John and wife Sandy give a presentation here on the rich man and Lazarus. found in Luke 16:19-31. Does this passage prove that people who die as unbelievers will suffer forever? Is that really the point of this passage?
John Hopler came to Christ in 1973 while attending law school at Ohio State University. He later went into full time ministry as a missionary, supporting church planters from his home church (about 50 US churches and 300 churches overseas). John and his wife, Sandy, live in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Good presentation, John and Sandy. I especially loved the insights about "purple and fine linen" and the five sons. These insights bring the parable back home to its original context. The people who were listening would have picked up on these things. Good teaching like this helps wipe off the layers that have covered the original "painting" that Jesus made for us. In my presentation on Stories of the Master, I taught that the fires of judgment in the parable were pointing to the fires of the AD 70 judgment when Rome destroyed Jerusalem. Thanks again! Kathy and I enjoyed it.

I take it literally (not a parable), but agree it says nothing of the duration of torments and there is no grounds to discredit that judgment is remedial. Abraham says, "son, remember" which seems to support God's unending desire for the lost to convert to the truth, to not forget Moses and all the Prophets, and to worship Jesus.
