I'd be very disappointed if you sold your collection for a Daytona, no matter how nice the watch is. Your taste is so much better than a Daytona one-watch-collection.

Promoting fakes for fragrance bottles that average £50-£250 and last years vs hating fake watches that cost £10,000.00+ is some impressive mental gymnastics. Art is art and promoting fakes is a disservice to the craftsmen & women who put in painstaking hours to create something unique.

Christian is probably right, the green beach Daytona will probably be worth more in the future. But there are so many different places you can park your money into. And as a watch dealer, he probably feels he should only buy if he gets a “steal.”

One of my favorite quotes applies to this hobby so much, “Appreciation is more important than possession”. You can enjoy things from afar just as much as owning them.

Really appreciate the wisdom in regards to the financial side of collecting, when the vast majority of content is focused around consumption and new releases. I’m in a much lower income bracket as far as collectors go, with my most expensive piece being a Longines calendar chrono. However the logic still carries over whether we’re talking about $100 watches or $10,000. I now have 26 watches in my collection, and often wonder if it’s too many. It’s easy to get caught up in the “I like this, so I’m going to buy it” logic, and the statement about killing your passion with over indulgence rings loud, and I hope more people listen because it’s very true and more common than people realize. Might need to start paying more attention to my rotation and start selling some off that I no longer love. Not only for my own peace of mind and reduction of clutter, but also for the reason that someone else out there will wear and appreciate it more than I do.

Yeah but the platinum Day-Date doesnt look like dogshit. The Beach Daytonas are just hyped up and are the next "current thing" in the watch world because there is a demand for it and not enough supply. And everybody wants to be in on thext thing early, so the community just picks the next set of watches that have been "sleeping". The Day-Date in contrast will always be in style to some degree at least and that is consistency and enduring art. Miss me with that Beach Daytona.

Christian, most museums DON'T actually own all you get to see in exhibitions! Most of the art pieces are really on loan from private collectors from around the world, FYI.

being born and raised in Daytona Beach, FL I've always wanted a daytona - since I was a kid, before they were market crazy -. Not sure I'll ever shell out the cash to buy one but it would be really cool to own any model, to pass down for generations since my entire family history is in Daytona Beach.

My Rolex AD called me today on a new yellow gold day-date on president. I thought about selling my collection to buy it, then I was like “silly guy, you don’t need to do that. just rain cash on the AD and let them clean it up while sipping champagne.” So I’m jumping in my vintage Porsche in the morning to get it. Just say it won't increase in value, but at least it will keep its value. Then you did not spend that money. You put that away into a form that actually preserves its value relatively well, yet you can still enjoy it, and if you need to liquidate it, you can. I'd say if you can buy a watch for 60K, but it's a lot of money to you, then either invest it into something else, or buy that watch. What you cannot afford really is to NOT TO INVEST that money, just "live it up". If you just spend it on vacation, or nice dinners or things like that, well first of all that's also super important, you put that money into experiences which is ultimately the whole point of life. But you probably won't use 60K for vacation. It is definitely a good argument, and one that is worth considering :D I'd say go for the watch, but not right now, the market is still going DOWN. Not a freefall anymore, but steadily going down still. Buy that Daytona in a year.

Ok, first I agree that the Daytona does nothing for me. I much prefer an Omega Speedy or a Tag Heuer Carrera, or even a Hanhart. Second, like these even less. They’re like bad versions of the MoonSwatch (I’m exaggerating a little, but you know what I mean). But that’s the beauty of watch collecting, to each their own.

I think the Daytona is butt ugly but if I had to chose one of those 4 I'd probably go with the pink and throw that strap in the garbage first thing. There are so many cooler watches for cheaper out there.
