I have been watching the underseventeen World Cup and the US kids are on the tournament run of a lifetime. Absolutely running through countries. In the last 3 games they won by 80+, 90+, 80+ and they are now in the finals. This Current generation of US players in the league might be weak but help is on the way.

Right now, it is just a numbers game. Team U.S.A. draws from a united pool of 333 mio. people, while the european teams are confined to a fraction of the european total population. A united european selection would show team U.S.A where they are really at. Imagine Wemby, Jokic, Luca, Giannis, Sabonis, etc. on one and the same national team.

Some teams can compete closely with the US starters but no team comes within a mile of competing with their bench. Canada is nice and has 2-3 really good players. Same with a few other teams, who have 1-2 excellent players. The US team has 8-9 top notch players and the remaining are just all stars haha.

Tbf, we should be the heavy favorites next Olympics too. Anthony Edwards will be better (entering his prime) Zion will be better (entering his prime barring major injury), Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown. I could keep going. Canada has a good team, but the USA are the clear favorites. Have all the role players you want, teams need players that can take over when needed and get a bucket when necessary. The 08 Redeem Team put Spain away with phenomenal performances by DWade and Kobe…not role players

The top players in the NBA are NOT American. So the modern NBA is dominated by international players. And that was the point of the whole global marketing effort to grow basketball. However, I still believe that Americans can field the best possible TEAMS if they continue their training programs. The problem is the players AND their respective teams -- i.e., will Team USA be able to send their best players and best possible team to compete internationally in FIBA and the Olympics? 'Cause we saw what can happen when they don't!
