How? On ESPN the black talking heads go ham whenever a white coach or GM is hired always either insinuating or flat out saying that the hire is due to white privelage. Yet now the shoe is on the other foot and you have these two guys saying race should have never been brought into this? Like we aren't living in a climate that has major corporations and producers hiring black people to appease it's clients and stay out of the outrage line. Miss me with that noise. Welcome to the white man's world, where no matter how hard you work, how humble and good at your job you Are, people will always pigeon hole your career to your race and/or gender to validate their loss of an opportunity. Just like white men, some are given jobs based on their Looks, in today's society, some black men and women are getting roles and positions based on their looks. Maybe not the majority, but to pretend it doesn't exist, is like white people pretending there aren't a few of us that don't get lucky for our skin color
@@krishnawainright15 he wasn't. That's when keeping it real went wrong lol. Especially since last week RG3 was bragging about having a white wife on Twitter
Maria is a qualified and talented broadcaster. That’s a fact. Rachel has a legit beef with espn if her contract stated she’s got the finals gig. She did not express herself well. I don’t believe she’s prejudiced. I think she’s wounded and responded poorly.
The problem is, when you're wounded, that's when your true feelings come out. It's easy to put the veneer on when things are going well. Nobody says, "Oh, you only got the job because you're black", then can legit say, "Oh, I just said that because I was feeling hurt.". Bullshit, that's how she actually feels and moments like this are when you truly know what's in someone's heart.
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 I agree , Rachel was wounded. I don’t think it’s as cut and dried as you suggest. My understanding is that Rachel said espn was responding to external pressure due to a lack of diversity, and had a knee jerk reaction to replace her with Maria Taylor. Rachel’s delivery was poor for sure. I don’t want come to a strong conclusion about someone based on their worst moments.
@@valthomas9786 But don't you get it? By saying what she said, she's saying that, oh, it clearly can't be because Maria is better than me. It has to be because she's black. What if her colleague said to her, "The only reason you got your job is because Diane Sawyer is your mother-in-law". Btw, Diane Sawyer is her mother-in-law. I'm not making that up. Why is it when Rachel got her job, no one brought up the very obvious STRONG possibility that she got her job due to her celebrity connections? I've said this multiple times now and I'll say it again: While I don't have proof, Rachel's numbers were probably dropping and ESPN was looking to see if they could get a new young thing in front of their male audience to spice up the ratings again. Rachel is almost 50 and performs in a market dominated by men. Did she really think she got her job because of talent?
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 idk mate you took Chris’s own words. People did talk that Rachel got her job cause of her MIL and then you made a guess that numbers were dropping, and reached hard saying espn needed new meat for the male viewers.
As far as I’m concerned I’ll never look at Rachel the same way again. Her words followed by that sorry ass excuse of an apology will always make me look at her and whatever she says (even it’s strictly about basketball) like this 🤨
She didn’t say anything wrong. I’ll never understand when people call out these big companies for being racist, sexist, and two faced, for using their own employees to avoid being held accountable then people like you go after Rachel. If you actually listen to what she said she’s calling out ESPN for being racist and using Maria as a scapegoat by throwing Rachel under the bus all while violating her contract. No one should be pissed at Rachel or Maria, we should all be pissed at ESPN. But clearly that’s not happening
I agree with Chris Broussard as to how The Jump should have dealt with the apology. You'd think that Richard or Perk were the ones at fault with Rachel Nichols calling Maria Taylor a diversity hire.
Same. When I saw RJ and Kendrick Perkins on there with Rachel Nichols, I was kinda surprised and shocked. Like you said, it made it seem like they were at fault, not Maria Taylor.
She didn’t really say she was a diversity hire. She said AFTER they hired her, they were propping her up, at the expense of other people who paid their dues
True, but he was also in a tough position (because of something he wasn’t involved in) & it’s a lot easier for everyone to come at him from behind a screen than be in his shoes on live tv.

What does privacy have to do with the thoughts? The thoughts are wrong and hurtful. Whether private or not, no one told her to think that way and to say that. The privacy breach doesn't absolve her of fault, it just means someone else should probably be in trouble along with her for that breach.
@Jesus Gonzalez you’re reaching like a man reaching for his last breath. No one was saying Bo ended up on that article cover because he was “black.” He ended up on there because he was a freak athlete who played football and baseball at the same time decently. Who is “we” said the same thing? Also, I don’t think Rachel N is racist, she just spoke about what she felt, but Rob still has a point
Agreed, they had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the situation, It was a bad look all the way around, I would've flat out refused to speak on it because it's not my place to insert my opinion on it.
