Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #35: Bossa Nova Swing

This lesson is based on recording by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina, recorded on Elis & Tom album from 1974
as well as some later recording made by Oscar Castro Neves who also participated on Elis & Tom album.
The rhythm was originally labeled by Jobim as 'valsa jazz' (jazz waltz). It shows the usage of swing in bossa nova songs. Please note that in swing two eight notes are played approximately as a triplet that consists of a quarter note and an eight note, as indicated above the rhythm box.
Chord on the first beat is followed by a pause, so it is deliberately muted, while the chord played on the third beat is being left for as long as possible, on some occasions even until the next beat, that is played by legato.

hey ive been really diving deep into bossa nova music over the past few months. specifically the music of joao gilberto. i dont know how you choose songs for these lessons but one of my favorite gilberto songs is caminhos cruzados. would you possibly do a lesson for that song in the future? keep up the amazing videos!!!

Amazing! One of my favorite Jobim tunes! Love the Stone Flower version. Speaking of that, any chance you could take a look at Sabiá in the future? Also after learning and studying bossa for so long on piano, I've been learning these songs on the guitar for the past 6 months now and it's helping so much with my understanding and composition knowledge of the style! I have a guitar that works well, but the strings are getting pretty dull. I have no idea when it comes to the world of guitar strings. Do you have any recommendations? Keep hearing about light, normal, or heavy tension. Which would be best for bossa style work? Thanks!

Thank you very much! Yes, Sabia is in my plans as well. As for the tension, generally you would want to use as low as possible tension strings that still don't hit the frets and produce buzz sound while you play. That usually depends on the action (height of the strings above the frets), the lower the strings are more tension is needed to avoid buzz. The scale length also plays the part, but not much since the difference in scale length among guitars is usually small. Generally the larger the scale is the tension of strings will be higher when tuned to the same frequency. The tension also affect the dynamics, the higher the tension are the more volume you can produce. If you are just starting I'd recommend you to go a little lower than usual, until your fingertips harden a bit. Thanks again and stay tuned.

Thank you very much. Any classical guitar will do. Make sure that you try it before you buy. If you don't know how to check it bring some guitar player with you to the shop. You would want to check the materials, craftsmanship, possible defects (warped neck, sticking frets, tuning, etc), playability (how it fits your hands) and the sound of course. Hope that helps.

El término swing tiene dos usos principales. Coloquialmente, se utiliza para describir la calidad propulsora o la "sensación" de un ritmo, especialmente cuando la música provoca una respuesta visceral, como tocar los pies o asentir con la cabeza (ver pulso). Este sentido también se puede llamar "ruco" o “groove”.

I dont understand pretty well the first notation. The first two eight notes are played like a triplet with a silence in between?

That's right, it's the standard notation in swing (jazz). It's usually marked by ♫ = ♩♪, meaning that two eight notes from the score should be played approximately as a triplet containing one quarter and one eight note. Thanks for pointing this out.
