@@jspur22 He DID give credit. The show runners just cut that part out and it never aired. He has gone on to explain throughout his career how that affected him and how it formed a friendship between him and Live after the outrage.
This pushed the show in a whole new direction, it set the standards for changing songs. Like Simon said he was the first to refuse to compromise he changed the song for him not himself for the song. That smile after Simon said that he was like I know what I was doing.
Remember when rock still had a place in popular music and the most controversial thing happening in the US was this guy getting voted off in 4th place? You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone lol
They did him a favor not winning. He would have been obligated to do whatever they wanted for a year. Instead he and his band made a kickass CD and had the freedom to make their own way. A lot of the winners faded into obscurity. By all rights he should have won but he was better off in the long run. Daughtry's first CD was outstanding and they've been killing it ever since.
The song was also recorded by the band Live for the 2001 Sun Records tribute album Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records. The song is also featured on Live's greatest hits album Awake: The Best of Live.
I think the night he was voted off, there was so much 0's at the end of Daughtry's card that the machine printed it out wrong. I think in the top 4, Daughtry had the highest number of votes and the producers miscounted it. It's hard for me to believe that all the teens and fans didn't vote for him that night.
I was just as ticked off as everyone else when he. was voted off but now I believe it was the best thing because if he had won, he then would be stuck in a contract with them and would be obligated to sing the type of craps they want him too. He is much better off and has made 4 great albums since then and toured all over the place. Chris is my favorite artist to come from Idol. I'm a huge fan and was lucky enough to see him in concert. Amazing artist. Taylor Hicks who won that season didn't make shit in music and his record label dropped him. He does Broadway now.
Saw Chris live in Copenhagen a few years ago. He was amazing. I just saw an interview with Hiward Stern, the band LIVE, actually played the song like this first, and Chris "borrowed it" and apologized to them after.
You know the coolest part of this story is....Chris is such a great example for all of those that are on shows such as American Idol who don't make it to the finals or win....He is such a very good example for those that feel like they failed and are therefore "awful". A very good example ....to never give up, and never take it that just because you did not go as far as you hoped on these shows, it never means that you are a failure and awful at it all, instead look at the good and the experience you gained and fight to go further and achieve that musical dream, if that was it but never judge yourself based on a show like this! How many winners on all these shows have ever even done anything to become a musical superstar like Chris? Really, many of the winners have not even achieved that stardom and status and success. So no, these shows.... winning it is not what makes the success of a contestant! In a way...Chris' story and experience and not winning the american idol title was truly a blessing!! And I say a blessing because he and his story is a very good message for all of those that did not make it to the finals and win!
Well the real winner is Daughtry. Because I'm not saying that winning isn't important because it is. Because that's why I choose Daughtry as the real winner of season 5 of American Idol and that's for damn sure.
@iStevie Chris Daughtry said in subsequent interviews that he mentioned Live a couple of times & it just hit the editing floor. If you listen to him say "we're gonna try something a little different" it sounds like he's getting cut off, rather than ending a sentence. I think that cut-off is where he mentioned Live & it got cut.
Greatest American Idol contestant ever. My only problem with his is that he is just too sexy, I can't look at him for more than about 3 minutes at a time because I go a little nuts. Thanks for posting!
wow very good Ohne das Original zu verschandeln ist hier eine super geile Version zu hören welche ihresgleichen sucht. Hätte nicht gedacht das es möglich ist. Super geile Stimme, aber auch sehr gut arrangiert (musikalisch)
Honestly best thing ever for him was getting 2nd. He would've been screwed & forced to record music that he didn't like if he had gotten 1st, for at least a year. This way at 2nd he still got the fame and public interest but kept his ability to choose what he wants to do. He's unarguably one of the top 3 most successful artists coming out of American Idol.
The little girl at the beginning of the performance sitting next to Ryan Seacrest was Chris Daughtry's stepdaughter who unfortunately committed suicide in late 2021.
I totally agree... They allow no artistic freedom with their winners. And he's a true artist, and I'm sure anything they would ahve done with him would have been lame.
@FroobRadio What part was that? At 56 seconds into this video, he talks about how Manilow is trying to help them "make sure they arranged these songs the best they could to make them current and try to bring the best out of a song that they probably normally wouldn't do"....then Simon goes further and congratulates him on making it (the song) his own version and further states that he (Chris) has refused to compromise......Chris took all that credit.....and I watched him do that in shock!!!!
Oof, should've gone up just a half step. Trying to hit an E 2 octaves below middle C with his voice range, not good. His version was good but the key its in wasn't supporting his range.
HOLY SHIT!!! It's Ed Bassmaster!!!! Would ya look at that!!??? Just look at it!! It's Ed Bassmaster!! TTThahahaha... Just look at him... He's walking the line.. Would ya just look at him? Just look at.... Tihahahaha.. Just look at him... Oh my... Wouldya look at that???!!! Tihahahahahaha.. Just look at him... Singing just like Johnny Cash... Oh my would ya just look at him.... Keepin a close watch on things.. Tihahahahahahaha.. Just look at him..
@FroobRadio I don't know why I am so pissy about this...I guess because I love what Ed Kowalczyk did with this song almost 10 years ago. You ought to give it a listen...his intensity is matchless!!
chris & david credited live & cornell but in chris daughtry's case AI cut that part of the interview.david said (on stage) he was doing chris cornell's version of billie jean
It was a blessing for him that he was kicked off the show, because if you win you have to make the records that they tell you to and they would have done to him the same thing they done to Bo Bice and try to turn him into a Pop Idol and Bo only came in in second place. Why do you think Taylor hasn't done well, it's because he is under contract with them and has to make the records they tell him to not the ones he wants to make. So I am happy that Chris didn't win, he can call the shots now.
Amazed........Everyone seems to think that this guy took a new spin on this record and Barry Manilow had never heard this style? Check out the group 'Live' and their version recorded a couple of years earlier I believe. Maybe wrong - but this guy is identical to theirs.
I totally agree, I have no clue how the hell he lost, he was my favorite as well, he was great and Taylor Hicks sucked and he's not even successful either, Chris Daughtry didnt need american idol cause right after he got voted off he became successful and started touring.
He would have destroyed any other contestants if he just threw in the final verse after that epic build up.. The song could have come back down into the final verse and it would have been complete. Only reason he didn't get it was because he left an awkward and incomplete song. If he finished it the audience wouldn't have felt like something was missing.
i cried for HOURS when i received the news he was kicked off!i was so horrified!well...he showed everyone with his amazing success with his record! i couldn't say the same for ANY other contestants/winner/runner-up of that season.
Why does Chris get so much credit for his outstanding interpretation of this song when he clearly is singing Live's version to the tee. Shame on Simon and Randy for crediting him for ripping off a copy-righted version/arrangement. lucky for Chris Live didn't make a fuss over it and they helped him get a recording contract.
@itcaligirl I just posted that he mentions this in later interviews, right? Of course, what was he going to say? "Oh, no. I just jacked this song from a no-name band." :\ When you're just starting out, I think you would like to promote yourself a bit, yeah?
