"Dear Pastor Bob: I've had a real hard time accepting is this whole idea of 'Christian Death Metal.' To me it seems like nonsense. Before I came to the Lord, I was really into Deicide, Dissection, Mayhem, etc. As you and I know, the music is incidental to the spiritual message. So could you give me some pointers? Maybe if I understood the genre then I'd be able to accept the music and 'be blessed' by it?" That's the message today in this edition of Pastor Bob DAILY!

“Christian Death metal” I’m confused yet intrigued Also wouldn’t metal from the game DOOM be Christian metal considering that the game is about, among other things, killing the spawn of Satan? Pretty Christian thing to do if you ask me

I think Psalms 150 says it all and acts as a Biblical reference. Here's the King James Version: Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord. Did anybody catch that? "praise him with stringed instruments", "Praise him upon the loud cymbals", and "praise him upon the high sounding cymbals" If we call if 'Christian Heavy Praising Music', would CDM still get the same hatred? I'm not so sure, but, one thing I do know is that Psalms 150 allows the praising of the LORD with musical instruments.

+Eetu Hiltunen In the hands of a cook, meat is turned into a delicious meal. In the hands of a pilot, a plane is flyed safely. You cannot make a chef become a pilot UNLESS he knows how to pilot one. Same goes for the pilot and cooking/baking or whatever This can also be applied to metal. If metal makes you rebelious, crazy and mad then you best avoid it. But, some of us can actually control ourselves. I mean alot of us eat pork even though the old testaments stated not to.. It's all in the faith my friend. As I said before, it depends on who's hands things are given. For each and every person uses something in a different way.. God Bless you and may Christ be with you!

Thanks for asking! Actually, I have seen MANY people in worship at Death Metal Concerts. But honestly, there are two kinds of music. Worship and Celebration. I don't think Death Metal is for the purpose of worship. I don't think Country is either. Worship is where we all (no matter what style you like) come together and worship our Lord. But celebration can be any kind of music - and is for the purpose of speaking about our faith and the Christian Life!

"Don't criticize someone else's music just because you don't like it." Well said. It's the message that makes it Christian, not the label you put on it. God uses all musical styles to reach people. It bothers me when people called Christian metal an oxy-moron. They just have this out-dated stereotypical image of what Christian music should be: namely, hymns. Hymns are fine, but it casts a very small net. A few years ago I went to a concert. Sleeping Giant opened for Demon Hunter, and I will never forget how powerful SG was on stage, not just musically, but spiritually. I truly felt the Holy Spirit move through me in the mosh pit, as crazy as that sounds. My body was bouncing and my hands were lifted high, and I sang out "O, praise Him!" as tears ran down my face. I wish church was like that; I would go every single day.

You should not identify a genre of music as being Anti-Christian. THAT is the work of the Devil. You must not let Evil stop you from spreading the word of God through the vessels that can truly reach different kinds of people. Don't let them take hold of any creation. Take it in the name of God and use it as a vessel for Jesus Christ to reach those who most need it. God bless you all.

Demon hunter, to speak of wolves, becoming the archytype, (metal) for today, war of ages, sleeping giant ..... These guys speak scripturaly and preach on stage about The Lord and not just at a christan festival. They are willing to take a front hand stand in this war to open some hearts to The Lord. If you don't like it the genre, that is fine. But, have respect for your brothers and sisters who are willing to take a stand in this form.

VOMITORIAL CORPULENCE(if you're into a combo between Mortician meets early Carcass) look up their albums "skinstripper" and "karionic hacktician" . Look em up. Christian gore/horror death/grindcore. One of, if not the most extreme Christian DEATH metal(along with EMPTY GRAVE- noisecore/grindcore/death/, heir album "inside the man is a hole which has the shape of God"- ). And INVERSION - album "the nature of depravity". Obliteration, oblation, disecumbrance, GROMS, early "mortification", Metanoia, living sacrifice(2nd and 3rd albums), ENCRYPTOR(whose sole member also has an unblack metal band "SORROWSTORM"), Paramaicium(death-doom metal, featuring Jason from Mortification and unblack one man band HORDE) , A hill to die upon(blackened death metal, ala Behemoth and Gorgoroth sound). Vengeance Rising, Lament, Corpse, thrash-death AETURNUS album " from blackest darkness", deuteronomium(death n roll), and my personal favorite Christian death metal band CRIMSON THORN.

