A lot of people dont fully understand --so let me break it down for those of us who are NOT lawyers. He was on a visit for one school--but had an interaction from another school...while on an official visit it is "understood" that u are there for them. Even though they were playing MSU...so he shakes the hand of MSU as a coincidence... nothing malicious just courtesy---but because it was his top school...the NCAA would hold MSU at fault and say they influenced Webber. That he used the Minnesota trip to "unofficially" speak to MSU. If they would've been playing Rutgers or Witchita St...no one wouldve cared!(they wasnt a top team or threat to sign him) Once the picture was sent... Webber couldn't go to either school...that is why Izzo was upset--because he know Chris was going to strike both of them off the list...if it wouldve been Minnesota vs Michigan and the same photo appeared...he would've had to stay away from U of M as well. (hope this helps clarify a little)...
He was going to Michigan state but because they took a picture of him shaking someone else’s hand, the ncaa thought it was tampering so he was unable to go to Michigan State
@GameTimeClips1 he was touring Minnesota. He shakes hands with a Minnesota booster, MSU AD takes a pic of it. How is that tampering by MSU:; wouldn't it be tampering by Minnesota. The assumption is the Booster for MInnesota is giving him money or making a promise of money if he signs. This story is missing something
Larry Bird said Chris Webber scared him during the lead up to the 1992 Olympics because he banged him around in a game. And Chris was STILL in college at the time. But nobody wants to hype THAT up the way they do when Larry said Jordan was good as an established player already 🤔🤔
Without a doubt they where so much fun watching them boys play wish Webb would have stayed one more year and played with the guys probably would have won a natty
I don’t know Man…those UNLV Runnin’ Rebels teams with LJ, Augmon, Hunt , etc. are pretty close for me. They were so fun to watch but , yeah, the Fab 5 was something special
I dont get it, they're supposed to be getting g a free ride. All the classes paid for and all the Dorms and food. So over 4 yrs thats like $160,000. Making all this money off their backs?😂 yall got a weird sense of thinking
@@stuartewoldt1513 It's not a " Free Ride". They get that scholarship under the condition they play and practice whatever sport gives them the scholarship. This whole free ride just makes me laugh. And, before the NIL deals. They were not allowed to make ANY money. Not even keep a job. Not take money for their autographs, jersey sells. At least the NIL that can make some money.
@stuartewoldt1513 quick math $160k x 15 $2.4M most for the power 5 conferences this is earned off just the TV deal for a big game and they play almost 40 games a season so they give these kids a scholarship in exchange for billions pennies on the dollar
I went to watch the full thing. Webber felt disrespected by MSU that they took a picture. He basically saw it as blackmail and trying to force him to go MSU and he didnt want to be forced.
@@itchymas1683 What? What do you mean he was the same all the time, we even skipped school, he was our top athlete, no competition at that time, from anywhere in the D. He was at Country Day Highschool. We beat them, but he wasn't playing that day. The next time we played them we got destroyed. Lmmfao
Chris was one of the coolest players during that 1990’s time. He used to bring it and I really enjoyed watching him play. The Fab 5 was so much fun and they did it on the court. Thanks 😊
Love C. Webb. Wore number 4 on every tram I played for. Admired his versatility and tenacity. Much love. Everyone I ever played with wanted Jordan’s 23 or Magic’s 32. I was like naw, not like them never cared for it. I wanted my passion for the game and my willingness to play any part, do anything for the W. I saw that in him. # 4 for life.
Chris was such a High School Superstar that I really believe only Lebron outshined him as a high school player due to ESPN and other cable outlets. Man o man, Chris was unbelievable bro, I remember when the Russians brought over their Jr. Team to play against the Michigan All-Stars (Chris, Jalen, Voshon, etc.) Russia had a line up of 6’7, 6’8, 6’10 and two 7ft post!! Chris turned it out downtown Detroit at Cobo Hall!! Man he dunked on the two 7ft post off of a reverse pivot! 😂
Man listen, Chris had a duel with a player named Lorenzo Orr (he played for Pershing High School in Detroit), and they had the game of the year downtown at Cobo Hall!!! Lorenzo was maybe 6'7 BUT HE HAD A 55" VERTICAL!! Lorenzo ran the Public School League, but when him and Chris met in that cross over game, a legend was BORN!! Chris was only a SOPHMORE!! He did it all in that game and was the MVP of the Tournament. SMH@@huntington-ng4hq
Basically he was touring at Minnesota and while he was there attended a basketball game against MSU. While he was shaking hands with Minnesota people, MSU’s staff took a secret picture with a coke bottle in the picture and it probably triggered the NCAA because it triggered rules about athletes promoting companies/getting paid. As result he felt betrayed because they were trying to sabotage him from going to other schools. It didn’t break any rules but because of that incident Webber didn’t go to MSU which made the coach curse on the phone.
For those of you who weren’t born or not fans of the game back then…coming out of high school, Chris Webber was comparable to LeBron and Zion….all eyes were on him with or without the Fab Five. Webber is who mainly made the Fab Five “Fab”ulous.
@@oldschoolruler yeah you’re right about Howard signing first and then Jimmy i believe. Then it was Jalen and after him there was Ray and they all convinced Webber to join them. Jalen’s high school coach was Perry Watson who became an assistant for Steven Fisher that year. There was a lotta controversy surrounding his hiring because he also coached the AAU squad that had Rose and Webber so other colleges felt that he was given the job in exchange for securing Rose and Webber.
