The power in Chris's voice actually transcended the horrid phone cam audio quality. When he starts to belt out that chorus it's like his voice breaks through some dimensional rift that ignores the quality of whatever equipment is being used. This man's voice is too damn powerful to be constrained by technology.
The other thing to notice about the audience's reaction is the difference between before he starts singing and after. Before, it's like he's in some dive bar where nobody really cares that he's performing until after they start to hear him sing.....then crickets!
Laura Beth Cook yes!!! Came looking for this comment. Everyone was talking and cutting up UNTIL he opened his mouth. Anyone who can have a conversation while that man is singing is either literally deaf or not someone I wanna be around.
His voice is so amazing that it's easy to overlook the vocal choices he makes. Not just a giant talent, but a true artist. I believe he'll be considered iconic, like Hank Williams and Patsy Cline.
This is a song he wrote when he was with the group Jompsin Brothers. He has a few amazing songs that he wrote with that group. He was also a member of The Steeldrivers. Jompson brothers version is almost dangerous to listen to when experiencing a love loss like he's singing about. The music is so dark and hopeless and Chris' vocals screaming in excruciating pain. I don't know if there is a live version of them playing this song with the entire Jompson Bros. band but if there is that would be amazing. This acoustic version is excellent because....well Chris....but it doesn't have the same impact as the original. Even these guys left not feeling sad....the original leaves you in a different state completely if you've ever experienced something close to it. I hope you've found your smile and happiness again, it is possible, its different, but possible. Believe me
Loved it! I recently saw a video of Janis Joplin doing the Tom Jones Show (1970-71 ?) we all loved because he had fantastic bands on. Janis and Tom sang and danced together so well together. Blown away!!!!
Man, I wish that was a higher quality recording. It's just disrespectful to Chris' awesome instrument to not be able to fully appreciate it. Now I've got to find it somewhere.
Now you’ve heard the rock element from the Jompson Bros Days. The Steeldrivers, a blue grass group was really good. I think they did a version of “Midnight Train to Memphis” that you would enjoy. He also did this song in a live performance on Saturday Night Live with Sturgill Simpson that was great.
From the first time I listened to Chris S, it reminded of Janis J. They both express angst, anguish, suffering, etc. that you can feel yourself by listening. It's not always the lyrics or the singing of them, but the expression of the singer who transcends the lyrics. Some singers concern themselves with sounding "good" or "lovely" but aren't able to express emotions other than sweet or sad emotions. Personal suffering enhances one's ability to truly understand what it is really like, but not all are able to express it. Chris & Janis have/had that in spades.
Also...this song doesn’t make me sad per se. it just brings back a montage of memories of doomed relationships.... my husband and I were separated for two years and the lead up to that wrecked both of us. I didn’t think I would make it. We’re back together and happy AF so listening to this just makes me “touch” the battle scars from that time period and shake my head that we pulled through
Did you know this song is from a ROCK band Chris was in around 2010? They were called The Jompson Brothers. I love that the first song on the album is Ride My Rocket. A different side of Chris for sure.

So, Eddie's Atic in ATL is actually a well known club on the touring circuit. I was playing the same clubs when he was touring with Jompson Brothers ( around this time frame ) They had a huge following, but Chris went solo after this and the rest is history
If you’re thinking about Janis Joplin lately, that’s all the more reason to get know Beth Hart/Joe Bonamassa She also has a live solo version of “Am I the one” (Live at Paradiso) that’s crazy good, from just after she got out of rehab for depression and addiction. She’s came a long way from there till today.

You need to hear the original version with him in his previous band The Jompson Brothers. They were a rock band and the original with the full band is how this song was intended to be heard. This live version is amazing and Chris' vocals are on point as always BUT the original song with its deep, dark bass and offbeat drumming sets an entirely different tone. This song was intended to be dark and painful. The lyrics and Chris' vocals are an expression of excruciating pain, that bass and those drums are needed to truly show this. Its an entirely different experience to hear the original with the full band. You said in the video "this song doesn't make you sad" and I agree this version doesn't.....but the original is almost dangerous to listen to if you were currently dealing with a love loss like that, especially if it was a toxic mindfuck situation. The original does make you feel it....it would be hard not to. Now, I would LOVE to hear a live performance of The Jompson Brothers or even Chris' current band playing this song with Chris wailing away. THAT would be amazing...I don't know if its on RU-vid anywhere but I guess I'll be searching after I finish this comment.
Hey Guys, I’m a new subscriber and I’m a huge fan of the two of you, as well as a huge Chris Stapleton fan. Funny thing is I’m not into country music, but this man is something else. There is Rock, Country, Blues, Jazz, classical music genres then there is the genre of Chris Stapleton. Laura Nievinski, have you heard No one to blame, Them Stems, Daddy doesnt Pray Anymore, Whiskey and You? Just to name a few. Although I have yet to find anything by him I dont love. I'll be glad when he puts out a new one though.

This was obviously recorded on someone's mobile, and even though the sound quality is poor, his voice is so powerful, it doesn't even matter. I don't think he even needs a microphone.