I think of this Scripture when I think of the term "Christian Death Metal"... Jude 1:22-23 "And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh." My path to salvation started with Metallica's song "Nothing Else Matters", and only Jesus matters. I used to be in a Thrash Metal band called "Morality". I was not born-again back then. I know the distinction. I was steeped in a sinful lifestyle. I can still listen to the style of music without falling into the pit. I now have a Doctor of Divinity and many years of a hard journey with Jesus. No one should judge the cross Jesus gave me to bear, but they do. Lol How about the story of King David, the apple of GOD's eye, in 2 Samuel 6? The point of these Scriptures is that not everyone will understand how we pour out our hearts and worship GOD. David's wife, Michal, never had children with David because of the argument they had when David danced in front of the maidens, looking foolish to Michal, and worshipped GOD with all his heart before the ark. 2 Samuel 6:5 "Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals." 2 Samuel 6:14-15 "Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet." 2 Samuel 6:16 "Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart." 2 Samuel 6:20 "Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”" 2 Samuel 6:21-23 "So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.” Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death." We're not all on the same path to salvation, but we are all different parts of the same body of Christ. We should not offend, but do everything in love as Jesus commanded. Many will not understand, as many did not understand Jesus or His disciples. Blessings! 🙏🙏🙏📖📖📖😇😇😇💚💙

Actually death metal is a perfect style as for scripture dealing with judgment. Like even from a secular band like Cannibal Corpse has a song called Devoured By Vermin which goes perfect for what the bible tells about the Supper of God where the wicked kings will be devoured by the beast of the field. And then there is dying to the flesh. Even classic Petra had a song called Killing My Old Man. But yeah I get that it is not for everyone or every occasion. I used to be in death metal all the way but now my tastes have broaden a lot since then.

I'm shocked to see how many ignorant Christians on this video. I'm a Christian and I've listened to metal for 2 decades. Only petty people get hung up on nonsense genre names instead of the SPIRIT OF THE MUSIC. Prove that bands like For Today, Becoming the Archetype, Memphis May Fire, August Burns Red, etc are "evil." The burden of proof is on you.
@ghostgate82
@ghostgate82 9 лет назад
***** TL;DR A genre name doesn't determine the concept a band is expressing in its lyrics. Death metal is simply one sub genre of metal. There are Christian bands in practically every metal sub genre. Literally the ONLY thing that matters is the intent a band has behind the message of their lyrics. their sound is something COMPLETELY subjective. it's not up to you to determine what "sounds worldly." God made the entire electro-magnetic spectrum, and He made every note and sound, so if someone wants to use a particular pattern of those sounds, who are you to determine whether they're "good" or "bad?" I think you've been brainwashed.
@ghostgate82

***** Please explain how I "dance with Satan", oh ignorant judgmental "Christian." I'm sure your answer is going to be hilarious.

***** TL;DR Yeshua hung out with plenty of sinners. We are ALL sinners, and no sin trumps the others (except blaspheming the Holy Spirit.....which is something I'd never do). You still haven't specifically said what I'm doing to denounce Christ and/or praise Satan. I help kids with troubled lives for a living, winning many to the Truth of Christ. I think you're confusing comedy with "evil." People like you are overly sensitive and have sheltered minds. If you're going to reply, be specific in telling me HOW I'm praising Satan. Use Bible verses too, not just your *feelings*.

As Christians we should call it Life Metal. I was actually thinking of starting a band with such a name. Life Metal could focus a lot on the wretchedness of the fallen world, as a reminder of the World to Come. (hence "Life Metal")

Hey! Jesus loves you! He died for your sins on the cross and rose again 3 days later! All you need to do to accept Gods gift is believe in him and what he did, And you need to repent(turn from sin and follow Jesus) and ask him for forgiveness in prayer. And remember that Jesus is God! He is three in one, the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit! Have a good day!:)

I've been listening to Demon hunter since i was 8, i've always loved the passion in their lyrics, so much more meaning to me then the mediocre praise music. Kutless, 12 stones, RED, Skillet, August Burns Red, War of Ages, Demon Hunter, Impending doom, Crimson Armada, Devil Wears Prada, and so many more. It's surprising how many of the most popular and listened to rock and metal bands are actually devout christians :D Blessthefall, as i lay dying, Memphis may fire, These are well known metal-core bands, and they're Christian. It's good to know the lords influencing the generations still.

