Down By The Old Mill Stream: Scottish Small Stream Fly Fishing 

Good to see you and the sun both out on the same day. Makes a welcome change. I was out yesterday and had an absolute stinker of a day, the kind that makes you want to give up fishing for good. I will, of course, be back out tomorrow.

There are no bad days on the water, my friend. It is indeed, a good day to be alive.

How come the cows have access to the river banks? This seems very poor environmental practice. Here in NZ, we make steady progress in excluding stock from waterways. What is the first thing a cow does when it stands in water? Yes, it craps. And the sediment from the banks being trampled results in topsoil loss and river turbidity increasing and raised phosphate levels.

Catching a cow on the backcast!? I hope you have got a big enough net!

What weight fly rod are you using there? Out here in Colorado on streams that size I’m using a 3 weight. Tight lines