Exactly! It’s much easier said than done to say exactly what you want to say: in the moment, on live TV, inches from the person you’re talking about, who’s higher ranking, in front of the whole ESPN set, & know you’re livelihood is on the line! Those guys were the only ones in those shoes, so it’s easy for everyone else to say what we would’ve done better.
It's amazing to hear a product of nepotism whine about "deserving" a position. It's equally frustrating to see all her black puppets come to her defense. Do any of them remember how she made it her purpose to take shots at Ray Rice years after the incident. How about Mayweather? Worst of all was D Rose, he scored 50 and she's talking about a r@pe case that was dismissed.
Well damn Ray Rice and Floyd have a history of violence against women. The video of Ray punching his girlfriend like that is hard to watch. You have a point with the Derrick Rose thing even though I don't recall saying anything about because I don't remember hearing her say much about it because it was years ago.
Great post, but you could have left Floyd and Ray out of this. Of course she’s going to feel some type of way about documented woman beaters with serious domestic violence abuse acts. But yeah, the Rose incident was bogus on her part
Everyone is an activist for others until they actually have to put some skin in the game and then they fold. Typical of fair weather fake activists. I rather see Maria. Just being honest from a mans perspective.
Her statements were basically diversity and inclusion is cool but only so long as it doesn't affect me, as a rich white entitled lady. ...which is fitting af considering she literally got her job bc she married the son of Diane Sawyer and her father is a higher up in ESPN.
I believe that they were instructed to help talk down the situation, instead of saying what Rod and Chris are saying. The man (Perkins) clearly said he not going to lose his job...
Yeah, and I totally get it. The only problem I have is both Perkins and Rose (Edit: Sorry, Richard Jefferson, not Rose) made millions in the NBA. If you're making $40K a year and you've got 3 mouths to feed, I get it, you're gonna dance and sing like your bosses want you to in order to keep your job and you hope that maybe at one point in your life, when you don't need the paycheck, you can be honest. But Kendrick Perkins is worth $18 mil. Richard Jefferson is worth $50 mil. You'd think they've made enough money where they can put their integrity before making yet another dollar.
This conversation was so on time and I really appreciate you guys perspective. I thought it was just me that thought that no one else should of chimed in to defend Rachel Nichols because it's up to her to stand on her word or to defend it. We look silly coming to her aid when we have ZERO involvement.
I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Like Maria is incredibly talented but a bonus for ESPN is she is a female and Africa American. Both things can be true
@@WhoCares3001 It happened at the height of BLM and George Floyd so the timing speaks volumes. Fire them both I say. Maria trying to play a race victim to leverage a pay raise it’s shameful.

Rachel apologized because she got caught because Rachel made these comments a year ago. Many people knew about the tape last year. So if the apology was genuine, Rachel would have apologized to Maria last year.

You would have a point if Rachel didn't have a lot more seniority on the job compared to Maria Taylor. Imagine Maria Taylor getting the finals coverage job over Cari Champion or Doris Burke.
Rachel Nichols got some nerve to be so indignant when she’s absolutely mediocre at times (ie when she brought Lebron James up for some weird reason during Tim Duncan’s hall of fame ceremony and Derrick Rose’s past indiscretions during one of his biggest games of his season)
These two odd people are stretching the hell out of what Rachel said. In particular it was a private conversation. Love and respect to Rachel, be strong, beat these actual black racist.
I'm a black man saying this I sort of agree with Rachel just because of the tide in the country and it seems like ESPN has just changed their format I'm not saying it's bad or it's wrong by any means but it just seems like there has been a change and to add I'd be a fool if I didn't encourage some of this change but I do see why Rachel would think that
If I was Kendrick Perkins when they turned the camera on me to address this situation for Rachel I would have done like Kenny Smith did last year and walked off the set, LOL!!!
Rachel is obsessed with being surrounded by black male athletes, and she feels intimidated by a black woman who is athletic, articulate and is married to a black man. She feels some type of way
There's a big flaw in Rachel's diversity hire argument. The NBA Finals show has a predominantly black cast. So Maria's not a diverse hire. That's impossible. Rachel is on a gaslight campaign. Rachel is the minority hire on the NBA Finals Show. She lost the NBA Finals assignment because of her humiliating interview style. Someone in the NBA is sick of it. They made a call to ESPN.... ESPN assigned the 2021 Finals to Maria not because she's black. They know she's not going to do savage interviews. Race is not involved.