I am former metal head, I gave my life back to God about 2 and a half years ago... I repented of my sins(turned from them), left them on the alter to die, Asked Jesus back into my heart, asked his forgiveness for me going astray, and he is faithful to forgive, PRAISE GOD. That being said, I have listened to quite a few songs from a handful of these "Christian Metal" bands.... Not once did I hear them mention the blood of Christ, His mercy, His grace for every need..... I did not hear of his love,,,, I heard them sing of how they have and will fail him.. which we all do that is why Paul says he dies daily (repents daily).....If you read down on some of their songs at the comments the language from the kids was horrible.. Makes you wander if they even knew it was Christian metal????? My question is do you feel the power of God in the songs,,, or the power of the drums, the screaming singer, the edgy side of the music???? Is God really in it?? I did enjoy listening to the Metal..., but I am afraid it wasn't Christian music.. at least not to me :( .King James Version.... Colossians 3;14..And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness, (charity is love) 15.. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16... Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.. 1 Thessalonians 5;21...Prove all things; hold fast that which is good..22..Abstain from all appearance of evil...(Abstain, to avoid or refrain from).......... 23.. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.. again I enjoyed listening to the Metal but it did not make my heart rejoice in the Lord,,, It did make me wanna bang my head LOL.. God bless you all... , but don't write off the old gospel... There is still allot of power in the old gospel.... there is nothing like Amazing Grace :) The Old rugged cross.. and its still the blood that saves from sins One last question.... What is an appearance of evil to you???????? again God bless you all good night.......dig in the word of God study, seek the will of God.. I didn't post this to discourage or try to make anyone mad.. I just felt compelled to by the Holy Spirit..

Out of nothing a new creation! Out of nothing into new LIFE! OH! Out of nothing a new creation! Out of nothing into NEW LIFE! Becoming the Archetype's "Ex Nihilo"...If those aren't "worship" lyrics I don't know what is. There are plenty of people saying they are christian doing more harm then good, these guys actually live the life. Which is the best example of all. Especially to the secular crowd. This song puts chills down my back when I hear them singing it and ministers to me greatly. Try to be a little more open minded and you'll see God in many more places than you would think.

I don't care for Death Metal as a sound. I never could embrace the tuned down sounds and growling. At the same time if the message is Godly more power to them. Just as much as I can like Christian power Metal who am i to tell someone not to like Christian Death Metal, just because it sounds scarier?

I completely understand your question. It's something I've pondered as well. You have to understand, this is not music intended to be played in churches. It is played out in the marketplace. However, some churches do use heavy metal worship, but that's not for the "gray haired ladies", it's for those who are in that culture. If you're going to reach someone who speaks German you have to speak German. This type of music is to reach out to the lost sheep who speak this "language". It is to give an alternative to the Evil music, and to give those who worship Jesus a refuge and can use this music as a strength to combat the constant bombardment upon their mind and soul. Instead of Evil junk, we can use what the Devil intended for Evil and use it for Good. This type of music is part of our culture. Some would say it's not in the Scriptures, but, what music is in the Scriptures? There are some cultures that do not have any music in their culture, such as the Vikings who felt that music is a way to vex the soul, to put a witchcraft spell on people. No music? No wonder they were angry!! :) There are many who run from God who take refuge in Evil metal. However, God sends His evangelists to them, speaking their language and invading their space. God loves them SO MUCH that He sends His ambassadors into the "foreign lands". This would fall under the Scriptures of people prohibiting others from doing that which they would not do; "do not touch, do not taste, do not handle...". It is not a matter of Scriptural prohibition, it is a matter of preference and style. Which Scriptures authorized Jazz music? Or Country and Western? What if those styles actually make God want to puke? They don't. Maybe God likes the stuff. After all, Jesus was a long haired hippy and King David was a rock star with a 10-stringed guitar.

I am Orthodox Lutheran (LCMS). I can't get enough of traditional hymns, chants, and liturgy. i love going to sleep listening to LRN. and yet, I love solid Christian rap (LeCrae, Trip Lee, Shai Linne, etc.), and metal (Becoming the Archetype, For Today, Ark of the Covenant, etc.). Pietism and legalism have really twisted what is acceptable. But more and more, oldschool Christians are accepting the fact that the Bible doesn't forbid any kind of artwork, whether audial, visual, etc. Don't go by feelings. Not everyone "feels" the same. Some art forms may rub you the wrong way, subjectively. that just means its not your thing.

