This song cuts as deep to the human experience as a song can. I'm not sure if anyone could do this better than Chris to cut into your soul and lay it bare.

Everything about the sound of this evokes the relentless passage of boring but prescious time while he cries & moans out his thoughts out above that background.

Wow, your reaction is awesome. The screeching steel in the beginning, the march, the repetition you hit on it all, well done! This is my favorite Chris Stapleton song, thanks for this, very cool 😙💕💕

Thank you for your reaction to Death Row, love Chris Stapleton. I know that you do music reactions but there is a movie you should watch if you want to learn a little about death row. The movie is called The Green Mile, starring Tom Hanks and Michael Duncan Clark. Even if you don't do a reaction to it, it is a must watch. One of the best movies ever. Warning, grown men cry so have tissues ready.

@Rogue Merlin 19 I have seen the movie a couple of times, and have told people that Michael Duncan Clark’s character is the one I’ve identified with the most of all the characters Hollywood has put out. His was my favorite role in the movie, and among my top 3 ever.

@@RockN2Country In 1935 prisons across the country were brutal and inhumane. Executions by the electric chair often had to turn on the electricity several times till the person was dead. Botched electrocutions like the character Del's were rare but did happen.

The Tempo to this song is what gets you. The snare pop, in the beginning, sounds like a pick ax, busting rocks, and you can hear the shackles and chains rattling, then the beat seems to morph into the marching towards the end of your life, then morphs again into sounding like a ticking clock, signaling your time ticking away. Then the lyrics on top of it all are just moving and emotional. I don't think even the producer/mixer/engineer's knew how great this was going to turn out, if they did, It was GENIUS.

I just stumbled across this reaction video and discovered your channel. I really enjoyed your review/reaction on this song and you expressed perfectly my internal emotional response to this song! That repetitive beat of DEAD MAN WALKING resonates in your soul with each throbbing beat! I appreciate your intelligent review, your obvious extensive knowledge of country music...(I was country when country wasn’t cool! 😁 And I’m also very familiar with “Sing Me Back Home” by Waylon! That’s old school yet timeless and hits you in your soul just as you said. But you had to reach waaayy back for one that even is comparable to this! LOL! It’s just great to see someone on RU-vid in my generation and that has a real familiarity with country music for a change! 😁)...and that you could actually vocalize your visceral reaction as well as the intellectual impact of these lyrics, the phrasing and timing of each line and how it must compare to the actual Death Row. You scored a new fan with this reaction/review! Now I’m off to catch up on some of your past videos! I noticed you’ve got some A-MA-ZING classics as well as some that must be more contemporary because I’m not familiar with them...and I do love to discover a new artist’s work that speaks to my soul!

Great analysis of the song. Stapleton's voice is so breathtaking that his songwriting gets short shrift. His sensitivity to the songs' topics is exceptional. Other great examples are Scarecrow In the Garden (From A Room v2) and Can You Run (SteelDrivers, Reckless cd).

gee - that song gave me the creeps imagining these thoughts goin through the prisoners mind and the permanence of it all - the finality of it all is spooky and although I believe in the death penalty in most cases I have ever read of - it seems so haunting and as you said about the guitar work on it makes you think the culprit is walking to his doom - wow the rating is apt in this one - he has captured the essence of the whole thing - sure is pure artistry - Sing me Back Home is prob one of my all time favourite songs too - dont think I could listen to Death Row song again though - talk about the fear of death - its so true in this song - cheers Don xxx

April, you're so right about that. That movie, and Michael Duncan Clark's character is the one I identify with out of all roles I've seen in movies. He believed in helping people, in doing good for them, and others suspected he was up to no good or they just didn't like him. In any case, what a powerful movie.
