Sorry to hear that Mike. I think we all know that hollow feeling when we lose a big fish. To be honest I think I would have lost that fish if it had been on a less bendy rod when it was trying to get under the log jam. The bend right back to the handle was only apparent when I saw the video. A giant spring that helped protect the tippet. The strength of the fish was astonishing. On bigger rivers and lochs it’s much easier to land fish, on these small burns there are just so many snags they can dive into.

Very same happened me this weekend, that's fishing sometimes isn't it?!! :)

Thanks. It is amazing what goes unseen in some of these small rivers. People often assume there are only small fish, but they do hold the odd surprise.

It was indeed a brown trout Thomas. The bass is a fine fish, but we don't have bass in Scotland it's too cold for them! 🙂

Thanks Chris. I like the slo-mo in the intro, I use it a lot. I just shoot these clips at 100 FPS then play them back at 25% speed to get the smooth motion. The opening shots were shot on my Nikon Z6 camera with a 14 - 35 lens. That fish knew where it wanted to go and was not easy to stop. Having it on a giant spring really helped in the confined space.

@@wildfisher Thanks Fred, I'll give it a try on the go pro and see what happens. Have you tried the leaders yet? East wind, bright sun and low rivers, this season is turning out to be just as challenging as last year! You watch it piss down through May!!

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I have tried the leader you sent me, sorry I forgot to mention it. Lovely presentation with it. We will need rain soon, the river is fine right now but once the farmers start irrigating that will all change.

It would be nice if the weather would just be average for a change, it seems to just lurch from one extreme to the other these days!

Sandy builds on a range of blanks, I might invest in a #3 wt next winter because I really do need another rod. 😆

Yes, sometimes use a Jingler, great early season dry fly! The weigh nets are handy, that one is a McLean, got it from Angling Active in Stirling. Not cheap, but high quality and accurate.

@@wildfisher nice one ill have a look at those nets, worth having a good one. Just popped out for an hr to my local river to a little bridge I know and tested a wee size 18 sedge, managed 2 lovely trout that were sitting in a bubble line, Not bad for a lunch break!!! 👌 Thanks again, as I say I learn so much from your vids! 👍

I do fish lower down now and then James but it can be hard going for an old man! Boulder Creek does not start with a "D", but I'm sure you'll get it when you have seen a few videos of it. 😄

Thanks for your comment. I replaced my first pair with another last week. They had developed a slight leak in the right leg. So that was one season. However, you have to bear in mind I fish a lot and I also used them when bank clearing this past winter, so I reckon they had 2 ½ to 3 seasons equivalent wear. The rivers I fish are a mass of brambles and thistles, hard on waders. I have had Orvis and Simms that have not lasted any longer, so at £70 these cheepos served me well.

I tie it in various colours but the main one is dead simple. Hook: 14 to 10 Thread; olive Body: pheasant tail ice dub Hackle : palmered red game Rib; tying tread just to make the fly more durable Wing: Pale elk of deer hair That’s it!

Hi Patrick, I'm no expert on drones, but I have a DJI Mavic Air 2. It has collision avoidance detectors and various tracking modes - I can set it to follow me for example. Some of the simpler drones don't have this - the first one I had didn't and it ended up in the river! One thing to remember is all drones (except toys) have to be registered with the CAA (about £10 / year) and if the drone is 250G or heavier you have to pass an online test (which is not hard). Take a look at this register-drones.caa.co.uk/ Hope that is of some help.

It's all down to personal preferences. Generally I find I get more control with longer rods.

I have noticed that. Getting glass rods is not easy these days and can't say I have seen a 4 wt longer than 8 feet.

@@wildfisher I wonder if glass' lack of backbone would make a longer rod unusable?

@@brendannolan2508 Could be - foot for foot glass is also heavier. Glass is also slower although these modern s-glass rods are a different animal from the old 1960s and 70s rods.
