Can you imagine covering one of the most famous Allman Brothers songs in front of Gregg Allman? And then getting a standing ovation from him?! My life would be complete!
Being my age, 64, and having grown up in the south i had an early appreciation of the Allman Brothers. But ill tell you what, Chris Stapleton does this justice and then some. I cant even think of other artists who would attempt what Chris absolutely slayed. Thanks brother
same here! I saw the allmans back in early 70's, got to see Chris when he was with Steeldrivers and Jompson Brothers. Chris did this song justice and added his own special sauce!. He KILLED it. and the bald guy on guitar, not sure who he is, but wow, he ripped it too, and was FEELING it.
What an excellent performance! All of us who grew up listening to the Allman Bros and who miss Geg very much can appreciate what Chris and this band pulled off with this rendition. Chris is just an incredible gift to all of us with his vocals and his guitar playing. What a treasure.
@One Issue Voter like I said nobody is Gregg Allman, and there will never be another Allman brothers band. I saw them live several times back in the 70's. no, this is nowhere near what they did, but I still think he did a great job, I have heard this song butchered by a lot of bands.
Who ELSE can cover the Allman bros AND Prince.........flawlessly???????? u guys Chris Stapleton is a marvel to be heard, generations from now people will STILL be amazed by this musical genius 👍👍👍👍
Excellent cover. Stapleton has the voice for this song. However, imo, Not quite the same raw emotional gut wrenching “feel” of the “At Fillmore East” version. Zappa could do a helluva cover of this song too, but then the xylophone would come in. 😂
I've seen the Brothers 65 times, every iteration of the band. The thumbs down folks just can't admit anyone can do Bros. material except them. I beg to differ. They did damned good job, the guitar build up at the end was awesome. Chris poured his soul into it, so what if he's not Gregg, he isn't trying to be. Mr. Allman didn't seem to dislike at all.
I love Duane Allman and I damn sure bet that everyone on that stage loves him and has been influenced by him. Nobody here is trying to upstage Gregg or Duane….they are paying respect. Duane and Gregg’s prowess and legacy doesn’t need you to stand up for it, it stands on its own just fine. Music isn’t a competition…it’s an art and it’s subjective. You are completely out of order. Duane would tell you that himself if he were here.
@@DaZ403 Other than Derek we have the great Jack Pierson , if anyone can keep the faith he can . He's played with The Allman enough times to prove that. No one will be like Duane NO ONE.. So why if Chris is so talented he needs two other guitarist to play the song. I've been playing since i started in 67 when i was 11. Duane was my main influence along with Terry Kath. They guys playing Dickies & Duane's parts are not trying to be them or like them they just played it as they would & you can't fault them for that. You are welcome to give my work a listen & i am not playing anything but my own work & the demo is from our band. No i'm not buddy Guy either but i am a musician for real. Feel free to leave a comment good or bad . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RHj04fFTrZI.html /// & our band demo, these are just audio tracks. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lJelsuT1UxI.html Have a good Thanksgiving
Lets just take a minute and soak in the fact that chris sings amazing and he sang this almost identical to gregg allman. but this just goes to show case how good of a singer gregg allman really was he doesn't get enough credit i absolutely love gregg. What we all should do is listen to this version first then immediately go listen to the allman brothers original and your ears will not deceive you that the allman brothers version is the only version to listen too. But chris sounds the best to me when singing bluegrass with the steeldrivers that gives me goosebumps..
This was called 'A Tribute to Gregg Allman' 🤷♂️ it was an entire show @ Skyville Live. Here's another song from it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mJMFZTY9taQ.html
Chris can sing write and play very rare today with instant gratification. Why learn an instrument when a computer can do it hell computers can help you sing.
❤️🔥 Chris Stapleton could blow the roof off just singing the ABC’s!!!!! Every performance is EPIC and beast mode!! He’s an absolute phenom!!! Props to the band that slays right along with him. ❤️🔥
Much as I love Chris Stapleton, I feel like there's some haunted, desperate element to Gregg Allman's voice that just elevates this song to a whole other level.
