With only three short strands of the original hookup wire surviving, Huw relics up some modern cloth covered wire to replicate the vintage appearance and sends the pickups off to House Of Tone in Chester, UK to be restored.

My 17 year old daughter was in the room on her phone while I watched this. After a while I noticed she was staring at me with incredulity. I said, "what?" She said, "why are you watching this? It's the most boring thing I've ever seen." Congratulations, you are doing something right.

My Mrs saw I was getting all ready to watch this. Coffee was poured, headphones were set out, prime position on favourite chair was secured. Video was watched and enjoyed. After watching she looked me in the eye and said “did you really just intently watch, and get excited about, a video of a man painting wire?” 😂 Yes Dear, yes I did!!! 👍🤘🎸

I've been looking forward to each instalment, love the attention to detail here. I completely agree, this is not about deception but about sympathetically restoring a beautiful instrument. Crap deception would be making videos about a soon-to-be-famous guitar anyway ;-) Loving the series and looking forward to the pick guard restoration. As per the comment by Whisper Thief, my wife is blown away (horrified) by my ability to enjoy geeky guitar videos like this! Love it.

I appreciate the reasoning behind relic’ing the wires for inside the guitar, I totally get it. But personally if I had purchased that guitar or any real nice vintage guitar I wouldn’t bother, to me repairs are what they are, renewing or replacing a broken or otherwise non-usable parts. In my opinion repairs give even more character, trying to make repairs look the same just isn’t for me. But I appreciate the lengths that you guys go to restore guitars to their former glory!

When you packed out the second pickup I thought..oh, shit... there's a broken wire.. After pausing it, I saw it was a hair on the screen lying just the same as it would've looked like that the start or end wire was broken and sticking up... 🤣🤣

Recently restored a pickguard on a ‘59 Strat. It was in the condition much like the one y’all have. I’d say it turned out well though. Salvaged as much of the original components as possible.

I'm trying to imagine this nicely refurbed '62 American guitar, sitting in a baking hot room, all on it's own, decades from now, with noboby around... it might have to wait *centuries* for aliens to land and spot it, wonder what it's for and maybe, if they've got the right sort of tentacles, give it a strum !! hahahaha

The next episode is going to be a time lapse of the guitar sitting in a vintage accurate, restored store front window with a hang tag so it gets the proper unsold dust patina and sunlight nitro paint fade. It'll take 30 years but it'll be worth the wait

I’m going to diverge slightly from your opinion with regard to reliccing the wire. It would be just as authentic to keep it clean and rewrite the entire guitar the same as it was when it was made, thus it is honestly clear it was restored to original condition.

Correct me if I'm wrong....but the wire (inside the cloth covering) is plastic coated anyway, almost like the 70s one ?

Love this series of videos. However, as others pointed out this one was missing some content. I was excited to learn more about the pickup restoration only to see them being sent off and back in a box. Sadly, a little disappointing. But, please don‘t feel discouraged to continue making great videos like many others you made so far!

Hi graemey, no the 70s pickup just had new wired added, but it's otherwise stock. Just like the 2 original 60s ones.

I don’t see the point of relicing wire when it’s not going to be seen and the guitar is being restored as a players guitar and not a time capsule ..

Well then, when you next restore a 60's Strat - you wont have to do it! This kind of attention to detail similarly occurs in all kinds of high end restoration work - not just guitars / instruments. I do get your point to be honest, but .. If i had an Old Strat, I _would_ like to think it still looked vintage under the hood, even if not 100% of it was vintage. It's a 'completeness' , its about creating a period correct finish. Even if 'unseen', it's known about and it contributes to an overall 'feel' about the instrument,

Do you own anything that'd you'd want restored exactly as it would've been? Car? Watch? Vintage guitar? Not asking facectiously. It's about the heirloom piece. When you do it becomes a personal thing that transcends purely practical choices and rather the entire history.