What with all the evil filth in the lyrics of so many secular extreme metal bands it's so important to offer listeners of These Genres of Music a positive alternative...not only "positive" but the message of eternal life itself and how to be fruitful to the Lord on earth....for their own good and that of those around them.Thank God for raising up so many sincere musicians in all Genres of rock and metal(and ALL Music too)....1st Cor 9;22 We Need to reach out to Folks where theyre at in a way they relate to and recognise we have empathy with them.Music in any form is neutral.The question is,how do we use it,for what Ends,to glorify whom?Even if some cannot or will not understand how God uses Christian extreme metal they should still rejoice that the Gospel message is getting out there....Phil 1;18(as the very uncompromising Paul wrote).As my good friend in Demoniciduth called one of his recent Songs.CHRISTIAN METAL WORLDWIDE.Be blessed.

I know this video is old, but my top 2 bands would be Becoming The Archetype (who just made a comeback which is awesome) and Hope For The Dying. I’ve seen a lot of suggestions of other bands I like in the comments already, but I hadn’t really seen anyone mention them yet. Of course, HFTD was pretty new at the time this video was made.

In the New Testament, Paul said "For although I am free in every way from anyone’s control, I have made myself a bond servant to everyone, so that I might gain the more [for Christ]. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to men under the Law, [I became] as one under the Law, though not myself being under the Law, that I might win those under the Law. 21 To those without (outside) law I became as one without law, not that I am without the law of God and lawless toward Him, but that I am [especially keeping] within and committed to the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law. 22 To the weak (wanting in discernment) I have become weak (wanting in discernment) that I might win the weak and overscrupulous. I have [in short] become all things to all men, that I might by all means (at all costs and in any and every way) save some [by winning them to faith in Jesus Christ]. 23 And I do this for the sake of the good news (the Gospel), in order that I may become a participator in it and share in its [blessings along with you]." 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 (AMP) That, to me, explains why it's so important to continue the ministry that those genres of music cater in. You've got to reach those people some how. It's one of the ways God reached me. Praise God and thank you for what you're doing! -Joe

"It broke god's heart"... then why'd he do it? if he is all powerful he can not do that and still not broke free-will or whatever you will. Every single thing that occurs is god's choice due to his omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. He can stop or do anything he choses. Following, why would god decide (yes, decide) to have himself brutally tortured and killed for the sins of his creation. Bear in mind, he already knew that this would occur since the beginning of time. Furthermore, why kill himself? He was already in a position to just forgive and still not "interfere" with free will (He's god). Besides, on the concept of Satan, let's just do pure numbers here. You can conservatively estimate that god killed 2,000,000 (not including the flood and all deaths which have non-precise numbers- which makes this ratio even wider) in the bible. This is compared to Satan's.... 10.. That is .000005 satan/god murder. Meanwhile, the killing of Job's servants was actually due to a bet god had made with satan. That's like a german saying that Hitler is the hero and someone like mother Teresa was evil. Also, your anecdotal evidence at the end is pointless and serves no place in a discussion. It is pervasion of the evidence as it not testable nor verifiable that you were told this.
@adjmonkey
@adjmonkey 9 лет назад
***** that is the most contradictory thing I've ever read, God knows all but does't know of evil? He's either known of it because he transcends time and is omniscient or didn't because he's not. No- that's not a good thing at all. Assuming he is perfect, that leads to moral ambiguity and needless confusion. It does more harm than good. My question is (this isn't intended to be taken rudely): Were you (upon conversion) 1) Suffering at the time 2) Living in a highly religious Area 3) Feeling some "mysterious" power
@adjmonkey
@adjmonkey 9 лет назад
***** okay thank you for the answering my questions. I'm sorry for the choices of your parents, but I would say that I don't think their lack of religious beliefs made them that way. There are plenty of good non-religious people; as I'm sure you're aware. loving people, as well, as I perhaps vainly include myself xD. And I'm sorry but I won't make myself susceptible to something and then believe and base my entire life around little evidence. And No, I had no intentions of annoying or agitating anyone. The initial reply was yours. I just said I was glad that he was open-minded unlike many Christians- which is the truth. I have prayed, have listened to and still do listen to Christian rock, read the bible, and was raised Christian.

God Bless you brother Bob. You explain this topic so patiently and kindly. Thank you. I think the misunderstanding people have with Christian Death Metal is putting the word Christian together with the words Death Metal because it sounds kind of sinister as it rolls off the tongue. The simplest explanation I can give is that the genre is named after the band Death, and has forever been deemed as Death Metal. The music itself doesn't necessarily have to contain any subject matter about death or dying at all, but let's face it.....the greatest thing God has ever done for us is to have his only begotten son die on the cross for our sins. So I might expect Christian Death Metal to contain some subject matter about death. Just my two cents...Great video sir!