You're right, there was. It was his attempt at getting through life and staying alive. Seriously. He was a white man with ties to the old country bluesmen.
30 years from now we will be saying the name Chris Stapleton right along with legends such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, George Strait and so on...
I was in high school when the Allman Brothers first album debuted. This song is on it, of course. The first time I heard the album it was a religious experience. Hell, it still is after 50 years and hundreds of listenings. I'm still hearing nuances I hadn't heard before. This song is as close to a rock anthem as there is in my book. I don't know if its ever been coverd before but if someone is going to do it justice, Mr. Stapleton is the person I would have picked. He and the whole band here captured the essence perfectly. They didn't play it note for note like the original or even try to. What they did was to emote musical elements that are pure Allman Brothers and they did in a very reverent , loving way. I was moved. Great job by Chris and the band. Can you imagine playing this in front of Gregg Allman?? Thanks for posting this Kenny!
WHOA!! Chris Stapleton sure tired this song to the freakin whoppen post him and Greg Allman would knock this out of the park! Heck yeah! How many agree?
Lord have mercy that was fantastic! That man can sing the phonebook and I'd listen. Such a wonderful tribute to one of the most amazing Southern Rock artists of all time. Thank you Chris for doing that masterpiece justice.
I have been following the Allman Bros Band since I first heard them almost 50 years ago. The first album I heard was on an FM station out of Portland, Oregon. My girlfriend had just broken up with me, so I did what I always did back then after receiving bad news. I had a little herb, and turned out all the lights, to match my mood, and tuned into the best FM station at the time. I can't remember the name of the station, but the DJ said he had just got in a new record. He said it was the new ABB album which happened to be a double live album. I had never heard of the Band before, then he said he was going to play as much of it without interruptions as he could. Back in those days the weren't many rules to follow. So he put the needle down and for the next buck twenty-five I was introduced to the best jam band in the world. When this song played at the end it was 22+ minutes of the best damn song I ever heard. It still is. I have heard some pretty good knock-offs of it in the last years, Mountain Heart does a good one. This one though captures the heart of the song as good as any I've heard. This song should always be recorded live as this one was. I will be back here to hear it again. Great job from all the members of this band
Kenny, thanks for sharing this video of this band's live performance of a great version of this ABB song... They played it like they meant to honor the song as it was created to be performed.
If they had brought something "new" to the song, it would not have made the impact that it did. Sometimes you leave the classic in it's original state and knock it out of the park by performing it to a "T!" Maybe there's a little jealousy tearing its head. A thumb down on this proves lack of appreciation to a great performance.
@@fatooshtkd If there are already 10K up votes then your one vote won't even make a ripple. But if there are less than 100 downvotes and you add one, you make a splash. That's how trolls think.
Chris Stapleton can make anything sound great and when you give him a classic he just makes you groove. One of if not the best musicians in the industry today hands down.
Kenny Greenberg with Bobby Bradford Blues Band. Kenny came to Nashville from Louisville, Ky with his best friend at the time Jeff Zimmerman, and immediately hooked up with Bobby. That was around '71, I think, anyway, he had only been playing guitar for about 2 years then, maybe a little more but he was smokin'. Before long, after Bobby joined the Navy, Kenny was doing the sessions thing from Nashville to LA and back. He is an awesome human, a real down-to-earth guy. He makes you feel like you belong. He never got caught up in all that B/S that was happening back in the day! He constantly played gigs, went home, and practiced until the sun came up then he slept. Are there any aspiring musicians out there? This is the way it's done! It starts with a dream then you become dedicated and with that comes sacrifice. Without all 3 all you have is hope. Anyway, awesome rendition of Whipping Post with Gregg in the front row!
So awesome to see Kenny Greenberg on this......from the Prisoners of Love with Jimmy Hall to The Fortunate Sons to the arena gigs.....such a great player!!
