Gregg Allman is in the audience, he gave Chris a standing ovation. I think that says it all. Right before you ended the video they showed Gregg Allman.
@@rickolson-51 Well, I have to agree with Jamel, here. NOBODY else could cover this song like Chris. I won't argue that there is something special about original artists, but I wouldn't say it's not as good, I would just say it's not the same. a case in point here. The song "The Breeze" was written and first performed by JJ Cale, and of course, that same song was a big hit for Lynyrd Skynyrd a few years later. they are two VERY different versions, and both are great!
Actually that is so true. I was agreeing with one of the other responders, that is the way to cover an already great original. But Janis would have ripped it also. Joe Cocker too.
Thank you so much, Jamel, for giving me this gift. I had no idea that Chris Stapleton covered this song. All I have to say is: It’s f’ing BADASS! One of the best covers of any song ever!!! Chris should make an album of nothing but Allman Brothers cover songs. I’m blown away.
There isn’t anything this man CAN NOT do..watch him live in concert and his pure talent will blow you away!! His talent (singing, playing guitar) is beyond amazing
Did not know Chris has covered this song, when I saw the title, I was like 😮 Hell yeah, I have to hear this! No surprise, I was not at all disappointed!
That. Was. Epic. Good Lord. I'm a black guy and Southern Rock was always in my playlist. Others use to laugh when I told them THIS is our roots. BB King and Chuck Berry would love Chris.
Why the 👎? This man is one bad dude. He can sing anything and his playing skills are outrageous. Chris Stapleton is pure genius. I love you both, and your reactions are awesome bud. Keep up the great work 👍.
That gravelly, gritty, Southern rock sound from Chris Stapleton is on a whole different level than any body else! To know his "break" came in 2015 when he & Justin Timberlake performed "Tennessee Whiskey"/"Can't Drink You Away" together at the Country Music Awards is incredible! Before that he was primarily a songwriter. God bless his talented wife Morgane for giving him the encouragement he needed to start performing! I love your reaction to their videos! Peace, love and stay safe!
I love this song since it came out on the live version at Filmore East in 1970 i was just 8 years old .. i come from a family of 8 kids .. i am number 7 .. second to youngest .. and our house was full of music and musicians , so much great music came out back then .. loved this reaction i love Chris he is incredible and lots of credit to the band here .. as smooth as this song is .. it still has tons of energy and dynamics musically , they brought it! Be safe Jamel .. God Bless you and yours.
I love your reactions! Your appreciation of all genres of music is inspiring. Your excitement is contagious. I have never heard Chris Stapleton doing this cover until your reaction to it.....so Thank you! Keep up the great reactions! Especially Chris and Elvis!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this, because I've never heard this song before. I love Chris's voice, and I will be adding this to my playlist. BTW, love your videos!
I still prefer Gregg Allman's voice but that was an excellent version! Even though he didn't do the whole song, another really outstanding version was Bo Bice during American Idol!
Gw Mcklintock I have to agree with you! The Allman’s version is just a little dirtier and grittier and that’s what this song needs! Chris has such an amazing voice, but it’s almost refined next to Greg’s!
When you're talking about The Allman Brothers, much like Skynyrd, very few can compare BUT Chris has proven he can cover anybody but it's always HIM. He doesn't try to imitate. Just pay tribute and he is so damn talented it never comes off as a Rip Off.
Sure no one can copy an original but come on now...Stapletons voice blows Greg's out of the water. The sheer power & control killed this cover. Plus you cant say Chris doesnt put feeling behind his covers/music. Nobody else like Stapleton on this planet.
I can agree that no one else is like Chris Stapleton...he’s a hot new number and his voice is soulful and 100% unique. He did no disrespect to this song whatsoever. I’m gonna stop short of absolutely giving you my full opinion on your statement that his voice blows Greg’s out of the water. I’ll only say that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard, and will be done with that. When Stapleton gets done touring the world for 50+ years, makes a solo soulful album he knows will be released just after his death, and sits near the top of every hall of fame...then we can talk. You say Chris puts so much effort into his covers. How about the one who wrote, sang, and made that one of the greatest blues rock songs of all time?
OMG! I NEVER thought anyone could or SHOULD try this at home! 🤯 Yes, thousand times! Who's on guitar? He's doing THAT! All of Musicians handled that eponymous and intricate piece of music. I'm hooked, Chris Stapleton! Whew!
THe guy on guitar is none other than the amazing Kenny Greenberg. Look him up - you won't be disappointed. And check out his wife, Ashley Cleveland, singing Gimme Shelter. Makes Mick Jagger sound wimpy...she's like a foot off the mic with a powerhouse voice.
Epic...just epic. Chris crushed it. Damn. Nothing else needs to be said. Excellent reaction, Jamel. Stay safe and continue your journey, Bro. Love your content. 😎
GOAT! Chris Stapleton is IMO top 5 best vocalist to ever the grace the stage at any point in history. This man can sang your womans drawers off for you gentlemen!
Loved the review. I grew up listening to the Allman Brothers and listening to my dad's band play several of their songs. Big part of my childhood and still love them.
Gutsy thing to do! If it had been me instead of Chris, I probably would be too scared to mess it up, that I couldn't even sing it! But, then again, I think Chris might be a little better singer than me! LOL!
This whole Skyville Live concert was an ABB tribute. They had Little Big Town there, among others playing covers, and Gregg even got up and sang along.
