sound unique to each other , variety, and it’s almost catchy death metal . Definitely their peak
I love how this channel can go from Journey to friggin' Slayer. It's brilliant and learning the snippets you teach from each band has made me ten times the guitar player i was before discovering you.
The perfect Halloween lesson! Seasons was my favorite album. I'm not a gigantic fan either. But I must admit they were unique. Very powerful sounding band. Lots of great guitar parts.
Hi David, That lead singer used to give me the willies and that evil smile. He would've been a good horror movie actor. I always wondered how they made their music sound so evil. Good stuff David. Peace.
Great stuff, Dave! - Saw Slayer in Poperinge, Belgium in '85. Their first gig on European soil. I guess "changed my life" sounds a little exaggerated, but hell yes, it did! :-)
I was lucky enough to see one of the Week in the Abyss shows, they played 8 bars in 8 nights on the east coast prior to the Seasons tour, all announced the day of. I was driving back from skating at Lansdowne and on the radio - "Slayer One Night Only at Hammerjacks in Baltimore". Full concert rig - so f****** loud, so great
Really strange, I hadn't listened to Slayer in while and put on South of Heaven couple days ago. Was thinking I needed to learn some of the songs of it. Great content as always.
One of my favourite Slayer tracks is, seasons of the abyss. It's not break neck speed, but it's so heavy!! It's got everything in it, weight, dissonance and lyrically, it's a killer!!
I love your show and I hate I have to common to correct you but Slayer started in" Huntington Park" and South Gate. Not Huntington Beach which is nowhere remotely near there. Your show is awesome.sign Fabian Dead.
Darkthrone drummer Fenriz described Slayer, when they first came out, as a "Black Metal" version of Iron Maiden ("Cryonics" waa a mentioned example), including simple face paint. I forgot about that.
The Chords of Pen Rollings, the early punk rock and math rock riffmaster - guitarist from Honor Role / Butterglove / Breadwinner / Loincloth (4 song demo only)?
Pen Rollings also played drums in Ladyfinger and contributed drum work to an obscure, fairly recent project called Bowl Ethereal.... (say it out loud for a laugh!)...
I have been praying (no irony detected with that) for a lesson/dissection of Slayer, giving names to the harmony so I can explain it to my non-guitar player friends.
Love Slayer. The first time I heard chemical warfare in the early 80’s I was hooked. Been listening to them for over 35 years. Great job breaking down the songs.......as usual. How about a chord play of Helloween for Halloween.
Great video Dave and Great to hear some old seasons in the abyss tunes coming through . The two guitarists really complimented each other well and Rick Rubin ..well what more can be said? Have you done any Andy Timmons or Jake E Lee stuff yet ? Keep on Rocking friend
Hey! Be sure to search around on the channel, as there's a few Jake E. Lee lessons and some Andy Timmons too - with more on the way! Thanks and rock on!
It's funny that you played South of Heaven first and that's exactly what I wanted trying to see because the chords sound extra chunky. However, right after I watched how you played it, I went and found a live performance of it and they are definitely not playing it like this. The chords part, I mean. The video I watched was titled: Slayer - South Of Heaven (The Big 4 Tour) [5.1 Surround / 4K Remastered]
I was thinking that too - Glen, Mike Muir, Henry Rollins - those guys are kind of short too though. Paul Gilbert, Greg Koch, Josh Scott (JHS) are all around Davids height. I think Greg Koch is like 6'7" or something. All those guys could play on a really crappy basketball team, I'm sure Danzig could set a mean post.
Seasons is my all time the shows were insane. Dave perfect guitar player Respect. Side note what was the spill the bood shirt i had back in the day I was the only one who had it dude on front with a robe hood spill the blood lyrics on back
I got tendinitis from burning and haven’t been able to play for a month. Slayer wasn’t what I was planning to learn for a new personal lessons, but this was fun to watch.
Dude a buddy of mine was at a Slayer concert and a lot of people had those spiky bands on and- you know how people slam their fists in the air - people were getting hit in the back of the head with those and bleeding, man! …But everyone was so fd up, that nobody cared! …good times back then. Now we have jabs… Crazy! …How far we came! Are you processing your sound, dude! Or is that just the ax and the amp? Sounds really good.
King was goood. Seasons, reminds me of: “ _What is this that stands before me… Figure in black that points at me…_ “ Dude, why is everyone using that brand of guitar? Seems like that’s all I see! Are they really good or something? :)
@@Scottocaster6668 Yeah it seems like everywhere I look, commercials, guys in tutorials, you know? Seems like all I see are PRS guitars. I have an ESP Les Paul but was recently checking out a Schechter Apocalypse and holy shit, that’s a fast neck! Totally not used to it. …Shit, I’m not even used to this Les Paul one. I’ve been using Ibanez my whole life. Take care, bro.
@@sergedenovo2389 I have a Ibanez Jem Jr, 2 strats, a '02 Korean Wolfgang, and now I'm also looking for a shecter. Jeff Loomis has a black strat type that looks Awesome. Not sure what kind, but yeah, I see PRS's everywhere. Must be the in thing but not for me. Be safe brother, have a great weekend!
I enjoyed the lesson David ! But I couldn't help but laugh when you mentioned you towered over Kerry King ! I didn't know your 6' 4'' ! HA HA HA.I met Gary Holt two years ago at Heavy MTL I like Gary's style n playing. Bay Area Thrash Metal!
"we're gonna be safe"..... Haha 😂.... Last words or something like that.... Sounded like a horror film line.... We arent talking about the lyrics... We're saaa... Aaaahhhhhhhh.!, ☠️
My English is bad,why write in German(I 'm from Germany ). Als Ich im Nov 1990 zum ersten Slayers "Live Undead" hörte dachte Ich mit offenem Mund nur:Wie zum Teufel kann nur jemand so schnell Guitare spielen!!!!! Since 1990 Slayer Fan!!!Slayer Fan Forever!!!
I didn’t like Slayer’s image back in 83/84 but the music was definitely intense evil sounding lots of dissonance but great playing Lombardo’s drums Hanneman King’s attack and Araya’s high screams the lyrics were certainly interesting and controversial early fav’s Aggressive Perfector and Chemical Warfare!!!!