The Sheepdogs do a pretty gnarly cover as well, but there isn’t a video with professional quality on RU-vid. Caught them a few years back in concert and it was superb. Idk if it’s better than this, but worth a listen if you can find it.
I saw a man in Jackson square New Orleans. He had an amp that was beat up pretty bad and an old guitar case. I asked if he could play some blues. He only nodded his head, he was very withdrawn. He removed a fender guitar from the old case, he plugged in his amp. This withdrawn man played whipping post and sang his heart out. I have never seen anything like this before or since. When I hear whipping post the tears flow , I can not help it. When I walk into any establishment and they have a hike box, whether I'm staying or not, I play whipping post. To the man in Jackson square, you gave me something I can never repay and something no one can ever take from me. I thank you . When the man finished that day in Jackson square, there must have been a hundred people gathered round him. My tears come because I feel his pain somehow. He did not just play and sing whipping post. At some point in his life this man had been tied to the whipping post.
powbobs www.wideopencountry.com/see-chris-stapletons-smoking-cover-allman-brothers-whipping-post/ this was recorded in 2015, Gregg passed in 2017. I’ve seen the ABB more times than I can count, I know what Gregg looks like. I was lucky enough to be at the Beacon in NYC to see their final run. Believe me, that is Gregg Allman.
Dig the berklee orchestra rendition. That one is pretty fantastic, this one's great too though. Says a lot about the Brothers music that it can be played by an orchestra and sound as complete as it does
What manner of rock magic is this !! Chris, the Brothers, every single person on this stage brought it home, took it to bed and made it breakfast in the morning !! You guys are pure and wonderful and I think I woke up my whole building this morning !!
I've listened to a few different versions of this song, and no band does the guitar solos like the original ABB- they are simply out of this world. But Stapleton's vocals here give me chills. The raspiness of his voice each time he sings the word "tied" evokes the feeling of someone being given 30 lashes. Chris SOUNDS like he's screaming in pain, while still making it sound like music.
Wow! One of my favorite singers, covering one of my favorite songs that originally featured another of my favorite singers. What could go wrong? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Very nice version...the slide player is even playing a Gold Top, Just like Sky Dog did, back in the day!
@@keithlangdon1103 Agreed...or at least the song MUST be respected. As an example, another of my favorite songs is "Dreams", again by ABB. Now, much as I like Molly Hatchet, I despise their cover of that song. I feel they did a disservice to the song, and themselves. They are a better band than that.
@@cavecookie1 Molly Hatchett’s version was a third rate knock-off of the Buddy Miles version. And while Duane did play a Goldtop early on (though his was a ‘57 with PAF’s rather than the P90’s on this guy’s), he never played slide on “Whipping Post.” At least not on any of the many versions I’ve heard.
Great arrangement. The horns are put in the right spots and make accents that seem very natural. Great guitar work and Staplon is the perfect keeper of the flame for this vocal. Best interpreter of Greg's vocals.
All I can say is....WOW!! Before hearing this, I would have said no one could do a righteous cover of this Allman Brothers Band classic, but damn if Chris Stapleton didn't!!! I've seen him live. I should have known. 😁❤
Chris Stapleton could sing the phone book and it would be amazing. One of if not the greatest singer of all time. I could listen to him sing 24-7 and never get tired of hearing his voice.
We all grew up playing that tune and there are thousands of versions put there but this was exceptional! Every time I hear Chris Stapleton and band play I am more impressed. The horns doubling the organ line is just awesome. The only way this could have been made better is to add another drummer as good as this one. Thanks Chris!
Love the Allman Brothers...love Chris Stapleton. That’s one mean solo in the middle by Kenny, love how he put his own spin on a classic Duane Allman riff. Kudos all round. Extremely tight performance all around. Love the slide at the end by the second guitarist. They definitely did justice to the original.
Great cover. When the listener knows every single note and the musician nails, it their way, and the listener doesn’t turn it off because something good is coming. Great job.