I think you guys just cant stand the fact that many youngsters enjoy the real and true metal music, with its real meaning, brutal and even evilish, and try to get those kids (bring them) to your church. Metal is art. Art has no limit. I thonk it is real hypocrit to reject or to avoid bands like Deicide, Venon or Black Sabbath, because of their lyrical content. In addition, enjoying aggressive bands as such with its Chritian content. That's ridiculous. Enjoy music.

Pastor Bob, what do you think of the music being promoted on the Nordic Mission website? Especially, the black metal and death metal. I look at album covers for these bands, they are very dark in nature, similar to the non-christian bands, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Naglfar, etc...
@alexprivette4409
@alexprivette4409 10 лет назад
It's not the "type" of music that it is, most people dont understand that. Like Pastor Bob states in this video "it has to do with what we enjoy, what clicks with us." The religion does not define the music, out of the collection genres of music that there are - death metal is a STYLE of music. Just because that there is screaming and growling and grunge, does'nt state that it relates to the devil himself. May God and all his glory watch down on us and protect us. If a person/persons like this music; its their personal likes and if hey are Christian, GREAT - it allows to open new doors in the world of music and allows other people whom like death metal and are religious to enjoy their music without the need for sin.

Love rock and metal unfortunately there are some bands that speak in their lyrics strongly bashing about God and Jesus. I don't focus on the lyrics that much because i enjoy the sounds of music. I just pray that God will help them see the truth and change for the better. Nothing will take me away from loving God. There are great Christian death metal band's their lyrics and sounds are incredible. For today, impending doom, theocracy, demon hunter, war of ages and more.

I grew up with christian metal. My very first christian album was a Stryper single with reason for the season and winter wonderland. My first Christian "heavy" album was Vengeance Human Sacrifice. Then "The Lead" One bad pig, modern mission, crucified, Saint, Daniel Band, Rez and a few other albums were given to me by Big Jon Sproule of Whitecross at a youth group meeting at church and that changed my life. Thank you Jon! And thank you Bob for staying true all these years for Christian metal.

god blessed you with long beautiful locks. back to the topic, i believe the theme is secondary to the genre - if we interchanged the lyrics to neutral, fans of both would enjoy the same music without bias. my only issue has been the concept itself - the sound suggests brutality and defiance, yet a significant christian theme is about submission in order to live - almost a contradiction to the art itself. such contradictions are commonly a formula to comedy, perhaps why many laugh at the very thought. the original sound and theme of gangsta rap seemed to compliment each other - promoting rebellion, violence, hatred (granted much of it shock value). i remember noticing rap group Bone Thugs having a christian theme, but the music was lighter, positive, and complimented the theme, and while consistent with gangsta environment, they were wanting to escape it and find peace with god. ("if u nigga wanna run up on a Bone... gonna pull out my chrome, but i don't wanna send a nigga home... please take me home [heaven]"). thus it felt appropriate, not a comical contradiction. i'm sure you remember Stryper when they said to hell with god and hello to cocaine and fornication. i was a fan of their music regardless of their theme. but they are human, clearly their theme and personal lives were not in harmony, and though i always question one's christian motivation, this really came into question as a performance rather than sincerity. the band Morbid Angel has a song "God Of Emptiness" - the verse is superb: the lyrics and music are perfect for each other. the singer assumes the role of satan speaking to god directly, accusing him of being unfair and jealous, and that almost all humans love him more than god, thus his efforts are pretty much a lost cause, and he is an angry stubborn loser (of course put more eloquently). it feels sincere, and besides presenting some pretty damn good points, there aren't any laughable contradictions - the art of words and the art of music seem to be in harmony. and though i cannot scientifically articulate how music or a sound represent a specific mood or theme, i certainly feel it, and i think we all can to a degree. forgive the long rant.

I think that with rock, in general, it gets persecuted by some Christians, not only because of the origin of the name that got attached, (rock & roll,) but also because of hate and preconceptions that any Christian version of such cannot and must not exist... Especially if it sounds darker. When the same people attack other genres too, such as country, I think they also ignore the roots if southern gospel... Then again some are hating gospel in general for being too secular in their eyes. (It doesn't help that recording labels seem to money hungry and too well versed in the practice that wants to own all music and it's distribution.)

Christianity is all about death. Dying to oneself, the resurrection of the death of Jesus, to loose your life is to gain life. I mean, Christians drink the "blood" and eat the "body" of Christ every Sunday. Death is life to Christians. "Memento Mori" is an ancient Christian Latin saying of meditation meaning "Remember to Die"