I don’t even see the big deal with what Nichols said. Let me clarify, Nichols was blaming ESPN not Taylor. She didn’t say Taylor wasn’t qualified. She merely said ESPN was trying to pander to blacks because of their bad history of lack of diversity. But Nichols seems to have a reputation for talking down about others so it’s no surprise people leaked it out.
She spoke facts and she didnt disparage Maria. She didn't say the only reason she got the job because she was black which Chris and Rob were insinuating . She said it played a factor because of ESPN's poor diversity record and the fact they were pandering during the BLM sponsored NBA finals of 2020.
@@soda8736 did Rachel speak facts about Maria actually playing ball tho???? No she didn't Rachel made it about her being black but not basketball tho...... I wonder why 🤔🤔🤔

Candace Owens is too truthful for y’all. She keeps it real and Durant have ‘victim’ mentality letting it rule her life and point fingers. She calls it as she sees it
I disagree…we all know tv networks are propping up black women specifically. Not alot of black males are getting those opportunities unless theyre athletes
When it comes down to it a large portion of the viewing audience really doesn't care about most of the personalities on ESPN. We record games, fast forward past the pregame talk, turn down the volume to avoid hearing the commentary and wouldn't mind if the network just went back to 18hrs of different sports followed by 6hrs of SportsCenter.
The tear like a drop of sweat is the by-product of (emotional) effort in dealing with a heavy subject. The OP is more in control when he is able to process and integrate the natural negative emotions this subject raises. I dont think we can process negative emotions if we dont allow ourselves to feel them, or feel them in full, or speak about them, or speak about their effect. And studies show that numbing them negative emotions, also numbs the positive and dulls executive function to some extent. Supporting eachother when we are dealing with these matters is in everyone's interest. By all means OP if that expression if a tear means you can't function afterwards with the clarity you showed and cant comment as confidently as you did, do something about it.
ESPN is a mess. The way this story even leaked was insane. You got an employee who secretly recorded a private convo and blew it up, then got fired. Nichols and Taylor aren't the only ones who feel the way they do. Lots of people in every industry feel this way.
@Mr Man You're right, it was left on ESPN servers and then (NY Times) "At least one of these people watched the video on the server, recorded it on a cellphone and shared it with others." I'm guessing that person did not tell Nichols she recorded it and shared it with others.
Rob Parker, you're a great journalist, whom has positions sometimes I want to check your brain, But your position on what Kendrick Perkins should have said was 💯 my brother, 💯!!!!
Why is NOBODY giving Rachel the credit that her almost 20-year career deserves? And to Rob and Chris-you both have distinguished careers that Maria DOESNT! Plain and simple. Maria is much newer to this and doesn’t deserve to have the biggest stage over someone like Rachel. She is top notch and deserves such! Playing second fiddle is not appropriate for Nichols.
So now you are speaking of two different journalists, just to be clear. When evaluating Rachel, can you honestly say Maria should supplant her during an NBA only gig, the sport Nichols has spent her life covering exclusively the NBA. So in this case specifically-not another with completely different people-the only reason Maria would replace Rachel is if it were a force outside of basketball.
He was on Twitter Spaces as a guest to the ladies of Dishes & Dimes podcast. I was on it and heard this. The ladies did not hold back and blasted him for his comments. And his stance of only caring about one woman, his wife, was what he stood on. He repeated what he said in that clip over and over and even said he wasn't gonna lose his job over no woman, except his wife. But remember that Perk and some of these other guys got their on-air start on her show so that gonna be loyal. The hot-button in her audio was the diversity comment. Because by saying diversity, folks immediately knew what that meant because this was not a competition between her and a man, so what else is left with diversity, race. ESPN is the ultimate responsible party in this because this should have been handled internally last year. But it also let everyone know where Nichols and Mendolsohn stand.... It's often said that its better to say how your really feel then to smile in folks' faces and hide it.
I think she was talking about the timing of it all. It was during a time where buildings were in flames and stores looted.. a lot of companies were going out of their way to be “woke” - aunt jemima syrup? Rachel just didn’t want to lose what she worked for due to all that.
And she’d be right in some instances. Just like affirmative action might explain her own advancement. A lot of our society is changing behind this social justice/BLM/sexual identity revolutionary stuff.
What bothers me about the statement you’re making is that it basically results in a no win situation for black people. If we don’t get a job because we’re black we feel some type of way. If we get a job because we’re black we’re also supposed to feel some type of way? Like I don’t understand what niggas want. We DO NOT live in a post racial society so to put expectations on people that would only exist in a post racial society makes no sense. It’s just not based in reality.
