This is a live, extended performance of The Cave, performed at the SynthaCider event at Locust Cider in Lakewood, Colorado July 2 2022. The performance was live streamed on RU-vid, but unfortunately there were numerous freezes and dropouts in the video, as well as some audio glitches. Fortunately, Chris’ wife Trish shot substantial portions of the performance on her iPhone. This version cobbles together the best shots available between the two, patches the worst of the audio glitches, plus edits in the audience reaction at the stat and end. Overall, it’s not up to the quality of a typical Alias Zone video shot in the studio, but the performance was significant enough - including the first time Chris has performed with the ATV aFrame live - that it was worth sharing.

Beautifully done! Also, I just discovered this aFrame instrument thanks to you... unfortunately, it looks like they no longer make it (which I guess is good for me since I couldn't afford it at the moment.)

FWIW, it's still available; just not in the US - they lost their US office/distributor a few years ago. But places like Thomann still carry it.

What is the square drum pad? Great performance. btw.. Thanks? Pluck (gitar like) sounds mi element and rings? @19:30 very beautifull... pluck sound with flute like sounds. I love it.

Square-ish drum:An ATV aFrame "electrorganic" frame drum. Plucked sounds: MI Rings for the most part, although there are also some plugins such as Ableton's Tension doing an odd harp-like sound. The flute-like sounds is FrozenPlain's Terracotta sound set.

Hi Chris, this sounds really nice! I’ve taken your online course on modular synth. It’s always nice to see how artists perform live. Besides the modules, would you share what are all the other gears that you used in this video?

Hi, Alice - First off, here are the modules I'm using: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1943100 Externally, an M1 MacBook Pro running Ableton Live and an ATV aFrame electronic frame drum are the only other sound sources and modifiers. There is a PreSonus FaderPort 16 and Ableton Push 2 to help me control Live (so I don't have to touch the computer while playing), and a Focusrite Scarlett+ 4Pre audio interface for outside world connections in addition to the Expert Sleepers ES-9 inside the modular. On my Patreon channel (patreon.com/learningmodular +5v subscriber level and above), I go into great detail about how all these parts work together.

The most prominent sound from the laptop is the Korg Wavestation plugin, plus the lead played using Waldorf Pigments. Additional soft synths & samplers include FrozenPlain's Terracotta (the whistle-like sound), Live's own Tension plugin, and the Storm Drums library for the "big drum" hit. The sustained wordless vocals are by Holly Drummond; the Buddhist verses are from Spectasonic's Heart of Asia.

Hi Chris, I have a question for you. Since I’ve bought some professional audio processing gerr I can ear that the weakest link of the chain is now the output VCA of my Eurorack system. I go out directly from the XAOC Tallin to à Rupert Neve Design Shelford Channel and now I can ear very clearly the vca working. Should I use a dedicated balanced output module? If it’s the case which one do you recommend. Or is there a better vca that I can use? Thank! 🙏

I'd like some more details of what you mean by "I can hear the VCA working", but regardless I don't think adding a dedicated output module will improve it. I have a variety of VCAs that I go between depending on the patch and what it needs.