It's crazy how rules they don't even abide by can change the students path of life events.... although it wasn't an athletic story that's sad, because we all know the rest of the legendary Baller.... but I'm thinking of the players this probably happened to and they never heard of again...
It was ray jackson that was not supposed to be there GLEN ROBERTSON was joining FAB 5 tell he ran into prop 48 then they took jay jackson …. But can u imagine big dog on fab five team 😮!!!!!!!!
If you watch the movie Hoop Dreams there is a kid from chicago playing in an all American game and when he’s hanging out in the hotel or dorm you see those three guys in there.
Dayum. C- Dub and those boyz (J King, J Rose, Howard, Jackson). They put Hiraches on the map. Baggy uniform and ankle socks that held its style for over 20 years. Early to mid 90s was the shit.
I got a chance to see CWebb and the Fab 5 play in the Final 4 in Minneapolis. CWEBB is one of my favorite players of all time. His hall of fame speech was one of the best ever!
I will always respect C Web. He still respected and honored his father because him coming to Sacramento was supposed to destroy his career. Thank you C Web for all of your hard work to bring the kings wo close.
This short is insanely confusing: -“Locked in” at MSU -Takes a visit to Minnesota(guess he wasn’t “locked in” to MSU) -Compares Minnesota football games to University of Michigan football games -Photographed shaking hands with someone who is apparently associated with MSU (or Minnesota? This part was confusing) -Gets call from a disappointed MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo saying “f@ck” -Ends up going to the University of Michigan This story needs a LOT more time dedicated to it than there is in this short.
More viewers should understand that a short isn't meant for telling an entire story.. it's to highlight a quote and/or influence the viewer to go watch the whole story....
I don't think so, Shaq wanted to play with someone who was going to defer to him ie: pass him the ball and understand their role, Webber was a LEGIT pf him the low post wasn't big enough for those two behemoth to roam together.
@@pheo1418 man if Robinson and Duncan could do it those two could have. I think Webber and Shaq would have gotten along once they started winning which I believe would have happened.
They high post feed the low post feed game would. Have been crazy because Chris Webber could handle the ball feed Shaq . Shaq gets doubled . Shaq just throws alley oops to Chris Webber it would have been stupid highlight reels every game .
Oh my goodness, I was a huge fan of the "Fab 5" back then. They reminded me so much of me and my friends playing basketball in the playgrounds growing up.
He was touring Minnesota U just to see his options even though he was set on going to MSU. Now in this era of NCAA, illegal recruiting was heavy and happening alot in the background. Its so bad that if you buy a McDonald's happy meal to a college athlete, they could get in trouble and get their scholarship taken away. But alot of these happens behind the curtain. MSU's AD taking a sneaky picture of him shaking a booster's hand alerted NCAA officials to question Webber to make sure that nothing illegal going on. Its a serious offense and I'm sure he was drilled with tough questions. And that broke his trust with MSU and him ending up to Michigan..
Supreme physical talent and ability has allowed him to get away with instance after incidents of sketchy behavior. Nothing has ever been his fault. Ever.
Lots of sketchy behavior around top prospects including the NCAA itself. NCAA had to investigate itself many years later regarding Chris Webber and the Fab5. Go look at Bo Jackson's story dealing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's not all on young individual men while old established organization are corrupt with greed and power.
Ok what I got from this clip is that the NCAA was impressed at how Cris Webber shook someone's hand through a coke bottle. I'd like to know how he did it as well!
The endorsement deal was done.. with hand shake back then. However the picture was the way . they could blackmail him..if change team or their agreement. Sadd but true!!!
how tf dont understand lmao.the handshake must have been some type of ncaa violation, hints the reason he was not a spartan in college.literally through a coke bottle
A handshake with the wrong person could be cause for an investigation by the NCAA back then. Boosters (a.k.a. program donors) were off-limits to players. The NCAA was wicked, hence the reason players get paid now.
It means the guy was being sneaky and hid his camera behind a coke bottle and you could still see somewhat blurry image of Chris shaking the guy's hand through it.
@@dennisdezarn5895I don't understand either, however Michighan State Spartans is a different school than University of Michigan Wolverines! . FAB 5 Was Michigan Wolverines!
Clem Haskins was trying to get everyone at Minnesota. He got Chris Webber to visit that old basketball arena after going to the Elite 8. Hats of to Clem The Gem
@@ToxicBottledOstrichNostrilswho cares if it’s a can or a bottle…explain wtf is going on. If he wanted to go to Michigan state why would the athletic director for Michigan state set him up? I’m so fucking confused.
@@ryanb5099 I don’t have the answers you’re searching for but if he took a picture through something, I would assume it would be easier to do that through a bottle instead of a can. I’m clueless as well
@@ToxicBottledOstrichNostrils shoot. I tried googling it and couldn’t find any answers. I’m assuming the guy he shook hands with in the suite tossed him some money and the athletic director at Michigan State took a picture of it. Idk.
Yep. And he went to Michigan, took booster money, all the games he played there are wiped from the record books. And today nobody wants him around the Michigan program. Great legacy Chris 😅
I think that is stupidest as 🤬NCAA is a billion dollar enterprise & I don’t give a 🤬if these great players took money. What this man did on the court should not be denied.
On every team, specifically the clips and 76ers, the players did not step up to get the job done but that’s on coach not preparing them to get to the next level. Mainly adjustments, sticking with certain players, not changing what is not working with the play calls and not opening that ish…
