You have to factor in the mental state of a player and I can relate. As a private person (as were a lot of my team mates over the year) I am measured, calm and avoid confrontation. In a game situation my personality change Jekyll and Hyde style. And a lot of the guys I know, particulary the competetive ones are the same. For that reason the ref has to manage that, in particular when it comes to professional sport. He cannot engage in such a conversation and pushing a player's button. Yes, it looks like the player has a choice but it is really the ref who controls the situation. And that was some devious shit.

It's complicated, I agree. I mostly dealt with officials from a player perspective so I am lacking the full view. The few games I "officiated" at a youth level (only friendlies, I don't have a licence as a referee) were amazingly difficult. It is one thing to sit on a bench as a coach or player or be in the game and seeing details that the referee is missing and working the game as a ref. But we are talking about NBA referees, professionals with tons of experience, who a part of delivering an entertainment product. My issue with refs like this one is how easily he could avoid the escalation . Basically don't talk to a player you have a history with, don't engage in a discussion. Which he clearly did and I suppose, intentionally, knowing that he can get a player to eventually say things you can T him up for. And then going on a rampage, tossing players, T'ing up the coach and basically deciding the outcome of the game. Again, these are professionals and that should never happen. Having said that CP can be a complete dick. @@EFFamily