Why is this a guitar song? Just curious and not being smug about it. I’ve never looked at it that way. “Jessica” is the ultimate guitar song. I can’t be driving and listening to that song under 85 MPH...Dangerous. Whipping post equally dangerous, but it’s cause my eyes were closed listening to the keys, as you both said. This song was written and sung by the pianist, and the organ is so prevalent in every version ever done. Does a guitar drown a piano and does a general crowd prefer guitar? The answers to those are yes...but this one is for Gregg and his keys.
Chris is the only act that I will spend the cash required to see him live .I cannot wait.He transcends genre human beings can't turn away from the soulful magic that comes from everything he touches! Plus the man is a humble decent human being.ty chris!
Great cover!!!! Love Chris Stapleton!!!! Did Allman Brothers proud!!! Also a mean bass player here! Love love love!!!!!!! Great reaction Jamal thanks!!!!
The Allman Brothers Band has been my favorite for years. Jamal's reaction to the original Whipping Post is how I got turned on to Jamel aka Jamal's station. I love watching his reactions to these songs I grew up on. Jamel is on an amazing musical journey of the best musical era with such an open mind. That's the way to listen to music! Don't see skin color, don't see genre boundaries, just take it all in! I do LOVE THIS STATION! Anyway I sure did get sidetracked here, this reaction is a yr ago or so. Idk probably too late to comment. It was my first seeing Chris do the Allmans & Gregg there watching it too, pretty cool, yep.
He seriously is a once in a generation talent. He could sing anything and make it sound amazing. Can you react to Delta Rae's Bottom of the River? If you like Chris, you'll love this group. They're southern gothic rock and have a real down home dirty rock with a little bit of country sound.
Love your reaction. You should have never doubted, if anyone, could do this song justice, it's Chris Stapleton. If anyone could do any of Allman Brother's songs justice, it's Chris Stapleton.
That's an impossible song to cover.... you can never hope to touch.... The Allman Brothers...... but Chris did a great job with it ! 😎🎸 Even Da Man himself (Greg Allman) liked it ! 😉 Now you want a treat, get Greg & Chris together 🎹😎 ☺🎸( mind blown ! ) Keep on Rockin & a Rollin' Jamal ✌😎
I absolutely love Chris Stapleton and his work. HOWEVER: 1. I'm 72. 2. Whipping Post has long been a major part of the soundtrack of my life. 3. My thoughts when I became aware of Stapleton's cover: "Youngblood better come correct.". My reaction: "YES! Chris did that!" Thank you so much, Jamel, for posting this!
Thanks for turning me on to this video. I am a HUGE Allman Bros. fan and to hear Chris sing one of my faves was outstanding, Gregg thought so as well. I saw them twice, once in NY's "Avery Fischer Hall" (Lincoln Center).
Love everything you do,Music is the best way to educate, communicate and appreciate each other, and keep doing that, get everybody out the box, this is coming from someone, that not long ago didn't speak English ,but music is the universal language.
Without question the best cover of Whipping Post. The Allman's recording of this at Life at the Fillmore, to me, is the best live recording of any song. Flawless, virtuosity, improvisational, perfect.
OMG Thank you for reacting to this!! I had no idea that he'd covered this so I was reacting right along with you, lol. (I freaking LOVE the Allman Bros. And this was just ... Great. There isn't another word for it.)
Love the song Blow by Ed Sheeran, Chris Stapleton and Bruno Mars. Blew my mind when I heard Chris after that, a country boy doing THAT song?? Liking this version, and I like artists that aren't stuck in one genre.
Not only did the "Country Boy" do that song, he most likely wrote it. Check out one of Chris's first bands the Jompson Brothers and that song fits in perfectly with what they were doing.
I love things like this cause its all of us, depsite differences, coming together and recognizing our similarities instead of our differences . If we all did that more often how our lives would be enriched and blessed.
Chris Stapleton was in a band called The Steeldrivers until 2010. It’s Bluegrass. He did two albums with them. You need to see the live version, available on RU-vid, of the song ‘Blue Side of the Mountain’ from 2008.
I'm a new fan of Chris Stapleton but long time fan of the Allman Brothers. Whippin' Post is one of my all time fave songs. Thanks for sharing this. Far too often ya hear of someone remaking/covering a song and ya just groan thinking how messed up it can get, but Chris delivers. I'd love to hear him in a duet with Lzzy Hale from Halestorm or Dorothy Martin from Dorothy. Lzzy performed with Eric Church at CMA Music Fest 2014 His song is "That's Damn Rock and Roll" She knocked them out
They really did a respectful cover of that song. Really cool. Thanks Jamel, I probably wouldn't have seen this cover if you didn't react to it. You Rock.
Chris Stapleton is one of the best artists in country these days. Now, you need to check out some Sturgill Simpson or Whitey Morgan And The 78's. Oh, and Larkin Poe, who are more blues than country but are totally rad. They even got nominated for a blues Grammy this year, even if they didn't win.
Chris is such a legend. He wrote so many hit songs for so many other artists but I think we can all agree it's so much more fun to listen to him play his own songs. Btw, Hard Livin' is another banger from him
Hey bro. I been watching ur videos n I wanna tell ya is refreshing to see someone that feels music the way I do n I also appreciate u giving different genres of music a chance n showing the world how powerful music really is. Thank you!!!
