Geez its almost like the christians took older Roman and Germanic holidays,and in the case of the eastern orthodox church,slavic holidays,mixed them with their own theology and made christmas

The type of Christian that thinks Halloween is bad for being pagan tends to think the same thing about elves and Santa. Worse, even, because Santa & co are trying to distract from Jesus and derail the modern Christian's biggest holiday, while Halloween is just...there. I remember "Santa Day" being used to dismiss people that celebrated all the non-Christian aspects of the holiday.

All the Holidays are a mixture of yes old Pagan beliefs and Christian beliefs as well as cultures and tribal customs of our people's when they converted to Christianity. For instance Easter eggs come from old Anglo Saxon culture because eggs were a symbol of the God Estra a Anglo Saxon fertility goddess these symbols do not exist in non Anglo Cultures for instance in Hispanic cultures Easter is called Pasquale or Passover in English and it's more like our Thanksgiving and there are no colorful eggs. Halloween actually gets most of its traditions from the time when the Puritans ruled England and banned all holidays as pagan. Common people would dress up in disguises and go to rich peoples houses and demand a trick or a treat, basically telling the Lord to open his wine cellar or he'd get a brick through his window hence trick or treat and best of all no one could be arrested by the Puritans as everyone was wearing a disguise which became costumes. Alot of the pagan influences in Christmas have to do with the worship of Freya who the Germans loved so much due to her rowdy wild parties every year that many German communitys only finally converted because the Church agreed to turn a blind eye to the celebrations which they viewed as pagan but hey it got people in the church on Sunday so why not ignore this one holiday tradition.

Tbh and in all fairness.. when I was heavy rooted in the Christian faith I found my self...invested in thinking spirits and demons are real and a priest is the only one that could get them out of the human body or house...but yet if I reflect on the time when I was doing wiccan it too had spells and candles...j.s...imo they align with each other in more then one way...

They didn't specify how their grandmother cast spells, for all you know they were prayers to saints with a few passages of appropriate scripture peppered in, it would still look like witchcraft to an outside observer. While perusing Twitter the other day, I came across a Catholic talking shit about pagan gods, how they’re demons and we need to stop worshiping them, etc. So just out of curiosity, I snooped on her profile. Full-on altar to the Virgin Mary, complete with a large idol, candles, rosary, incense, herbs, flowers, etc. I lost it lol. Catholics are pagan af.

To be fair, witchcraft in Christianity is seen as seeking power from anything other than that that comes from God. Any other gods or spirits are considered Evil in Christianity and therefore must be wiped out. Deus vult style.

I mean with the whole saint oils and asking for help on behalf of God stuff it isn't that far fetched. A lot of the older churches have very similar magical practices to pagans, they simply give different reasons and rationalizations of why they work and how.

There was a study done I’m not sure win but it found that people living in the area during the Salem witch trials and people who had died because of the trials their autopsies came back with trace amounts of psychoactive material. And during the Salem witch trials there was a fungal problem with the wheat production meaning the bread was tainted so hallucination was a big deal. But yes I find it hypocritical that the people from the Salem witch trials when kill supposed witches or witchcraft and then turn around and celebrate Halloween Easter and many other events and traditions

I think the salem witch trials haf more to do with the whole town being high on mushrooms. Also, most of the time as far as i know witches aren't viewed favorably in any religion. The difference seems to me that a christian believed God would protect them from magic without any technical know how.

@@maybelater6282 I started many years ago with Bryan F. LeBeau's history of the Salem witch trials. In it, he briefly discusses practices considered "natural" such as astrology, charms, etc. that were differentiated from a compact with the devil. His bibliography in that book is a good place to start. Good histories on Christian mysticism and histories of early Christian blendings with pagan practices, and the Jewish and Christian extra-biblical works that became "magic" works or Grimoires are good launching places as well, since well-edited editions give bibliographies for further study.

If they read the Bible at all they would know to stay far far away from this. God makes it clear that divination and witchcraft are not for us. I come from a Christian background, but almost 30 years ago, I was ordained a priest of the Reformed Old Catholic faith and I have experienced the Mystery and Magic of the Divine Liturgy. I assure you it is quite real and there is nothing like it.

As I was elevating the Chalice and Paten after the Consecration, I felt a tingling which progressed through my fingers, up my arms, into my body, where it entered my heart, ending in an incredible burst of pure joy, yet awe. It was then I realised that for us, Liturgy is the ultimate act of theurgy, a form of high magick. This is the best that I can describe this. It made me realise what an incredible gift it is to be able to literally bring Heaven to earth by consecrating bread and wine, transmuting it into the Body and Blood of Christ.

That was originally in the Greek or Aramaic (I forget which they translated it out of) a reference to the people who fouled or poisoned wells, since they caused so much more wide-spread suffering than even a regular old murderer. (Livestock, etc.) "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live." One of the best things that ever happened for my Paganism was borrowing a scholarly translation of a bible that had the Greek, Aramaic, and English side by side in columns. Took me all of Easter break (there's an irony for you) for me to read it and realize, yeah nah, xtianity American Style is bullshit.

Because I do fume about "white witches" when it comes to the whole idea of "cast off all your negative emotions and only practice that which is a blessing". Not because they exist, but because they generally seem to think they can influence the lives of others without permission if they only focus on the "good". I usually get ostracised by both Christians and Heathens when I say that but really it just means that I try not to be a dick about religion. For reasons that are my own I converted to Catholicism in my early 20s. However I find it arrogant to believe that the prime deity of my own belief is the only "true God". The way I see it is that if I believe that my god exists then surely those of other faith are just as likely to. I do see Satan as a deity as I do the deities of the ancient beliefs. I have a great love for Buddhist and various "Heathen" beliefs. I'm as likely to wear a Crucifix as I am to wear my Mjolnir or Ankh. I'm as likely to attend mass as I am to attend a blòt. I view all (most but I'm not going to get into cults now) faiths as equal and I see merit in practices of faiths other than my own.

I'm a Christian, and i believe the reason the bible warns against it is because we aren't ready for the spiritual world yet. But that's based on most old testament law being about keeping people from getting sick, killing each other, and making sure no one worked like a slave.

You really need to stop assuming that Christian means American Protestant. The BULK of European magic and witchcraft uses Christian symbolism and is based in that world view. They Know what witchcraft is and isn’t. Frankly the contemporary pagan community has a harder time with defining witchcraft and theology than Christians do.

I've never heard of spells like that in folk lore. Healing is usually specific feats like curing blindness, a fire ball is a simple circus trick, and i think there should probably be a spell to wish lightning on someone.

It wasn't to protect from plagues and it didn't happen more than once (if you go by the story). The blood was spread on the door posts to protect the first born inside that building, from the angel of death who was going to be passing over that night. It only happened one time and is remembered every year as passover.

The buttercross may have been where Crossbuns came from. As in the Mother Goose nursery rhyme "Hot Cross Buns." The mother would do the daily grind, bake enough bread to feed the family, then make buns with the rest to sell at the Buttercross. There's no reason to mark them with a Phillips head for baking, of course they didn't have sugar drizzled all over them back in the dark ages, because if they even had sugar, they didn't sell it for a penny, or 2.
