Chris Tanev TRADED To Dallas Stars in 3 team Trade with Calgary Flames & NJ Devils! Markstrom to NJ? 

A report came out today that the Calgary Flames intend on holding onto Markstrom through the trade deadline & not trading him. I did this video last night after the Tanev trade and this report came out later today

I 100% agree with you Joe, there is definitely more to this. 1.25m is a lot for a 4th rd pick, so i think this is definitely going to leas to more, most likely Markstrom. He is old, but I can mention so many reasons why hes a good fit as well as internal connections with the Devils.

As a Flames fan, I feel the trade was disappointing, I wasn’t expecting a 1st but I thought we could get a 2nd a higher prospect than what we received. Especially with 50% salary retention.

Well, looks like Markstrom isn’t being moved this year. I get it, Calgary is as much in the hunt as we are sadly. Hanafin is still possible but over 1M cap space is a lot to give up for a fourth in 2 years. Flames don’t owe us anything for doing that either lolb

nobody can ever be 100% sure that this trade is just a precursor of whats to come for the devils, but i will say this, the 4th round pick the devils got is a meaningless pick for the team, the best 4th round pick the devils have made in recent history was miles wood, so we arent talking about a player with a ton of high end talent if the devils keep the pick, and not to mention that pick is for the 2026 nhl draft which makes it even less valuable for the devils to hold onto, the devils did retain some of tanev's cap space but i think it ended up being like 1.5 mill or right around there that the devils retained because technically Calgary traded tanev to the devils and calgary retained 50% and then the devils traded tanev to dallas and retained another 50% on top of that. so dallas has 1/4 of tanevs total cap hit on the books. its complicated i know, but what im getting at is that the deal didnt really get the devils much in return and it didnt soak up all of the devils cap space, and its use it or lose it at this point anyways and the devils making that happen for calgary is basically the devils doing them a favor that they didnt have to do, and all of that stuff combined is why i personally think a major deal is coming, my best guess is markstrom 50% retained and hanafin either 50% retained or with an extension will be making their way to new jersey. just a guess though

Whenever there is a 3rd team in a trade, purely for retaining salary, I always which they just hold onto the main piece. Like Jersey send Brady for Tanev, then just shrugs and goes "you know what, we're good. We don't want to trade him to Dallas anymore." (and yes, i know it would never happen as it would be a death sentence for the GM, as no one would ever trade with him again. But still, I would love to see that one day.)

I think Fitzy is gonna wait until next year and take the 2 years at 6 mil rather than this year with 8 mil and the next 2 at 6? Goalies are way better offseason traded anyway. Fitzy got in good with Calgary, hey I’ll talk to you at the draft buddy 😉

I think the move by Fitz serves as a "loss leader" for a possible Markstrom deal. However, the timing of that deal will be strictly determined by how the Devils record and gameplay is after the 3/7 game. Should the Devils amass a large number of available points over the next 4 games and get some help by teams in front of them in the WC race losing points, I think Fitz will look at the probability of making the postseason and if its favorable, he pulls the trigger at the deadline. This salary retention by Fitz ensures he's the first call from Conway. Should the Devils lay an egg over the next 4 and be too far out, Fitz may look to acquire Markstrom in the off season, with Fitz being the first call. Waiting until the off-season gives Fitz a little more time to sort out the deficiencies a little better. As for what's included going the other way... I sure hope its not Holtz. I would rather them move Casey to be honest, and Calgary may need to bolster the defense after losing Tanev and possibly Hanafin. Otherwise, I am not sure what buying a 4th in 2026 does when they lack picks in 2024.

Let this rumor die please. At this point Markstrom is not going to save this team. He is another 6 mil player that may be an improvement yes. But that's not going to change the god awful defensive play in front of him nor is he going to make the team score 5 goals or more again. I'd rather Fitz use that cap space to shore up the Blueline instead. Equally as important as a better goaltender. I don't want Fitz to give up the entire farm to get him either cause that's what it's going to cost.

Hanafin and extension to Bruins for: Lysell, Walsh and a 1st rd pick.

The Devils aren't getting either Markstrom or Hanafin. Because if they were, it would have happened in this trade.

Fitzgerald is not being charitable for no reason. It has to be to acquire Markstrom. I'm not crazy about it because he's a 34 year old goalie, but goalie is one of the primary reasons holding this team back. Holtz is gone if this trade goes through.

For NJ to pay $1,25 million just to get a 4th round pick makes zero sense at all. 4th round picks are worth little to nothing. You have a better chance of an undrafted player asking for a tryout and making the team. I dont know what kind of contract that young goalie had so maybe they wanted to dump his contract? This really feels weird. There has to be more to it.

Markstrom is so old he might be the worst possible fit for this team. Odds are he is a liability very fast on a big 6mil contract and will have a massive dip in his play if they give up anything for him just so we make it into the playoffs this year to get destroyed in 5 games Fitz should be on the hot seat.

Markstrom to Devils for 1 st plus

Let's be honest. The season is over in NJ. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald punted on this season long ago. By the time the deadline hits, it won't matter for NJs fortunes in the least. This trade is a slap in the face of all NJs fans who have been waiting for Tom Fitzgerald to DO SOMETHING....anything this season to help NJ actually WIN games. Fact is, there has been zero expectations nor urgency to be a winner this season. That sentiment comes straight from the top. NJ will be sellers. Toffoli & Miller will be goners soon.
