Chris Difford on his teenage diaries: "Drank rum, bought Quadrophenia, covered ourselves in glitter"

Direct from his fabulous writing shed, old pal of the pod Chris Difford remembers the loneliness of a King Crimson obsessive, being sued by the Mayoress of Acton, "plane-spodding", an eventful day with Mitch Mitchell, lunches with the McCartneys and dodgy film entertainment after work at the Readymix Cement Company. And the gig he organised featuring the Flamin' Groovies, Ducks Deluxe and Brinsley Schwarz to "raise money for an Agoraphobia charity - genuinely. The only problem: hardly anyone came."

This is definitely the best one. I've always admired Chris, love his lyrics and his singing, but the times, the stories he shared. Wow! It was all like nonchalant, "Im walking up to Mitch Mitchell's front door...", The Redi-Crete Friday nighters, or the Glenn story with the mayor, and the McCartney stories were great.

Eerily similar in their mundanity to my diary entries when I was 17, right down to mentioning what I had for my tea and having a bath. Chris was a great guest. I hope he returns.

Cool For Cats 2020 To change the mood a little I’ve been posing down the shed On seeing my reflection I’d rather stay in bed I fancy this I fancy that I wanna be on Zoom I give a little FaceTime spend it in my room But all I get is sleepy in my cozy little womb And by the time I’ve woken I’ve forgotten what I’ve said And every media tells me that it’s cool to be a cat Cool for cats (cool for cats) Only a cool New Wave Brit would interview from his garden shed! Excellent interview😎👍

Great fun.😁 Years ago, i met a lovely lady who i think managed Chris & Glenn at the time. It was in a pub and i think it was after a meeting for a t.v. show music supervisor pitch, which i went to participate in. I did ask her about them, but i think i was a bit merry so can't remember what she said 😅 I think Squeeze were fantastic, so thank you for having Chris on the show.

i love Squeeze, especially from their late-70s/early-80s heyday - top bloke, not just for the songs but also that gravelly baritone

Just watched the Andy Partridge and Graham Gouldman one too....these are great for someone whose formative years were influenced by these bands and they're so humble and genuinely enthusiastic about what they do. Amazing for all the talent they have how approachable they all seem to be. He kind of got me when he talked about the "warmth" of gramophones from way back which I suspect is a bit of childhood nostalgia...i'm going to sound like the curmudgeon I never thought I'd become but I'm not sure kids have the same voyage of discovery that we did (say over 50) ...it's like everyone lives in a constant present moment with instant access to everything and a sense of the disposable. Maybe pop music always was. I'm not sure we're creating the same strength of character which might be why these interviews/chats are so engaging. Of course my 5 and 13 year old would tell me I'm talking rubbish but if nothing else I'd want to show them the joys of discovering things with effort as super high quality insta-downloads of everything doesn't really create memories. Insightful guys here. And I still have the first record I bought with my own money at WH Smiths which was Cool for Cats because at 9 I was so proud I learned all the words!

These are so entertaining gents, well done. I met Chris here at Radio London and is one of the few (guests) I would consider sitting down with just to say hello....and maybe to grab a signature. His autobiography is so emotionally beautiful too if anyone hasn't yet read it.

Following Chris's mention of The Allman Brothers, Live At The Filmore, I bought The CD. Listening to it now it reminds me of every gig I went to in 70/71. Obviously the quality is higher on this, but the vibe is identical.

Lads,I needed this on the mad day this has become. Chris Difford standing outside King Crimson's house doing his best " Bluebottle "impersonation. If you were invited over to McCarney's for lunch you'd think you might have got a 4 course meal. Egg's on toast is the kind of lunch the rest of us have. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Hepworth's record collection. The sagging, leaning, bending stacks of albums remind me of those damp swollen cardboard boxes under the table of a 90s car boot stall full of James Last, Jim Reeves, Geoff Love, Richard Clayderman and Top Of The Pops albums featuring 30 year old women in football strip socks on the front cover.

Excellent interview thanks. Just picking up on something you were talking about last week, reviewing records. There is a phenomenon on RU-vid where people give their opinions on records they are supposedly listening to for the first time. Not sure if you have come across them, they call them reaction videos. You can see the face of the listener and the reaction always seems to be rapturous enjoyment, and often those reviewing are not the type of person you would expect to enjoy the type of music they are reviewing. My question is, are these "sponsored" videos, i.e. record company promoted. Or are they just people looking for high viewing figures and pandering to people, in confirming their good taste in music?
@alisonwunderland9900
@alisonwunderland9900 4 года назад
My thoughts on most of them is that how can they possibly have not heard of whatever 'famous' song they are listening to 'for the first time'?
@Smudgie
@Smudgie 4 года назад
@@alisonwunderland9900 Well I can perhaps understand that as those "reviewing" are often quite young and seem to be reviewing songs that are quite old. Not just that, I've seen many videos of people reviewing music that I would assume to be completely outside of their cultural sphere.