Good tips on relicing under the pick guard even if the6 stole the whole process off an online blog. They used gravit wire which is wrong Leo used western electric phone wire you can still buy it. But your right slightly more entertaining than watching paint dry should be.

I get it, but a little overkill dying the cloth wire where it will be inside where no one will ever see. This is where I have to think “are we making love to this thing or are we gonna jam on it & make some music?” Not trying to be a dick, I just think imperfections & signatures of luthier/repairman are a cool trait too. Just a little overkill I think. If it were mine I would have you mount your signature with the date inside. It’s still just an instrument that needs to be played.

We actually shot a bunch of intros and outros before the lock down David - just in case. As it turned out, we're glad we did otherwise we wouldn't have been able to keep the content coming to you guys. If you could see our haircuts now, we don't look the same any more ;)

I fully understand why you have aged the wire, but I would have thought the best approach would be to use new cloth covered wire and leave it looking new? Yes, route it correctly and solder it correctly, but I do think that ageing it is maybe a step too far. Regardless of the intention being not to deceive, this instrument could be around in 50 years time and a buyer then could be misled that the wire is all original. Ageing it will not make it play any better, its only purpose is to make it look as original as possible and therefore regardless of the intention, the net result could be that it may deceive someone?

Yes I’ve always wondered about this myself with restorations. I notice that parts that don’t get used such as the old but hard surgical hose or even the lot number stickers from the auction get kept as part of the story of the guitar. Huw do you normally create documents to go with the instrument detailing what work was done and how it was originally found? Probably a silly question I’m afraid but I’ve not owned a vintage instrument and have been really enjoying this series.

@@davidp5152 Yes David. I take pics and give a detailed account of the work done. I see restorations of other people's guitars as a collaboration, with the schedule of work discussed and agreed with the owner.

Mimicking the aged look of the original wiring to that extent is not consistent with today's accepted practice and the clothes dryer now apparently being a regular feature was also disappointing. Still, I know your heart is in the right place and your clothes are clean so I will try to be understanding. ;)

790 -1 = 789 views by the way the white plastic wire is too new dip in yellow stain before installing if some one unscrews the the pick guard it will shock them as it is not vintage correct!! Just another Fender fact!: Fender would ship their finished guitars in kit form to NZ in the 60's and would be assembled there by BB&G the importers to get around the import restrictions are they REAL FENDERS?? ................I have been around the block and am no FOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:28 in and still staining replacement wire, all the while you're going to use the '70s gray bottom pickup. Fucking tedious. Spend the labor cost for "relicing" a couple of pieces of wire towards a period pickup.

Really?? 20 minutes of wires? I don't get the purpose, if someone opens it the solder joints are going to be modern. Chris is also a player, I think these things are not important at all for him. Anyway great series, but this one was awful

This is mostly an interesting and absorbing series, but 18 mins of cloth dyeing is pretty dull. Not sure why you’re sticking with a 70’s pickup, surely better to put in a period correct modern copy. Hopefully the grim paint job is going to be removed, I look forward to finding out. And please switch off your tumble drier when recording.

All the works done this far is cool, but aging wires? by making them dirty? I undestand using the kind of wires used in the olds, but this part 5 is litteraly almost completely about soaking wires in shit...

I’m really not getting the point of this as the wires are never going to be seen. Fair enough use cloth covered wires rather than plastic as a nod to how it was originally, but staining the wire seems a bit ridiculous Tbh.

Yeah...not much content in this one. You want real vintage wire? I found an old, dead 1950s Dewald radio in my daughters garage and removed enough quality vintage cloth wire to re-wire 10 guitars. Food for thought, you can find them cheap.

Rather than relicing cloth covered wire to fit in with the two small remaining pieces.. Would it not be more honest and make more common sense to just replace all the wiring with new cloth covered wire. Your taking the piss now..

Excruciating boring and slow. I fast forward through this video and got the whole idea in about 30 seconds. Relic wire and send out pickups to get re-wired.
