December 10 1996
Chris Herren returns to Massachusetts for the first time with the Fresno State Bulldogs and takes over the game with 25 points and 5 assists on 9 of 14 shooting and 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point line. Herren led Fresno State to snapping UMass's 27 consecutive home win streak that spanned 6 years. The Bulldogs piled 102 points on UMass.
This game was hyped up to be the matchup of the two best backcourts in college basketball, but Herren (25 points), Dominick Young (13 points), and Kendic Brooks (10 points) smoked UMass seniors Edgar Padillo and Carmelo Travieso, who had previously helped the Minutemen reach the Elite Eight, a place Fresno State never came close to.
Herren was originally met with boos, possibly due to his hometown roots and being on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a member of Boston College, but only played in one game there.
